INTRODUCTION TO THE DREAM new

MZDM MEMORANDUM
TO:THE NAPPING CAT DREAMERS
FROM:KAROL LUIS
DATE:APRIL 30, 2003
RE:INTRODUCTION TO THE DREAM

Dear Napping Cat Dreamers,

This memo contains the Premise, Theme, Purpose & Getting Started guide for this site.
Premise
You are God. Or at least, a god, and you can manifest yourself in The Napping Cat's Dream (a multiverse of infinite realities inside the mind of a cat) as one or more avatars (finite character manifestations of your divine self). Avatars discuss, interact, play games and/or adventure on a series of 13 Forums, each with its own emphasis.

Within each forum are threads where your avatars post their dialogue or describe their actions one after the other in a series of posts (a post is a single contribution to a thread). Each thread of The Napping Cats Dream represents its own entire space-time continuum. A separate dream path with its own world, history and god.

The effectiveness of your avatar's actions in any given thread is ultimately determined by the initiator of the thread who is known as the God Moderator (GM). The GM is the god who dreamt that particular thread of reality into existence and is now the one responsible for moderating the interactions of all avatars who enter.

Theme
The Napping Cat's Dream is derived from the Master Zen-Dao Meow webcomic. The webcomic focuses on one avatar (Master Zen-Dao Meow) and his journeys through The Napping Cat's Dream. However, the forums focus on YOUR avatar's journey through the many threads of The Dream. Adventure threads within The Dream can be set in any genre, milieu or historical period (Sword and Sorcery, Science Fiction, Superhero, Detective, Horror, Spy, Western, High School, etc.)

Purpose
The primary purpose of The Dream is to provide a creative outlet for participants who enjoy role-playing, comics, storytelling, philosophy, games and other fun.

The secondary purpose is to allow participants to develop their characters, artwork, acting and writing skills to a level of professional quality.

The tertiary purpose is to make the community so intriguing, that participants would be willing to pay a subscription fee to cover the cost of running the site and allow the artists and moderators to do this for a living.

Membership
In order to participate in The Napping Cat's Dream, you must first be registered (Register here). This allows you to participate on the initial NCD forum, known as "ENTER". To participate on the other forums you must contribute about 30-40 substantive posts and be sponsored by any current member with 100+ posts. Details on Avatar sponsorship found here.

If you continue to participate, you may eventually become a Psychedelic Avatar and be given an official numbered PA Card with artwork of your character. We are no longer creating Avatar Cards.

Getting Started (in 6 easy steps)
  1. Make up an original avatar (Avatars based on copyrighted characters or species from existing works are not allowed.)
  2. Register your character here.
  3. Post your character's profile in the Avatar Profile field following the listed categories (Age, Gender, Species, etc.) This lets other players, moderators and artists know your avatar's appearance and powers.
  4. Make your first post to the ENTER forum. You can either create an "Arrival/Intro" thread that describes how your avatar arrived in The Napping Cat's Dream
    or
Find a thread that interests you and have your avatar join in on the established action or discussion in a creative way. Make sure that the thread is not labeled "Closed" or "Restricted".
  5. Always follow the 6 Dream Directives(see next memo)

Those are the basics of getting started, but please read on!

Sincerely,

Karol Luis,
NCD Mapper and Moderator

THE SIX DREAM DIRECTIVES new
      #333374 - Wed Apr 30 2003 07:06 AM

MZDM MEMORANDUM
TO:THE NAPPING CAT DREAMERS
FROM:KAROL LUIS
DATE:APRIL 30, 2003
RE:THE SIX DREAM DIRECTIVES

Dear Napping Cat Dreamers,

This memo contains the six main guidelines you should follow when participating in the Napping Cats Dream. If you remember nothing else, remember these!
1. CREATE ORIGINAL AVATARS ONLY
Please do not create Wolverine, Gandalf, Han Solo or any other copyrighted characters or species. It is okay to play a character with a similar personality or similar look to a (c) character, just don't use their actual name or their identical look. This applies to species and organization names. No Wookies, Vulcans, or Star Fleet Command. A halfling is okay but not a Hobbit ((c) Tolkien). Don't include any additional elements from copyrighted works in your character's premise (original organizations, vehicles, weapons, magic items, planets, etc. from copyrighted works).

