The Shadows of Ecstasy: Many Partings (Thread complete.)
      #467069 - Thu Mar 18 2004 05:04 PM

It is night in the Dream. A pale waxing moon hovers crisply in a cold, deep violet evening sky pin-pricked with stars.
In an uninhabited prairie, from the shadow of a twisted, knotted old willow tree, slid a tall black form. It was the shadow-beast, Dark, come out this evening to hunt for some food, as he always did.

Dark had been in the Dream for some time now. He could remember back, a long time ago, when a brave kitsune woman of the Dream opened the jar he was sealed in, freeing him into the realm of the Napping Cat. Ever since that night, Dark had had many experiences, and met many avatars. He did not know exactly where he was going in his life now... But he did know that he had made friends here, and he felt that he belonged to the Dream.

He thought to himself, as his breath came out in wispy clouded puffs in the crisp air. 'It is a good feeling... To belong to a place. Is the Dream where I belong, from now on? Perhaps I shall never leave here?'

Dark sat down with his back to the willow tree, and held his head.

'But there are times when I feel that I recall something unpleasant. I can not recall well who I was... or what I did, prior to coming here. As of late... my nightmares have been tinged with crimson edges. I feel as if something ominous from my past is going to come back to me, and that even here, in the Dream, I must face it.'

'But I've tried to bury my past. I will not allow myself to become weak and tormented by what I do not know. I will not worry about it, and continue to live here. The Dream is pleasant. This is my home now. This is where I belong.' Dark sniffed the pleasant night air, looking around idly at the softly waving grasses.

Then, he detected an ominous cold scent that he should not have smelled. Dark jumped up quickly, his claws extended out, like a startled animal. The scent was cold as frost, and yet strangely familiar...

Coming at him from dark shadows in the grass, came forth a massive creature. Its obsidian body was built like a draft horse, but with the sleekness of a cat, and it had heavy claws. At the end of its tail, a magnesium white light glowed, casting a white spotlight before it. Dark stared at the emerging Beast.

"You... you are a jinbu!" Dark stuttered in shock. He had not seen another of his kind since coming to the Dream. Normally, he would be elated to see one of his own kind. However, in the deep black eyes of his Brother-Beast, there was an unsettling, glazed over cyan light, as if it were not truly seeing. The creature had its eyes trained on Dark, its eyes like those of a hunter. Dark started to fall back as the creature approached.

Then, it spoke to Dark in a stern, droning tone. "You, shadow-beast Dark. I am shadow-beast Stygia. The Emperor is Summoning you. I have been instructed to bring you to him." Stygia continued advancing on Dark.

"Brother Stygia, what is this?!" Dark stepped back, a little nervously. "Who is this Emperor? What does he want me for? I have no Master, and have no need of one. I have become independent."

"When you have answered his Summons, all will be revealed. You can not disobey the Master, Dark. Look inside yourself. In your heart, you know that you have felt the Summons. You should not be running wild in this wilderness. You will come back to the Master."

"I will not! He is controlling you!... This isn't right. You have to resist him!"

All of a sudden, Stygia waved the end of his tail in Dark's face, briefly blinding the light-sensitive Dark with the glowing magnesium-white tip of his tail. Dark closed his eyes and fell back. Stygia lunged forwards, and with a swipe of his heavy claws, Dark fell to the grass.

