"Things change around here, sometimes we're closer to some things than others ... it's rare that anyone finds me by LOOKING for me."

The Woofaboomus takes a sip from his coffee mug. It is twice the size of the others and bears the likeness of a striped, orange cat.

"There's a river to the east, I recall, and a ... a crater, where I've seen a young elf man cavorting...to the south. Believe it or not, there's a masoleum to the north. These are strange woods. There are stories here as thick as fallen leaves."

He looks at each of the visitors in turn.

"Does any of this help? If you need to pace the tarrain, I'd be happy to guide you."

"Ah yes. That makes it right about... here." Porter points to a spot on the map, and a glowing dot appears there.

"That takes care of that. Would you perhaps favor us with a tale of how you came to be? Something about yourself, that we might know you better?"

OOC: Any Mappers that want to return to help Demonwolf (as a second, seperate thread from the mapping trip), I'm heading back there now. This mapping thread will be heading on to Audrath's home shortly, as the full Mapping Team's next stop.

"A story? Well, I know one or two..."

The Woofaboomus takes a sip and regards the fire, then begins:

It was long ago, in the wild woods of North America. I was barely sentient then, more a force of nature than a person, but I wasn't far off. Even then I knew everything that happened in my woods, and often acted to protect them -- and the creatures that lived there.

In one particular spring, a child wandered into my woods. She was all of four human years, and had spotted a rabbit in the underbrush, and tottered off to find it. He father, a widower, was on the front porch of their cabin on the edge of the woods, asleep in his chair. He'd been crying all night for his wife, the child's mother, who had died the previous spring -- perhaps on the same day.

So the exhausted father fell asleep, and the child wandered into the Wild Woods.

He and his wife had built a cabin on the edge of the Woods, far from civilization, out of a desire to be alone together -- and to tame the wilderness. Every day before her death he had felled the giants of the forest, and hunted its beasts.

For all that, he never did enough damage to matter, and I left them in peace. When his wife fell ill, he stopped his toils and watched over her day and night. Their child was often left to her own devices, playing with wooden blocks or dolls her mother had made for her.

When the man awoke, it took him a while to realize his daughter was missing. He hadn't actually realized he'd fallen asleep, and he'd dreamed of his wife. It was she whose loss he mourned when he blearily opened his eyes and realized he'd slept.

It was another five minutes before he remembered he was watching the child, and looked for her.

And an hour later, when he realized she wasn't playing hide-and-seek, he wept. He knew the Wood well enough to know that her chances of survival were ... not good.

..........

((OOC: To be continued))

The Woofaboomus takes another sip of his drink and paused, as if in thought.

“And??”

He sits back quickly. “Er, uh, sorry. Take your time. Of course. Heh.” He smiles sheepishly and waits.

Porter listens quietly to the story. He seems concerned when his host just sort of trails off into silence.

Porter stands, and bows formally to Woofaboomus.

"Very well, sir. It was a pleasure and an honor meeting you, and adding your home to our survey. Let me give you a small token of our passing."

Porter hands Woofaboomus a small ceramic medallion.

"Normally I would put up a small sign, but I wouldn't wish to mar the unspoiled beauty of the wild wood by doing so in this case. Should you wish us to return, to hear the rest of the story, merely press the medallion and speak. I shall hear you."

Porter re-opens the portal to his ship, and gestures for the mappers to return through it.

"I think it's time we made our farewells. Let us go back to my ship for a while, before we go on to visit General Audrath."

OOC: Exiting via the above portal will take the mappers (and our readers) back to the Mapping Cat Team II thread, to regroup.

Bargamer bows formally to the forest god. "A wonderful story. Surely the difficulty of selecting one story out of the millions would be as difficult as selecting one leaf out of millions of trees. I do not begrudge you the pause either. The forest does not tell all of its tales, or even part of one, all in one sitting."

"It was good to visit the forest again. If you should ever need my services, you have but to call thru the forest-mind." *Sam waggles bye-bye too.* Bowing again, Bargamer leaps thru the portal.

