Mapping Cat Team II - Explorers wanted! (Open, thread-hopping RP)

Welcome to the Mapping Cat Team II cartographic expedition. The Avatars who join this group will be off on a fun, thread-hopping RP journey to explore and map the known reaches of The Dream. The results of our efforts will be the second edition of the NCD Map.New people may join the team at any point, either in this thread (if we are 'here'), or in any thread we are visiting. The only requirements to join the team are the ability to post in all forums, and a sense of fun and adventure. People may leave the team at any point, or rejoin later. No one (other than Porter) is locked in to play for the whole trip. I will post links in this thread so you can find the team's current location. We may visit several threads in a row before coming back here. To have your site visited by the Mapping Cat Team, please post your site's information to the Map Additions thread in Settle, or the Mapping Additions thread in Enter, both of which also have the rules for getting your site mapped. We will be pretty much visiting the sites in the order listed in that thread. Map locations can exist in a Settle Forum thread, or in an RP thread (any forum). NOTE: It is perfectly acceptable to request to be mapped, but to also request no visit from the Mapping Cat Team RP Players. For example, if your posting time is limited, and you just can't respond to us, or if there is an intense RP in session at your site that would be disrupted by our visit. Note: The Dream, by it's very nature, drifts and changes constantly. If you want to be very specific about your site's location, such as 'six hours walk West of Paradox Springs', that's fine. If you prefer to be vague, such as 'a mist enshrouded island, somewhere out in the ocean', that is fine too! The final map will try to accommodate both the 'fixed' and 'vague' locations, and is expected to include a database that will allow Avatars to look up places by name, or by the name of the avatar(s) found there, or by type of place (homes, businesses), or by environment (desert, woods, sea, space).

The adventure begins outside the Welcome Center, near the center of The Dream. A pale blue shuttle spacecraft has landed, and Cargomaster Porter has stepped out, to meet some people who already volunteered to be part of this expedition.

"Well, I guess this is the place," Peter says to himself as he clears a ridge. No sooner does the field come into view than he spots the shuttle. "Yeah, this must be it..."
After a minute of circling and landing, Peter jogs up to the shuttle. After catching his breath, he approaches Porter. "Hello! Is this the meeting place for the mapping expedition?"

Carl comes out of the Welcome Center, cup of coffee in his hand, to see what the hubbub is all about.Hearing Karol's comment, his curiosity kicks in. "Mapping?" he asks the administrator. "That sounds like a whole lot of exploring to do."

Porter smiles as he looks at the growing team of adventurous souls."Welcome everyone! I hope all of you will join me, to be part of the Mapping Cat Team II. As you may have heard, I am preparing an expedition to map The Dream, so I can help Karol Luis to update the map she made a year ago. Karol, come up here please." Porter gestures for Karol to join him, and continues once she has. "Karol has been so busy running the Welcome Center, and doing all the other wonderful things she does for all of us, that she hasn't had time to update that wonderful map that she and the first Mapping Cat Team made. I really want to thank her for that effort, and for her support of this project to continue mapping The Dream. Let's hear it for Karol!" Porter gestures to Kaol, and applauds. OOC: Yes Arc, this is the right place. I recruited people in many threads throughout The Dream, but this is where the mission will start. We will hop from this thread to others, but will return to this thread after each visit. This makes it much easier for new members to find us!

Karol blushes a bit as she moves to stand by Porter. "I'm sure you'll do a great job - would you mind if I tagged along for a bit? I think Ceera can manage the Center for a while.. " And odd look passes her face as she peers over at the Center. ".. Though I don't think I even have to leave to go with you..." She mutters softly, then shakes her head, her eyes clearing.

The fox smiles and applauds Karol. Wow...mapping the Dream? What a project! And to go from that to running the Welcome Center...very impressive.Once the ceremonies die down, Carl goes over to Porter. "Would you have room for one more in your group? Exploring around the Dream has been half the fun for me since I got here."