Stygia carefully lifted Dark's unconcious form by the shoulder with his jaws, dragging him a short distance away. There he carefully arranged Dark to lie on his broad horse-like back, and then he turned and disappeared into the shadows, and all was once again quiet.

~~~~~~~~~
Somewhere, in a far off place, a mind muses.
'The jinbu Dark, who for so long disappeared to this realm called the Dream and was lost, will soon be returned to his rightful place.'
On a polished table, there was an old scroll, with a list of names written in an archaic language. Several of them have ink check-marks written next to them. With a brush, a hand painted another check-mark next to another one of the names.
'Stygia has done well. He will be rewarded with extra feed today.'
Re: The Shadows of Ecstasy (Prologue/Sign-Ups) new
      #467070 - Thu Mar 18 2004 05:05 PM
Meanwhile, the following morning in the Dream.
It is a clear morning with a light blue sky. Two tall figures were approaching an outcropping of rock in the green hilly grass. Both were black-skinned and white-faced; one was skinny, and walked with a lively manner, and the other was heavy-set, and walked quietly behind his companion. He was carrying a cage, which was full of small shadowy little birds.
The two jinbu, Abyssi and Umbra, arrived at the appointed meeting place, Ascetic's Lookout, which was a tall piling of rock from which the surrounding countryside could be easily surveyed. Umbra set down the birdcage, and Abyssi, one by one, started to remove the birds and attached a message to their legs; then he let them fly free. The shadow-birds flew far and wide over the Dream, bearing Abyssi's message and plea for aid:
Greetings, avatar of the Dream. My name is shadow-beast Abyssi. My companion Umbra and I are requesting your assistance on a matter of some import. In brief summarization, we are going on a journey to liberate an oppressed people. One of these individuals, Dark, I have heard was an aquaintance of some of you, and I fear that he has fallen into grave circumstance.
If you would be interested in coming with us, please meet me at Ascetic's Lookout. We will talk of the details there.
Abyssi sat down on a pillar of rock as Umbra stood by. The two of them waited, scanning the horizon for any sign of Dream avatars, that might answer the message.
When the first avatars appear, Abyssi stands up and greets them in a clear voice: "Avatars of the Dream! I thank you all for coming out this way on such short notice. I trust you have read the message. As you know, Umbra and I are going to embark on a long quest. We need your help to accomplish our goals. The long and short of it is, my race is being Summoned under an old geas, or spell, against our will. Now... The way won't be an easy one, but for those interested in such things, I do promise compensation for your services, and three square meals a day. Please, before we talk further, won't you each tell me your names, and why you may be interested to come with us, or what kind of talents you may offer?"
Abyssi paused and waited for each avatar to respond, as Umbra stood quietly by.
ooc: I'm looking for players for a RP that I'm planning to be fairly character-interaction and story based. I would prefer players who believe that they will be available for a while to come and can post consistently. (It isn't required that your avatar has interacted with Dark.) If you are interested and have read the prologue, please sign up by posting your avatar's ic response to meeting Abyssi and his question to you. From your avatar's responses, I'll choose around 6 or so avatars that will be participating.
I am going to try updating about once a week or somewhat less frequently depending on my schedule. Thanks for your interest.
Thank you Denise
****************
A Random Clearing of Grasses - Forest Of Clearings
The susurus of gentle breezes through tall grasses sings of lazy afternoons.
The tawny yellow grasses shiver and shudder as something moving about within them is heard. Now and then a flash of color rises from the grasses. The pitter pat of small feet ceases during each flash of color.
I feel so very good. Racing and jumping about in the grasses which tower over my head may be simple play, but it is fun none the less.
The grasses may be far too short for others to lose themselves within their prairie expanse. But these pastures are plenty tall for my wee stature to find endless play.
Paths get trampled here and there within the grass.
Sometimes I leap fully clear of them, snapping my iridescent polychromatic wings open, only to glide along the seed casings that top the grassess, my fan of tail feathers flicking open and shut as I maneuver. Then I float once again into the yellow grassy depths.
After a time, I pause in my play to lay upon my back, wings eagle spread and allow the sun to warm my shiny turquoise blue belly scales.
"Sigh"
Life is good
As I drift in and out of light snoozing, a flitting of something about my head draws my attention.
Swirling eyes follow the movement of some shadowy bird, which hovers briefly, then lands lightly upon my long crocodilian snout. I go nearly crosseyed gazing at it.
It carries a note ! Hmmmmmmm ???
Someone only recently delivered into freedom, has been rendered into bondage again.
"Dark !"
****************
Ascetic's Lookout
I follow the shadow bird to the described location, and alight upon the top of the rocks next to Abyssi and Umbra who stands by.
I gaze at both for a few moments, blinking my swirling kaleidescopic eyes.
I listen to Abyssi's brief statement then am silent for a short interval.
Thinking.......
Not starving is of course a good thing. Money ...... I am not sure what one will do with that...... perhaps I am ignorant.
Finally I break the silence by warbling;
"Hi, I'm Yao Chi "
I gaze at Abyssi and his companion Umbra
"Nobody should be a slave...."
I wonder if a speech is called for, but know that I do not have such within me. I contemplate also, if being as gaudy, floofy, small and fragile as I am, if I am really going to be of much use......
"Youchy !, youchy !", he hollers out loud
Yao Chi’s fallen, from his cloud
Rourke cocks his head at the note and shrugs. He looks to his avian companion and points at the note.
Whaddya think Owen? Sound like an adventure to me... You know what adventure means! Treasure! Wanna go?
The gryphon squaks and nods it's head as if to say "yes" and the two fly off to find this "Ascetic's Lookout"
Ascetic's Lookout
Rourke bows once the two land adn he dismounts Owen. He hears the greeting and nods to Owen.
Whaddya say Owen? Three squares a day he says. Let's not forget about the adventure and possibility of treasure!
Owen Squaks again and bumps Rourke forward with his beak.
Okay Okay.. I get the message.. I'll introduce us..
He bows and tries his best to be charming.
My name is Rourke C. Bilby and this is Owen. You'll have to excuse me if I babble a bit.. I'm not used to being awake during the day like this.. I prefer to be out and about during the night. I'm mostly a jack of all trades.. I'm skilled enough to get by and am very good at the art of stelth and lock picking.
The bilby stands, quite proud of his traits though he really hasn't much to offer.
A forested hill somewhere in the Dream
Jack Manycoats stared at the wounded bird-creature. He wasn't sure what had attacked it. There were many dangers in the Dream, and he hadn't seen one tenth of one percent of them yet. Whatever it had been, it hadn't been fast enough to finish off the job. However, it was clear the bird wasn't going to be flying anywhere soon.
Delon climbed down from Jack's shoulder as quick as a wink and began padding towards the bird, stopping only when a massive hand plucked him from the ground.
"It's just a bird," Delon said. "And it's hurt!"