OOC:unless someone decides to speak to me before i leap...?

Arc was saddened to hear that they were leaving so soon. The fire was warm, and the cider delicious. He had just gotten to a point of total relaxation when Woofaboomus' story abruptly cut off.

"Memories..."

Somehow he knew what the forest spirit meant by that, and understood what it was like. Standing up again, Arc returned his now empty cup and thanked Woofaboomus for his hospitality. It was time to go for now, but the dragon would remember this place fondly and endeavor to ruturn someday to hear the rest of the story.

Reluctantly, he boarded Porter's ship.

Re: In the Wild Wood [WOOFABOOMUS' Home thread] new

((OOC: Found it! I seem to keep getting lost))

The Woofaboomus recovers himself, and begins to re-tell the tale, knowing his words would echo through the wood, and those drawn to it would hear his words, and come and re-join the firelit circle. Coffee brews, meat sizzles, and a fine woodland repast is there for as many visitors as show.

Distraught, the man threw himself into the search, knowing it to be suicidal, but with his daughter and his wife gone, he had nothing to live for. He was content to be enfolded into the wilderness and lose himself, as he knew his tidy little cabin would one day be enfolded by the Wood.

As I say, I was barely self-aware at the time. I was aware as an ancient tree is aware, a boulder on which sacrifices are made is aware, a storm called down by angry voices is aware, a pool of blood feeding a strange new flower is aware. Yet even then I felt this man's pain as no other. It was not the pain of a lost child, of a fallen oak, of a hawk-taken rabbit pup. His pain felt like a forest fire, something to awaken the wilderness to move toward its own defense. The other beings within the wood also felt his pain, some repulsed by it, some drawn to it, and the dark things that sloughed toward the distraught and widowed father sought to answer his call and grant his wish.

Deep within me, I felt that this was a thing that should not come to pass.

Drawing energy from the man's cries, I brought myself into presence, coalescing my personhood from a million points throughout the Wood, appearing at his side in a form similar to the one you see before you. Bigger, rougher, more blood-thirsty, but a beast-man in Indian garb as you see.

It is a testament to the man's distress that the terror that form induces was lost on him, and he ran to me, I imagine wishing to be ripped to shreds, ending his pain and rejoining him to his family. Instead I grabbed him and lifted him into the low branches of a mighty oak that is ... was ... sacred to me, and faced the Dark Ones that had come to answer his call.

In the language of the unlanguaged, I told them that they should not have this man's pain, knowing that my command would be unheeded, as the mindless forces of destruction are beyond reason when they are called by their prey. In this they are like sharks, and other Things of the Deep.

The man, dazed, disoriented, watched as the Dark Things approached from the verges of the clearing I stood in, and leapt at him, their claws scraping curls of bark from the branch he stood on, and I, Alpha Male of the whole forest, knocked them, one at a time, as they flew at him, to the ground with a mighty sweep of my clawed hands.

Enraged, their blind eyes turned to me, the barrier between them and fresh blood. Not recognizing their GOD, they came at me, a flood of Dark Beasts, jaws snapping, claws tearing, heavy bodies battering me.

But I was not vulnerable to physical attacks then, when the entire Wood was my body, and they were each killed, spines snapped and heads crushed, as I defended myself and my charge with the brute force that was the only language enraged Beasts of this type could hear. And I knew as I did so that I was killing off one of the defenses of the Wood, for as much as these blind Beasts sought to harm me, they were part of what kept the Wilderness intact, protecting it from the encroachment of civilization. To protect this one man, I had removed the claws of the Wood.

I knew what I was doing, but to this day I don't know why.

It is the first step of the journey that caused me to be as I am now, wandering the worlds in search of a new Wood.

When all was calm again, I turned to the man and looked into his mind. I saw the picture of his lost little girl, and his deceased wife.