2. THE GOD MODERATOR RULES THE THREAD
The player who initiates any thread is the GM (God Moderator) and is always in charge. You must accept the GM's version of what happens, even if it is different from what you post.

3. MAJOR ACTIONS CAN ONLY BE "ATTEMPTED"
All major actions that will alter the flow of the narrative, such as attacks, spell use, etc. must be described as ATTEMPTS whose outcomes will be determined by the GM.
Examples:
You cannot do this: "Jill shoots her arrow and slays the evil beast."
You can do this: "Jill shoots her arrow and attempts to slay the evil beast."

4. DON'T ASCRIBE ATTRIBUTES OR ACTIONS TO OTHER AVATARS
You can only control your own avatars. You can never post actions for someone else's avatars. Don't presume to ascribe physical details or historical details to other avatars (unless your avatar is intentionally lying for narrative purposes). This also applies to settings created by other players.

5. RESPECT YOUR FELLOW PLAYERGODS (Even if your Avatars don't)
Hostilities and fights between avatars are permissible, but always respect the Player God behind the avatar. Do not use the Private Message (PM) system as a continuation of hostilities. Using the PM system to harass other players will result in banishment by lachesis.

6. KEEP THE FORUM CLEAN (Both Visually & Verbally)
  • No excessive profanity or graphic sex talk
  • No spam outside of the PITCH forum
  • No pornography
  • No stolen art (original art okay)
  • No extended text strings without breaks
  • No images over 550 pixels wide
  • No use of ALL CAPS for entire thread titles (reserved for Admin threads)

The forum moderators will delete or edit your posts as necessary to ensure compliance with these guidelines.

If, as a GM or as a Player you feel someone does not obey or understand the rules, please contact the forum Moderator via Private Message to discuss it.

Okay, you know the basics, you know the six Dream Directives, now let's find out about the 13 different forums...

Sincerely,

Karol Luis,

A. TWO KINDS OF ADVENTURE THREADS new
      #333377 - Wed Apr 30 2003 07:35 PM

This is the detailed role-playing guide for players and moderators.

A. Two Kinds Of Adventure Threads
1. Informal Adventure Threads
Informal Adventure Threads are basically any kind of thread where some form of "action" takes place above and beyond mere discussion. Avatars may post as often as they like and may be left to moderate themselves after the GM sets the initial premise. See below: "Rules For Moderators (Informal Adventure Threads)"

2. Formal Adventure Threads;
The only real distinction between an informal and a formal Adventure thread is the use of scheduled Action Updates and a limited number of participants. This formality will (theoretically) allow for a less chaotic environment and more structured milieu.
The GM will set specific weekly times by which each avatar's actions must be submitted (three times a week, twice a week, once a day, etc.). The GM will then post an Action Update which summarizes the effectiveness of the various avatar's actions during the previous play period and introduces any new narrative elements.
It is recommended that the GM limit the number of players between 5-10. The GM should lay out a brief, loose premise of the genre/milieu with an indication of what the general plot of the scenario will be. See below: "Rules For Moderators (Formal Adventure Threads)"

B. RULES FOR PLAYERS new
      #333378 - Wed Apr 30 2003 07:50 AM

B. Rules For Players
1. Rules for Players (General)

Creating an Avatar
You can create any type of character you want ( furry, human, robot, alien, ghost) EXCEPT copyrighted characters or species from existing works. This also includes accessories such as weapons, armor, vehicles, etcetera whether in your profile or simply introduced for one thread.

Once you have a name for your avatar you must register that name as a member of the forum. You register here.

After you have registered, post your character's profile in the Avatar Profile field following the listed categories (Age, Gender, Species, etc.) This lets other players, moderators and artists know your avatar's appearance and powers.