Jack felt a flash of irritation from the boy, and sent back caution. He moved up on the bird slowly, watching it carefully. He didn't like the look of its skeletal head. Things that lived without flesh were bad in his experience. The incorporeal feathers were another point against it. However, it made no aggressive moves. He touched it cautiously, and it trembled. It appeared that it was just what it promised to be, an injured bird.
Delon walked around Jack impetuously. "Look," he said, pointing. "It's got something tied to its leg."
Jack let Delon touch the bird and untie the message. The boy read it as Jack tried to assess the bird's injuries. It seemed mostly all right except for a cracked wing. Jack's brother had kept pigeons as a child, so he had some idea of what to do. He found some straight sticks, and made a splint with the help of some bandages from the pack. Delon finished reading and handed the message to Jack.
"Ascetic's Lookout! I know that place," Delon said. "We should help them." He sent feelings of need and urgency to Jack.
Jack sent back feelings of caution and irritation. This wasn't their problem. Why should they take the risk for someone who may not be telling the truth. What if it was a trap for altruists?
"It's the right thing to do. Come on, we've gotta help them!" Delon said, redoubling his efforts.
Jack sighed, and gave in. In truth, he'd feel bad if they didn't go and help them. Not that he'd let Delon know that.
As he picked Delon up, the raccoon child pointed at the bird. "What about him? We can't leave him here!"
With an inaudible sigh, Jack picked up the bird gingerly, and let it roost on his other shoulder. He hoped it wouldn't defecate too often.
Ascetic's Lookout
As Jack and Delon walked up, they were fascinated by the two waiting for them. They were, Jack thought, the same sort of creature. Very different, but with some similar qualities, especially their skin. Very interesting. At the thin one's words, he sent a flash of avarice at Delon.
"Excuse me, sir," Delon said. "We'll do it, but Jack wants to know what compensation you're talking about."
Jack sent irritation to the young raccoon boy. Why did he tell them that? He should have learned more details before accepting the job.
As is often the case of a midmorning, Kai is sitting in lotus position on a lone rock in the middle of one of his Springs, meditating in the silence when the birdlike shadowbeast arrives. It settles onto his shoulder and chirps for his attention. At length he opens his eyes, looking a little surprised at the visitor, then coaxes it onto one of his fingers because its talons are a little sharp and uncomfortable on his shoulder. The sight of the message strapped to its leg is a little surprising also, but not overly-so. Stranger things have happened in the Dream.
Reading over the note, he is at first inclined to ignore it. General all-call to whoever might answer, save an oppressed people, he has seen this before. He has answered his share of said calls before, but these days is more inclined to give it a rest - or at least try to. Things, he has learned, are not always what they seem, and there is always another side to the story. And then his eyes scan across a familiar name.
What kind of grave circumstances could someone like Dark have fallen into? he wonders with an unsettled feeling. I had better see about this. Rising smoothly to his feet, he returns to his house to change from his loose meditation clothes into something more fitting for travelling, and stuffs an extra granola bar into his jacket pocket. Somehow these sorts of things always ended up involving travelling.
*****
When he arrives at Ascetic's Lookout, Kai notices Yao Chi decorating the rock next to the two unfamiliar jinbu and nods a silent greeting of familiarity to him, glances curiously at Rourke and his gryphon, and then listens attentively to what the tall, thin jinbu has to say. A frown falls across his narrow features. When Rourke has finished introducing himself Kai steps forward a pace and looks Abyssi squarely in the eyes. He addresses the jinbu with grim resolution.
"I am Kai Takahashi, and though Dark and I have not known each other long, I consider him a friend. If he has fallen into 'grave circumstances' as your note says, then it is my duty to look into it whatever the situation may be. I do not need a reward." His eyes narrow a little as if measuring the trustworthiness of the unfamiliar jinbu, and at length he continues. "I am trained in the ways of unarmed combat and kusari-gama-jutsu, and in the ways of stealth. I also have recieved a certain amount of training in the esoteric mysteries." He bows to Abyssi. "If you please, explain more of this geas. What, exactly, has happened to Dark?"
(ooc: note that Tamar’s actions don’t include any avatars other than the GM group at this point.)
Tamar steps out from the fold of dream that is the entrance to her home. The day has that strange haze that happens when a bright sun is desperately trying to erase the cloud cover that’s been around for days. She takes a few steps towards town before a nagging squeak in her ear makes her turn around. Something had Dream’s attention and he’d be a complete pest if she walked away before he’d gotten bored with whatever it is.
Perched neatly on her dead rosebush is a small bird. A small, strangely familiar bird. Tamar carefully slips the note from its small leg. She reads through the note twice. Saving oppressed masses isn’t really her thing. But she remembers Dark as being quite the shy and polite beast.
“Do you think we should go help him?”
Her answer is happy chittering that fades away as Dream returns to wherever he hides under her hair.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Tamar steps around a tree to find herself standing on the grass below Ascetic's Lookout. There’s no sign of the clouds that she left a few steps behind. There’s also no sign of a tree for her to have stepped out from behind, but there’s somehow no doubt that that’s what she did.

“Hello, Abyssi. My name is Tamar. From the few times I’ve spoken to Dark, I get the impression that he’s not the type to enjoy a good grave circumstance. I’m familiar with dreams and would use that knowledge to help the boy if I can.”

In a shady glen...

A fox/raccon like creature runs around the lush wooded glen during her daily excerise. One bear-like paw rushes infront of the other, her speed increasing as she trots around the low brushes and the trees.

The animal looks up into the largest tree of all to see a slender-looking winged cat girl lay on the thickest branch, toying with what appears to be a very primative tambourine. The animal snarls in a very annoyed fashion and barks up at the girl, snapping her awake.

"Aisling! You should be training yourself! Not sitting and playing with your tambourine!" the animal shakes her muzzle up at the girl, never ceasing her rounds about the glen, the sunlight making her deep orange fur light up like fire.

The girl however, mimicks the muzzle shaking of the creature, then sticks her tongue out like a child. Upon further inspection, the girl is revealed to be a female Angreal, but instead of the 'familiar' blue hues and pale features, she is a stunning contrast of firey reds and oranges

"Aisling do very well already! Second most powerful Reveler back in home world! Practice? Need NONE!"

The girl snorts and begins to dive off the tree limb when a shadowy black bird lands not to far from her reach. Curiousity glows within the girl and like a cat, she gets down as low as possible and paws toward the bird.

"Hello pretty bird. Name is Aisling... wanna play?"

The creature below watches Aisling and the bird, extremely wary of what her charge may try to do when she is unable to climb the tree.

"Aisling..." she warns.

"I fine Ayies! Ooo! The bird has a note... Aisling wonder what it says..."

Aisling quietly crawls up to the bird and takes the note, reading it in a very basic and childish way. Blinking, she drops the note down to Ayies.

"I barely understand! Is someone in trouble?" the curious Angreal then nods to the bird, clicking and chirping a soft thank you before flying down to meet her partner.