"Your child yet lives," I told him. "And your wife is not far off either. I can reunite you, but your daughter will die, and be lost. I can help you in either direction, what do you choose?"

And I felt his pain increase, as often happens before a wound can heal, and he sobbed aloud. "God help me," he said, "god help me, I choose my wife."

In the Wild Wood things die every day. There is no mourning, no judging of right and wrong, no railing against an imagined Fate. It is merely the way things are. That day, the man fell asleep in the crux of the tree and did not awaken, and the next thing he knew he and his wife, who had been hovering close, tormented at their separation, were reunited. In the land of the dead there is no right and wrong, either, and his guilt left him. Where they went from there I do not know, except that their end was a better one than the Dark Things offered.

The child was too young to defend herself, and also died that day, with more pain than her father had, but with no guilt. As young and unformed as her spirit was, it dissipated into the Wild, and she is yet a part of me.

A very, very small part.

Since that time I have gained enough of humanity within me to mourn her passing, and that of the Wild itself. Though in the larger Wilderness of the multiverse, its passing is as insignificant as that child's.

And the Woofaboomus sipped again from his cup.

"That is the story I have to tell this night. Make yourselves at home in my campsite, perhaps tell some tales of your own -- my Wood is big enough for them all. I will be close at hand, and may join the revelry from time to time."

With that the Woofaboomus faded from sight, and it seemed as if he had never been there at all. But the supplies were replenished and fresh, and the fire well-stoked, and no one travelling through will fail to find exactly what they need, close at hand.

OOC: We came from here, The Welcome Center.

Approaching the Wild Wood.
Bargamer walked confidently through the dense wood, the feeling of Power getting stronger and stronger the closer he got. Finally, he stopped, much to the relief of his companions, whom he had driven mercilessly here. Bargamer took a deep breath, and held it, finally letting it out with a shuddering sigh. "We are here," he said simply. Then Bargamer sprang into activity, and whirled. "Roll call! Sesame Oil! Soy Sauce! Good! Who else has made it?" Bargamer scanned faces eagerly.

Bargamer lifted his face to the sky, and gave a decent rendition of a wolf call. "AROOOOO! Woofaboomus! We, the Salvation of the Dream, the Chosen of the Dragon Gods, have arrived! Attend, and grant us your audience!" Needless to say, Bargamer was feeling dramatic.

*The hulking form of the Woofaboomus is seen on the edge of the clearing, as if silently arriving -- or was he always there, unmoving? He gestures welcome to the newcomer*

Please, make yourself at home. Anything you might need is likely found nearby ... are you hungry?

The Clearing

Bargamer goes to one knee and bows his head, speaking from that position until he is bid to arise. "Great Woofaboomus, Avatar of the Wild Wood, I thank you for meeting us. As long as the memory of the Forest is, surely you remember me, Bargamer, Graduate of the Temple of Elemental Kungfu, in the company of another canine traveler, Porter, of the Mapping Cat Team. I come on a mission of utmost importance, that which concerns the entire Dream in its danger." Bargamer makes a small leaf sign to ward off any evilness the speaking of the unholy name may evoke, and spoke. "ANNAMMU is awakened."

[OOC: I've been having the worst luck with monitors lately, again I apololize for my absence.]

Fortunately, Sakeru has no problem finding the indicated meeting place, as he has spent many a month traveling before. He blinks in mild surprise at Bargamer's wolf call.

'Salvation of the Dream?' he wonders. I may be getting in over my head here.

The dragonman does his best not to look too surprised at the arrival of Woofaboomus, and bows to him politely. While he waits for the large creature to answer the elf, he looks around to see who else had managed to make the journey from the Welcome Center to these woods.

Clearing

Bargamer smoothly stands. "The Forest provides! Crysanthamum tea with rock sugar would be just fine, thank you. I thank you for the offer of food, but do not hunger at this time. But, er, I believe Pepper the catgirl warrior would appreciate something." Bargamer sweatdrops at Pepper's lack of respect.