Becoming A Psychedelic Avatar / Getting an Avatar Card

The avatar card series finished with Avatar #500. There are no current plans to initiate a new card system.
If your avatar continues to make substantive contributions to the forum, he or she may be awarded an official Psychedelic Avatar Card and join the ranks of the Psychedelic Avatars.

The current policy regarding the awarding of Avatar Cards is detailed here. The primary criteria will be continued active participation and creative contributions to The Dream, be it through discussions, role-playing, moderating, artwork, etc.

Avatars are encouraged to keep their profiles as up to date possible, as the profile information is used to create their Avatar Card portrait. HOWEVER, cards may not always reflect the most recent changes, as the artist may have started on the art before the latest update was made. The initial Psychedelic Avatar card is a "freebie". The artists will do their best to capture your character, but it may not be the perfect representation that you envision.
A Psychedelic Avatar may always commission another card from one of The Psychedelic Artists which will be framed and can be used as a Bonus Card.

The avatar cards are free for the player but very expensive to produce. Therefore we reserve the right to use the avatar card imagery in merchandise to offset the cost of producing the cards. No player is required to actually buy any of the merchandise.

See THE PSYCHEDELIC AVATAR INDEX for a current listing of all Psychedelic Avatars and their cards.

The God Moderator Rules The Thread
When you participate on an adventure thread initiated by someone else, that person is the God Moderator regardless of whether they call themselves a "GM" or not. The GM has the ultimate say on the rules of that thread (whether it be informal or formal). Even a complete newbie who arrives in The Napping Cat's Dream for the first time is the master of the narrative universe contained within that thread. The GM's decision, no matter how seemingly prejudicial or unfair, is final. If something happens to your avatar you don't agree with, you may communicate to the GM via a Private Message and perhaps work something out.

Communicating Thoughts, Actions, Dialogue
There are no set format rules for displaying the various types of avatar communication methods. Everyone seems to have their own preferred style and we find no reason to insist on a universal format for this sort of thing, but a player should be consistent in the format they choose. If the GM wants to insist on a certain format for their thread, they may do so.
The following appear to be the most common formats:

Thoughts
(Perhaps parentheses for thoughts?)
John Doe thinks, "Quotes can be used, if is made clear that they are thoughts."
Maybe Italics should be used, we'll think about it.
(Maybe italics within parentheses?)

Actions & Descriptive Narrative
::Double colons are pretty common for actions and descriptive narrative
(but the colons can cause problems with emoticons of this board)::
*One asterisk is probably okay*
**Two asterisks may be okay too**
Maybe just having no quotations is enough to indicate a description.

Dialogue
"Dialogue within quotes is probably best on an Adventure Thread."
If the post is entirely dialogue, quotes may not be necessary.

Out-Of-Character (OOC) Communications
((Double parentheses have become the norm to indicate that the player is communicating some information to the readers/fellow players/GM. It is not being expressed by the avatar him/herself.))

Actions Are Always Attempted
Any action affecting other characters or of a significant narrative-altering nature (spell use, attacks, etc.) should be expressed by your avatar as an attempt to do something. The results of your attempted action will be revealed by the GM on the next Action Update. The GM can veto the reality of any previously described action or event which the player describes.

Attributing Things To Other Avatars
When immersed in the narrative of an Avatar Adventure Thread, you may be tempted to attribute actions or characteristics to other avatars. In general, we would strongly recommend NOT doing this (unless you seek permission from the other avatar's player ahead of time). Don't create past histories for your avatar that allegedly involve other avatars (unless your avatar's statements are intended as lies). Don't say that another avatar once had a particular nickname or was at a particular event. Don't assume that another avatar goes along with some activity that your avatar is doing and presume to describe his or her compliance in your post. We emphasize this because the player (and not other players) should be the one who gets to decide the details of their own avatar's actions and biographies (subject to modifications by the GM).