Ayies nabs the note in her jaws and rolls it out with her paws. She is able to read and understand everyword. Smashing the parchment with her large paw, a low growl is heard in her throat.

"Aisling... remember the tales I told you about? The ones where bad shadows tried to overtake your kind?"

"Yes Ayies. Why? Is person introuble like that?" The Angreal female looks wide eyed and naive, but her mind slowly begins to understand.

The co'kit Ayies nods, "Yes. We have to help. I do not know who these creatures are... but we must help! This place - fly us to it!"

Aisling stuffs her tambourine into her side-pouch and grabs the co'kit as if the creature was made of light cloth. Flapping her large rainbow hued wings, she begins her flight.

Ascetic's Lookout

"H... here... we... are... A... Ayies!"

The tired Angreal lands several feet from the spot where the others have gathered and puts the co'kit on the ground. Shaking her tired wings, she pulls a leather canteen from her side-pouch and takes a heavy drink.

The co'kit paws at Aisling, her long tail pointing to the others.

"This way Aisling. Be polite. Understand? We have a mis-"

Aisling cut her off with a wave of her reddish-brown paw.

"Aisling know Ayies. Aisling do her best to be nice... as she always is."

Running up to meet the group with tightly folded wings, Aisling bows as Ayies gets down on all fours, head low as her own sign of respect.

"Good day to you all... I am Ayies. We have received your note and came as quickly as possible."

Aisling nodded and chirped in her own brightness.

"Aisling Darsha! Angreal reveler, mystic of song and dance! Ayies told Aisling that your letter meant very bad thing to friend... I here to help if Aisling can. Know many songs to heal, protect and fix! Can fight too! Have dagger!"

Ayies dropped a paw on her muzzle, whining as only an upset animal can.

"Pardon her... she's in a flux that's worse than being an adolescent. But I too can fight to a degree. A co'kits claws have some use. As I too know minor elemental magics, mainly fire and lighting. I do both we both can assit you in this Journey. Slavery... never went over extremely well with Aisling's people and I'll be da-"

Aisling interrupts Ayies and stomps her footpaw down, the bells all around her person jingling loudly.

"Aisling will not stand for it! Aisling know how it must be... and it must be very bad! We can't let this happen again..."

Ayies simply glares at her charge and gives the group around them a pleading glance of apology.

** OOC - Hope you don't mind if I Enter Kei in for consideration. I'm trying to get into the swing of things. **

Kei was working in her lab as per usual when the sound of wings catches her ear. She turns to see the shadow like bird and the note attached to it's leg.

She makes her way to the window and takes the note. After reading it she scratches her head.

"Grave circumstances? Requiring my assistance? I don't even know this "Dark" character.. Hmm.. Haven't been oof the island for some time now.. maybe it'd be healthy to get out for a change.."

She nods to herself and Goes to her computer mainframe. She has the computer locate the exact coordinates of "Ascetic's Lookout". Upon locating it she downloads the directions into her biomech arm computer. She fetches her backpack and quickly rifts to the Lookout.

Ascetic's Lookout

She eyes the others there and spots a familure face. She walks over to Kai and bows. Rising to extend her paw in greeting.

"Ah Kai isn't it? Nice to see a familure face for a change."

She Nods to what the Jinbu has to say and gives a thumbs up.

"I'm not here to get paid.. If it conserns a fellow Dreamer I'm up to the challenge or retreiving anyone that might be held against their will."

She thinks for a moment when asked about what she has to offer in this excursion and sets her pack down, fishing around and pulling random items out.

"I'm an inventor and engineer. I'm part demon and can now control my transformations and I don't back down when faced with a challenge.."

((While I am not sure if I would be able to hold my own against such august company, this plot is too intruiging to pass up any chance at being a part of it. With no further ado, then...))

Tao was kneeling by a stream, hand cupped under the surface to gather a small amount of water, when the strange bird came into his field of vision. He lifted his gaze to the bush on the opposite side of the water's serene flow, fixing amber orbs upon the small creature. A soft smile comes accross his face, the Noble within him admiring of life in all its forms. His hand lifts from the stream, and he shakes it off lightly, water droplets scattering miniature rainbows about the small glen.

"What is this about your leg, small one?" he inquires of the shadow-bird, carefully untying the note with his dry hand, and offering the creature a perch upon the other. His eyes scan the note, a darkness spreading across his face in unspoken response. On the verge of crumpling it in his fist, he forces the muscles to relax and re-reads the destination he must travel to in order to receive more information. "Ascetic's Lookout...this place is unknown to me. Shadow!"

As he calls forth this last, a small creature bounds out of the trees surrounding the sheltered glen, and hops lightly up onto the Ta'Shain's shoulder. The black gryphon nuzzles him breifly, letting out a short chirp. Tao nods, and stands, thoughts of thirst forgotten now. "This bird should have a distinct pattern against the normal life of the Dream...do be a gem and trace the path for me, would you?"

The gryphon nods, staring first at the bird perched on the lupine's finger, then casting his gaze about the area. After a few moments contemplation, he chirps again. Tao lifts the bird up, encouraging it to be on its way, then sets off at a steady jog towards the Lookout, his path only slightly hindered by the fact that a bird in flight has far fewer obstacles to clear than an anthro on foot.

Ascetic's Lookout
The Briefing

Tao arrived just in time to hear Abyssi's speech, pulling in shortly after Kei's arrival. A short glance around confirms his initial suspicions, the named avatar all but assured the arrival of a least a few companions who were already familiar with each other. He listened patiently as the others introduced themselves and described their abilities, at last stepping forwards.

"I am Taongatira, and my companion here is Shadow," he begins, bowing lightly, and gesturing to the gryphon on his shoulder when he presents the second name. He takes a moment to look about the others again, before returning his gaze to Abyssi and Umbra. "As far as my reasons for being here, they are quite simple. Frankly, I detest slavery in all its uncouth forms...I cannot stand idle while others are shackled in service against their will. My talents...I am a scholar and mage, first and foremost, although I am able to hold my own rather readily in combat as well. I am also a healer, versed in both traditional and magical means of treating the sick and injured. While perhaps not so well versed in stealth as others, I am a hunter at heart, and familiar with the art of the hunt."

He steps back then at the conclusion of his introduction, to await any further information the enigmatic pair chooses to provide, as well as to observe the interactions of the others present. Always ready for a chance to study the unusual, his strange, frozen eyes dart about those present, taking in every detail he can glean.

((OOC:quick edit, just forgot to mention the healing stuff. Mrg...too late to think straight.))

*El Padre strode through the countryside, his mind going over the note he found attached to a small bird, so strange, like it was feathered in shadow. It feared no human, odd for a bird, and its message was easily removed. It was but a moment's consideration for the Luchador, and he was off towards the nearest twon, to find those who would know of this place, the Ascetic's Lookout.