She does seem to be enjoying helping you there. And as long as she enjoys it, she'll be very dilligent about the work. And as you and I both understand, I don't think you'll be absent from the Center for long, even if you stay with us for quite a while." "Carl, isn't it? I don't think we've been properly introduced, but I have seen you around. Yes, certainly, all are welcome to join this expedition." "Well, our first 'stop', I think, is right in front of us. If you have no objections, Karol, I would like to have your Welcome Center on the new map. After all, it's home to more Avatars at once than anywhere else in The Dream."

(([OOC:] Continued from The Welcome Center. [/OOC]))As Arc left the confines of the Welcome Center into the surrounding area, he closed his eyes and inhaled deeply. It felt good to be out in the open air. It was warm and fresh, just the way he liked it. He was greatly looking forward to seeing the many different locales of the Dream. "And apparently, so are a lot of other people," he thought to himself as he noticed the small group of people gathered around Porter's ship. He must've arrived a little late, as the large canine was already addressing the crowd with a booming voice. As the dragon got closer, he could begin to make out what he was saying. quote:

"KAROL?!" Arc stopped dead in his tracks, the gears in his mind screeching to a halt. "But didn't I just...? Wasn't she...? How...?" Arc couldn't understand it. He had said his goodbyes to Ms. Luis in her office just moments before heading outside, and now here she was, directly in front of him receiving a round of applause from the crowd. Arc knew Karol couldn't have slipped past him and made it to Porter's ship before he did, so how in the world did she...... Suddenly he remembered something he'd read in the book she'd loaned him so long ago. There was a section about the Dream allowing people to exist in multiple places at the same time. Or at least what appeared to be the same time. Arc winced and rubbed his temple as he tried to make sense of the whole thing. "If I live to be a million years old," he thought to himself, "I swear I will never fully get used to this place. But fate wasn't done messing with him yet. quote:

"Doh!" Arc said, loud enough to make his presence noticed by the rest of the group. He'd just spent days in the Welcome Center preparing himself for his next great adventure. An adventure he'd thought would take him into the farthest, unexplored reaches of the Dream. Instead, it seemed he was destined to return to the safety of the WC one more time. His grand quest had lasted a whole two and a half minutes before hitting yet another delay. That stupid cat in the sky must have been laughing his ass off. (([OOC:] ...And so is this PG! [/OOC]))

Carl nods. "Nice to meet you....Porter, right? I believe we crossed paths a while back, in Karol's office...just before I..." The fox catches himself, remembering the discussion he overheard at the Pool of Dreams. He also heard the uncertainty in the canine's voice when he responded to Karol's plan to let Ceera watch the Welcome Center while she was out. Hmm, better tread softly on that subject... He sees the armored dragon from before(Hi Arc Nova!), Porter (didn't i just leave him? darn portals...), as well as another monk.(That means you, Gumba Master.) "Greetings, honorable one. *Bargamer bows.* I am Bargamer, Scion of Medivh, of the Temple of Elemental Kungfu. *The staff on top of the backpack trembles.* And this is Sam. Who are you?"

OOC: Well, let's see. I think the only remaining person 'out here' who is also 'in there', inside the Welcome Center, is Karol herself. Up to you as to how you want to handle that one Karol. I'll wait for you to post before we go in, or we could just 'visit this site' from where we stand.

Carl has a stray thought cross his mind. "I've gotten pretty familiar with the inside of the Welcome Center, but are there any landmarks of interest in the vicinity around it?" He looks around at the group. "I don't know about anyone else, but when I leave from here, I'm usually heading a fair distance away. I've never explored the general area."

"Well, the Welcome Center stays pretty close to the middle of the Dream - so Master Mu's Monestary is usually only a few miles away. Town Square is always close by as well." She points to the large cube on the horizon."Other than that, everything is changeable - however, if you're looking for the Welcome Center, it will always be easy to find."