A fitting meeting point, the masked priest mused, as he neared the craggy outcropping, topped in the verdant growth of spring. Apparently the note was not just for himself. He paused, to study the collection of avatars that had gathered, the strange features of creatures so foreign to him. But they were God's creation, he know. Of this he was certain. And perhaps, too, this meeting was His will...

El Padre stood silently, as massive and imposing as any of the rocks about, his dark eyes upon the "shadow-beasts" as the called themselves. He weighed each word that this Abyssi spoke. The priest knew of people who would have considered the shadow-beasts demons from looks alone, but El Padre could fee the honesty in their plea. When it came time for him to speak, El Padre stepped forward, sweeping back his cape to address Abyssi directly, his voice deep and clear.*

"I am El Padre, a man of God and a priest and a warrior. It is my sworn duty to help those who would be oppressed, be they human or not. My strength and my help comes with no price, it is done for it is His will that it should be so. I would help you on your quest to free your friend and your people, for no race shall be enslaved in His sight. Even if you do not require my help, my prayers will be with you."

"Gracias, Denise."

[OOC] You'll do fine, Tao. Dark-mun> This post is with the assumption that the activities at Cliffside Manor have already taken place. And, I post with Mortimer on odd-numbered days, excepting weekends. [/OOC]

Cliffside Manor
Edge of the Cliff

A cup of tea, a danish, a glorious sunrise over a vast expanse of land... What more could one ask for?

Activity?

Excitement?

Life?

Mortimer has to be one of the more bored individuals in the Dream, largely because he doesn't go out much. Nobody has been to visit him in weeks, and while the solitude has been a little peaceful, it's starting to gnaw at his mind. It isn't just the solitude, mind you, but the perfection of it all. Granted, the whisps cannot affect him directly with their illusions, but a muffin baked in an illusionary oven is quick real. Likewise a bed built by illusionary craftsmen is perfectly fine to sleep on.

The only thing interesting to the negotiator right now is the absolutely awe-inspiring view. Golden light spills out over tracts of rolling hills, thick carpets of forest, embroidered streams, fields speckled with wildflowers, and even a quaint little village off to one side. A sip of tea, a sigh, and solace found in the fact that he isn't jaded to everything. Not yet, anyway.

A bite of the danish, and then a little translucent dragonfly flits into view, parts of it flickering in and out of sight. Mortimer furrows his brow slightly, first irritated that he was interrupted, then he begins to tell himself that the whisps wouldn't interrupt him unless it was really important, and then he decides that it's been a while since he was irritated, so he grabs tight and holds onto that irritation, savoring it.

While he's busy experiencing his emotions, the little dragonfly circles a few times and then heads back towards the cottage. Mortimer slowly sets his cup of tea and danish down on the small plate next to him, gets up, and follows the whisp away from his sunrise.

Inside cottage

"What's all the commotion about?" he inquires as he walks in, and then he notices the little shadow-bird on his kitchen table. His first thought was that the creature resembled the two jinbu that visited him a while back. His second thought notices the note and quickly alerts the rest of his brain to its existence.

Carefully removing the message from the bird's leg and unrolling it, Mortimer reads the message once, and then again. After the second time he looks up at the four or five whisps flitting about and asks, "Back tracking?"

The words form in mid-air: Yes

"Thank you," he replies, not sure if he will be helping the jinbu yet, but it pays to know where to go, just in case.

"He was intriguing, yes, but should we be helping him?" Mortimer muses aloud, "It would mean leaving this place and going on sort sort of an 'adventure', so no more visitors here... Then again, there hasn't exactly been a glut of them recently. Might even meet new people. Hrm... It certainly seems like it would be interesting, if just to see the jinbu again. Abyssi could definitely carry on a decent conversation. What do you think?"

This last part is directed at the whisps, who flit around for a few moments before writing: Help Dark

"That's what I thought. Would you get my stuff while I start the spell?"

The whisps flit off, creating illusionary goblins to pack a traveling pack for the human, complete with spare changes of clothes and a few notebooks from his SWAT days that they think might be useful in the future.

As they busy themselves doing that, Mortimer moves back outside and begins a careful ritual. Most of the human's magic is translocational, and largely focused on portals that physically change the nature of the world, bringing two locations together, rather than magically transporting him somewhere.

By the time his pack is fully packed, Mortimer's incantation and ritual gestures are nearly complete. With a near-audible snap, a ten-foot half-circle appears. With glowing edges, the image in the half-circle is that of an area close to the meeting point, but not so close as to disturb anybody there.

Grabbing his pack from the illusionary goblins (who obligingly vanish moments later), he moves through the portal...

Ascetic's Lookout

...and allows it to snap shut behind him. There is the same number of whisps here, as well. While the same ones from the Manor could easily have blipped themselves here, it's unlikely that they are the visible ones. Of course, Mortimer couldn't tell you the difference, or even how many whisps there are period.

He just raises an eyebrow, adjusting his pack on his shoulders, and the whisps set off in a particular direction. By the time the negotiator arrives, all but one of the whisps has abandoned its visible form. Throughout the meeting point, a few of them look in on the interesting figures here, largely curious.

Mortimer replies to Abyssi's welcome with a courteous and professional nod. Despite having met before, he waxes informational, likely for the benefit of others present, "Mortimer Thaddeus Holston, Professional Negotiator. You know my more... esoteric talents, dear Abyssi. Not only does it look like you might just be the most interesting thing to happen to me in the past year, but the whisps have insisted. I do believe they like you."

As he concludes, he offers a nod to Umbra, as well. With a glance around, he takes stock of the others. Despite being very used to looking at what's inside of a person, Jack Manycoats still gives him a brief start. More than a trifle disturbing, that one, but the outside is just a shell. Getting at the yolk might help pass the time.

You should speak now.

Right...

A figure stirred at the rear of the throng. The grey-cloaked, mostly unremarkable-looking swordsman had been a veritable statue throughout the proceedings, his downturned gaze fixed on the two shadow-beings before him with only an occasional wary glance to the other speakers in his periphery.

"Sharlo Mercuun, swordsman." He said finally, lifting his eyes to reveal a face youthful in appearance save for a long jagged scar that ran from scalp to collarbone. "I've come on behalf of Orias Rofocale, Prince of Hell...#246." He said this slowly, scanning the assorted figures for a reaction to the Prince's name out of the corner of his eye.

I don't think you should count on the Prince's reputation to precede you...you'd best explain yourself fully.

Be quiet! I was just checking! Ire flashed across his features for a split second, to those who were watching closely.

"In case you were unaware, Dark...the shadow-beast in question, recently pledged his service to Prince Orias." His eyes darted between the two shadow-beasts, as if trying to read their reactions. "After receiving word of Dark's...predicament, his Highness charged me with seeing him back safely."

Perhaps you should elaborate on the assets you can bring to this rescue party...

"In...regards to my skills, I am-"
Be humble, now...
"-considered a master of swordsmanship in my lands."
I think you should explain my assets as well...
"Furthermore, the blade I carry is-"
Don't give them my name. They won't have heard of it...
I wasn't!
"-enchanted, and proof against any mortal weapon." He paused for a moment, as if racking his brain for something else to add.

"Naturally, I require no compensation." He concluded, stepping back and awaiting their response.

As I have said before, your skills as an orator need work...
You wanna do the talking next time? Be my guest!"

From the outside, it appeared that the swordsman was scowling to himself.

I'm in the process of writing up the next ic post for who's coming, but I have not completely made up my mind yet, so this sign-up will be open for a little longer.

Thanks to everyone for taking the time to post in here.

Smiling, Abyssi gathered the small crowd of avatars standing on the rocky Lookout to him with a wave of his long arms, and waited until he had their attention. They were an amazingly diverse and colorful bunch and he would have loved to take all of them if he had some way of provisioning them all. "Splendid! I am overwhelmed at the good-hearted responses that you people have shown me and your offers. Truthfully, I never expected such a large turnout. I fear that I am unable to take all of you with us. It is only after very difficult deliberations that I am able to make the decision of whom to bring."

"You are all stalwart beings, with strong minds and hearts, and I do not doubt that all of you would make excellent companions."

Abyssi licked his lips, contemplating. He stepped over to the grouping of avatars, making his way through them, and one by one, began to single certain individuals out and speak with them. Umbra followed a short distance behind.

Taongatira

Abyssi paused in front of the wolflike Ta-Shain, and looked him over for a moment. Then he smiled. "A scholar and mage, as well as having some skill in the arts of combat and healing. You seem to be a man of many talents. And I can see the strong determination in your face."

Umbra spoke to Abyssi. "A healer could be a helpful asset to us."

"I was thinking much the same thing." Abyssi clapped his hand on Tao's shoulder with a broad grin. "We do not have a lot of spare supplies, but if you are able to stretch your provisions a bit to include your gryphon pets, you would be most welcome to come with us."

El Padre

Abyssi listened to El Padre's words. "A man of God, priest and warrior. Your garb is unfamiliar to us." Abyssi was unfamiliar with modern wrestling, however, he could see the determined, steady, yet peaceful gaze of the human from underneath his enigmatic mask. "I can tell that you would be a reliable asset to our team, and I would be pleased if you came with us. Our cause is indeed a just one." Abyssi grasped El Padre's hand in a firm handshake.

Umbra spoke quietly. "I thank you for such a kind and selfless offer of your services in helping my Brother Abyssi." He allowed himself a small smile. "With your help... and the help of these others here, I believe we have a chance of rescuing Dark."

Kai Takahashi

Abyssi looked at the young man, and he smiled at Kai's firm, but still spirited attitude towards finding Dark. "Ah, it is good to make your acquaintance Kai Takahashi," he said smoothly. "I see Dark has made some good friends here. Kusari-gama-jutsu and stealth? Well, well, we shall have much to discuss, Kai." Abyssi seems to take this information approvingly. " As for what has become of Dark... I can not say quite for certain... Except that if we do not succeed in our goal, I fear you will not see your friend again, or at least not as you remember him. The geas I will discuss with everyone, so please, allow me but a few more minutes." Abyssi bowed with a smile and went to speak with the next applicant.

Umbra stepped forward, and then bent down on one knee to be more at eye level with Kai. "Although we have not met previously, I thank you for the friendship that you have shown my Brother," he said in his soft voice. "It is moving that a human and a jinbu would become friends and that you came to help him."

Although Umbra is very large, his facial features seem soft, possessing a certain quiet calm.

Sharlo Mercuun

Abyssi raised his brows at Sharlo, the young man with the great scar upon his face, and seemed to take special interest in what he had to say. "So, Dark had become the vassal to Prince Orias in this land! This is news to me. I have heard of the Prince, and I know that his vassals aid him of their own free will. Dark has been taken against his will, and if we do not take some action ourselves, I am quite sure he will remain lost to us, as well as to Orias."

Abyssi paused for a second... Seeing Sharlo apparently start making a scowl at himself for some reason. But he ignored it and went on: "I believe you would fit in well with us here, Sharlo. We both seek the same ends and you are most welcome to come with us." He smiled and shook Sharlo's hand.

Jack Manycoats

Abyssi raised his long eyebrows at the unusual appearance of Jack. "Hm, a very unique individual. What's that, little raccoon boy? His name is Jack, eh? Greetings Jack. Oho, he wants to know about the compensation before all! A smart man! Well, I will say that I have my sources. If you are interested in arcane items, or a bit of wealth for yourself, they will be given freely to you. If there is something more particular that you seek, do not hesitate to request of us. I hope that you will accept my humble payment, for your services."

He eyed Delon. "I suppose the boy is coming as well? Umbra!" Abyssi jerked his finger at Delon. "He is your responsibility. Make certain he does not come to harm."

Umbra put his hand on his chest and bowed slightly.

Yao Chi

It was at that moment that Abyssi seemed to finally fully notice Yao Chi. Abyssi turned his head, and his bright blue eyes went wide for a moment in surprise. "I can't believe this... A rainbow-colored dragon found one of the notes? This adventure could be quite dangerous, little Yao Chi. Are you certain you want to come with us?"

Then, the massive Umbra, who had been largely silent, looked at Yao Chi with his soft, quiet facial expression. Then he spoke to Abyssi. "Abyssi, I think we should bring him."

"Eh? You think so Umbra? He is very small..." Abyssi looked sort of doubtfully at Yao Chi and then back up at Umbra's face.

Umbra nodded. "I have a good feeling about this one. Besides, I am sure you have heard the folklore, of the rainbow dragons being good luck." He reached a blunt-clawed hand to gently pat Yao Chi. "The fact that one appears to us on the first day of our journey is a good omen."

"Very well, Umbra... Little dragon Yao Chi, you are welcome to come with us." Abyssi waved his hand, indicating for Yao Chi to join. Umbra smiled.

I don't mind however long you are away as long as I know about it.

If at any time anyone wants or has to stop participating for any reason, please PM Dark's or Abyssi's login rather than stop posting without me knowing what happened. If you vanish for longer than two weeks without warning, you'll be notified via PM and then your avatar runs the risk of being ejected/replaced.

((OOC: First off, my thanks for letting me in. This looks to be a great deal of fun, and I look forwards to interacting with you all. Secondly, I am presuming that this is what you mean by replying to our own individual posts, Dark? If not, please correct me so that I can do this properly from thence on. Anywhoo...let the IC commence!))

Tao nods gravely in response to Abyssi's words, and takes a moment to reply before the shadow-beast moves on. "The little ones need little in the way of food, so I doubt that will be a problem. If nessecary, they are capable of hunting for food sufficient to supply themselves." He did not trouble himself with how Abyssi had managed to realize that there was a second one that had not yet shown itself. He has run into a good number of people able to ascertain that fact without much in the way of inspection, and instead taps the bracer lightly after the pair have gone on to El Padre.

The figure on the bracer stretches, the metal melting and gathering atop his arm, soon reforming into the living gryphon Wind. She then trots up onto Tao's other shoulder, perching in similar manner to her 'brother'. The three of them commence looking over the others that the pair select, Tao whispering to them, and the pair responding in quiet chirps. More than anything else, it seems that the wide variety of individuals who have been selected has peaked the scholarly interests of the lupine; he is doing his best not to appear rude in the way he goes about this. El Padre and Sharlo being the only two of the group to have arrived after his first 'inspection', they are accorded the most attention, but the three soon seem to have satisfied their curiosity and quiet down to await Abyssi and Umbra's next actions.

Ascetic's Lookout

The Conclave Of Volunteers

As Abyssi turns his gaze to me, I turn mine to him.

He observes my small stature and says:
Quote:

"This adventure could be quite dangerous, little Yao Chi. Are you certain you want to come with us?"

I reflect a moment:
Certainty is about the only thing one can count in life on never having. Might I be frightened half to death of danger .... at times, yes. And yet, I want to help, if there is some way, even a small one, that I might do so.

I nod, to Abyssi, my crest rising partly, reflecting my thoughts.

Will I be accepted or rejected. I can feel Abyssi weighing my worthyness.

If by sheer will it were possible, I would become a dragon of legendary size, but alas, I am what I am, for better or for worse. A small, brilliantly scaled and plumed, avian with decidedly draconic characteristics.

Then Umbra, adds his opinion, and the prospects of my inclusion take a turn for the better:
Quote:

"Abyssi, I think we should bring him."

At his words, I raise my head a little higher in hope.

To Abyssi's reponding words and expression:
Quote:

"Eh? You think so Umbra? He is very small..." Abyssi looked sort of doubtfully at Yao Chi and then back up at Umbra's face.

I mantle my wings and open my tailfan and attempt to make myself look larger, my crest rising all the way upon my head.

Then Umbra continues:
Quote:

"I have a good feeling about this one. Besides, I am sure you have heard the folklore, of the rainbow dragons being good luck." He reached a blunt-clawed hand to gently pat Yao Chi. "The fact that one appears to us on the first day of our journey is a good omen."

In truth, this is news to me too. That I am a bringer of good luck ? And an omen of good fortune ?

Still, it makes me feel good. And then the friendly pat from Umbra, brightens my spirit.

Finally, Abyssi seals the deal:
Quote:

"Very well, Umbra... Little dragon Yao Chi, you are welcome to come with us." Abyssi waved his hand, indicating for Yao Chi to join. Umbra smiled.

Yes, I am grinning like a wee happy crocodile. I think perhaps that a warble or two have escaped from me also.

I could wax all wordy and ridiculous about how well I am going to do and that I will not disappoint and all such.

But instead, I simply beam at Abyssi, Umbra and all gathered around.

Ascetic's Lookout
GM Post

Abyssi clapped his hands together, smiling and looking over his diverse group. "Excellent." His party was composed of three humans, each with a steadfast look in their eyes, one wolflike anthro, one feathery rainbow-colored dragon, and... and... Abyssi gave up trying to rationalize exactly what Jack was, but he certainly looked interesting.

The tall jinbu sat back down on a toppled pillar of rock and started to speak. Umbra stood quietly off to the side. "I brought with me horses that were loaned from Nox, so you avatars will not have to hoof it on foot, at least as far as the village. Umbra and I are too tall to ride them so we'll walk alongside you. It will be a full day's journey when we set out from here, but first, I'll explain what I know about the situation..."

He turned to Kai. "I know you asked about the geas in particular. Now I'll explain it since it's something that I think the whole group needs to hear." Abyssi pursed his lips, as if thinking about the best way to begin a tale. "Dark, Umbra and myself are members of a race known as jinbu. A very long time ago, the jinbu people lived freely and peacefully in Darkside--Ahh, that is the realm on the other side of shadows, that Umbra, Dark and I are native to. You may think of it as a shadow-realm. I suppose it's a little confusing, but in time I think you will all become quite familiar with it."

"We, along with the other shadow-beasts, lived alongside the humans that lived with us in Darkside, and occassionally, travelled to the other side of the shadows, to here, the realm of the Sun which we call the Lightside. But those peaceful days didn't last."

Abyssi scratched his chin, and his blue eyes roved over the avatars, for a moment. He wondered how this news would strike them? Talking about a shadow-realm was sort of out of the ordinary. He took a breath and went on, his eyes taking on the reflective look of one who is recalling a story of the past.

"The jinbu people were..... coerced, into aiding the designs of a man who in those old days was the ruler of a certain Darkside nation, called Gaul. This was done through a magick curse of sorts... a 'geas'. This particular geas is something that..... takes away free will."

"In those times, Gaul was extending its territories. Bringing weaker cities and states under its rule, taking their lands for farming, their people for working the fields, cutting trees, producing goods, or mining." Abyssi gestured with his hand. "Gaul was ambitious, and wanted to extend its territory onto the Lightside. The emperor had his foot army, but that wasn't enough. So, myriad shadow-beasts from Darkside were... employed, under him, willingly or no..."

Abyssi shook his head sadly. "But it wasn't enough that the jinbu in those times were put under the geas. No... The geas was such, that it extended to even the subsequent generations of jinbu-ken... Even those... unborn. There were no souls that escaped it. Man, woman or child, it did not matter. Further... All jinbu not yet born... will also fall under the geas. It is hereditary." Abyssi looked away for a moment. "It is my belief that Dark..." He let the sentence trail off, and seemed to be at a loss for words. But then he sucked in his breath and continued.

"However, the ruler of Gaul, talented in the arcane arts as he may have been, was still a human. He should have passed away more than a thousand years ago... Gaul's invasion of Lightside ended when a group called the Kage No Ryoshi started to defeat his forces. Now,that is the part that confuses me! Why is the geas suddenly coming back into effect, when the Emperor has been dead--or at least should be dead, for as far as I know humans do not live that long--and his armies scattered, for a millenium?"

"But that is the situation we have now found ourselves in. And I believe it to be the reason, Kai, that Dark has disappeared. The fact that he was in the Dream wouldn't have helped him. All jinbu are cursed, that they could fall to this geas."

Abyssi shook his head regretfully. He looked into the eyes of the volunteers, pausing upon looking at Sharlo, with his scarred face, and El Padre, with his enigmatic mask. What kind of pasts, and hardships could such unique individuals have had?"Can you understand, what it's like... to know that your family, your mate, your children, all whom you hold dear... Have the potential to fall to this? To have to answer one voice, even if you, or they, did not agree?"

"To be honest with you people... Going on hero-quests isn't really my thing either. If someone approached me with the same story, I'd be a bit skeptical too. However, there are some things one needs to do, that are larger than just himself. I'm not a perfect man by any means, but even I acknowledge this. I'd rather me and Umbra didn't find ourselves the last free jinbu on Earth, in the Dream, or anywhere in between."

Abyssi took a breath, and folded his long hands. "I know that I've said a lot. If any of you have any questions so far, please, don't hesitate to speak up." In particular, Abyssi looked somewhat expectant of one certain question. He waited to see if it would be brought up.

Burning Questions

I listen in silence to Abyssi as he explains the ancient curse that fell upon his world and his people.

Great maker, how can such a smothering hand swallow up entire peoples whole unto their last generations ?

Almost from the beginning though, my heart cries out for the answer to another question. I stifle myself, until such questions are requested, then I contain myself no longer.

I warble out:
"Abyssi, how is it that you and Umbra are not called by this geas ?" I gaze from Abyssi to Umbra and back again. "Or do you anticipate that such will happen soon to you also ? And if so, however shall you resist it ?"

Ascetic's Lookout
Revelations

Tao and his companions listen intently as Abyssi goes about his explanations, the lupine quickly finding his own rocky perch, settling comfortably onto it in a lotus position. At the mention of horses, he blanches slightly, but recovers a moment later. Horses....why does it always have to be bloody horses? Oh well, I'll just let them know I can walk the distances just fine...thank the heavens for more suitable forms than this one.

At a few points, his ears lean forwards somewhat, as though trying to hear beyond what is said; this is particularly noticable when Abyssi does not complete his thoughts on Dark. Your belief that Dark...what? I will have to ask this of him... Shadow chirps softly to Tao at this point, and the lupine at first shakes his head, then nods instead. The black gryphon hops off his shoulder then, dashing off between the rocks, on what errand only he knows.

Wind, meanwhile, hops down into his lap and curls up there, the Ta'Shain's hand automatically shifting to gently stroke her head while he listens. As the proceedings wind to a close, he nods softly at the question posed to them all. Indeed, it is a difficult thing to imagine. I would not wish that fate upon even my most hated enemies. The lupine's expression hardens, now even more committed to this quest than he first had been.

Shadow returns then, seeming much pleased with himself from how he prances from rock to rock, at last settling in besides Wind expectantly. Tao lets out a soft chuckle, his other hand taking up its appointed duty as automatically as the first. After Yao Chi speaks, he decides to pose his own set of questions.

"I have a few questions as well, actually. Yao Chi has asked the first of them already, but I also wonder this. The geas...is it magical in nature? Or perhaps enacted by some strange energies present in Darkside? Perhaps you have some materials from historians of that time, that I might look at? While I am sure I would be far from the first to look at them in an attempt to find a solution, I have myself experienced several spells similar to the one you describe...though none have been so long-lasting, in truth," he rambles, looking somewhat off into space as he winds down. Shaking his head, he re-orients on Abyssi and continues. "My apologies, I do not mean to pepper you with questions, but I do have one last one...you spoke of something relating to Dark, but did not finish the thought...might I ask what it was you believed of him?"

Unfortunately, the time between Abyssi's speeches was not enough for Sharlo to recover from the shock of who his traveling companions would be. The "dragon" who reminded him more of the Prince's fruity desserts than a beast of legend... The musclebound masked "priest" who expressed endless confidence in the ability of his deity to singlehandedly deliver them victory... And last but not least, that...thing and his kid. Even the other human and the wolf-person, while not showing any glaring flaws in a quick look-over, appeared to be barely-armed.

At the moment you hardly appear to be a fine catch yourself. Close your mouth, open your ears, and reserve your judgements for later.

Quickly correcting his somewhat gaping expression, he cast an incredulously alarmed look back at the sword. Don't tell me you can't see anything wrong with this situation! He looked back as the lean jinbu began to speak again, this time wearing a look of naked suspicion on his face.

Darkside...a on the other side of the shadows? His look quickly turned to puzzlement, and the sword had to stop him from interrupting at that moment.

Shh. He is not finished yet.

Sharlo tried his best to push the question to the back of his mind, but as it turned out the speech that followed did that work by itself...if only by overflowing his brain with far more pressing questions. An ancient curse? That subverts the free will of an entire race and all of its offspring? What manner of sorcery could be capable of such a thing?!

Upon looking at him, Abyssi would have seen open confusion in the swordsman's gaze. Inwardly he gave the answer to the shadow being's question, How the hell should I understand that?! That kind of devilry just isn't supposed to happen!

Reflexively, he had his mouth open immediately upon Abyssi's call for question. However, the sword cut him short again.

If you speak now in your confusion it will do no good. At least plan out your interrogation silently before you commence with it.

As infuriating as the sword's presence was at times like this, he knew it was right... The others no doubt had questions, let them buy him time.

As it turned out, one of his major questions was answered by the diminutive dragon. Part of another was addressed by the lupine fellow. Thinking quickly, he jumped on the end of the question...

"I-If I may as well!" He raised a hand. "You have also not said what you know has happened to Dark..." He stammered slightly, having a bit of difficulty phrasing the question. "Also, what alerted you to the revival of this curse, if you two were not yourselves affected by it?"

Re: The Shadows of Ecstasy 1: Origins (Closed/Last update March 22nd)

Kai bows again to Abyssi, glad that he has been accepted into the mission group and then bows again to Umbra. "Dark has shown himself to be a person of rare quality," Kai tells the large jinbu quietly. "I hope such friendships are not so uncommon, or that they could become more common."

He steps back then to quietly listen and observe what happens next. His dark eyes give away little of his thoughts as they flick across the others who are to be companions in this journey, though a small, quick smile relaxes his face for a moment when he considers the 'good omen' dragon. Then he turns his attention back to Abyssi to hear what the jinbu has to say.

He listens with calm deliberation as the tale is told. When the story of the geas and subsequent enslavement is told he closes his eyes and appears to think for a few moments, gives a rueful sigh, then refocuses on the discussion at hand. Several questions have indeed presented themselves for immediate consideration, and fortunately the others seem to be thinking along the same lines. He waits for them to ask the first, most important and obvious questions, waits for their answers, then half-raises a hand for attention. "At the risk of sounding obtuse, before we start can you tell us a little more about how things currently stand in Darkside? Does the Empire still exist at all, or have things fallen into a wilder state? Is sorcery still in use, and is it common? Please forgive the questions, but I would prefer to have at least a little idea of what you intend to lead us into before we go striding manfully forward."