Forum Moderators
In the event of a dispute, please contact your forum Moderator. Forum moderators may edit or delete posts in whatever manner they feel necessary, and will also provide clarification on the rules if needed.

Injury, Death and New Properties
Injuries and death apply only to an avatar on the particular thread where the event occurs and has no impact on the avatar on any other threads.

If an avatar receives a gift, weapon, pet, new power, new costume or even a physical transformation, it is up to the player whether he or she wants to keep the new property as a permanent part of their avatar. Obviously, new aspects received on one Adventure Thread should not be introduced to other Adventure Threads which are already in progress.

Revising Of Posts
Please do not go back and revise the content of your posts (this is what we like to call "illegitimate time travel"). It screws up the entire narrative structure and ruins the game when you do this. We want players to be able edit posts in order to make immediate corrections, or fix incorrect terms, bad grammar, bad spelling, and bad links. But if editing is abused and used to edit and revise content, the editing privilege may have to be revoked.

Absences
If you are involved in any adventure threads and will be away from the forum for a period, please notify everyone regarding the dates of your absence by posting on the ESCAPE forum. You should also put a note regarding your absence dates in the Absence Notification field on your MY PROFILE page.

Leaving For Good
Avatars can cease participating at any time but their avatar card and contributions will not be removed in order to maintain the historical continuity of The Napping Cat's Dream. Unless there has been severe or willful abuse, avatars are almost always welcome back no matter how long their absence or how bitter their departure. Use the ESCAPE forum to announce all permanent departures.

2. Rules For Players (Formal Adventure Threads)
These additional items apply to players on Formal Adventure Threads.

Biographies
In a Formal Adventure Thread, you may be expected to create a brief biography for your character appropriate for that thread's premise. Try to make your bio "fit in" with the genre and milieu of the thread. If the milieu is based on a generally known historical period it will be easier to ascribe believable details to your character. If the milieu is some kind of fantasy or alien setting not based on known history, then try not to fabricate too many details about the greater world, since those details will be the GM's responsibility. It is best to PM (Private Message) your Biography ideas to the GM prior to the adventure or post your bio proposal on the Announcement/Sign-Up Thread (See Section IV-3 below).

Post By The Deadlines
If you commit to participating in a Formal Adventure Thread with scheduled Action Updates, please be responsible and get your posts in by the deadlines.

Absences
If you are involved on a Formal Adventure Thread, in addition to notifying your absence on the ESCAPE forum, please discuss (via Private Messages or Out Of Character posts) with all concerned God Moderators the best way to handle the situation. Either the adventure thread will be put on hold until your return, or the GM will work out a creative solution to have your character "absent" in a way that won't compromise the thread narrative. You should also put a note regarding your absence dates in the Absence Notification field on your MY PROFILE page.

C. RULES FOR GOD MODERATORS new
      #333379 - Wed Apr 30 2003 08:06 AM

C. Rules For God Moderators

1. Rules For Moderators (General)
Informal Or Formal?
First a GM must decide if he or she wants to create an Informal or a Formal Adventure thread. We would recommend Informal Adventure threads to get one's feet wet.

Closed or Open?
Each adventure thread either allows new avatars to enter at any point (Open) or does not allow new avatars to join in once the adventure has started (Closed). All Closed adventures should be marked "[Closed RP]" in the thread title. Open adventures don't have to say "Open" but you may do so to be extra inviting.

A GM Controls A Thread, Not The Greater Dream
Keep in mind that the reality created within your thread applies to your thread only. If you create a thread describing a military invasion, it applies only to the world initiated by your thread of reality, and not to the greater Dream as a whole. Avatars may respond within the thread as if the events are impacting the entire universe (because in that thread it appears so), but nonetheless the greater Napping Cat's Dream remains unaffected by any cataclysmic events within any particular thread.

200 Post Thread Limit
In the same way that a massive amount of text requires paragraphs and pages to break it up into digestible chunks, we asks that threads be no longer than 200 posts. You can have as many threads as you like in a series that comprise a single adventure, as long as no individual thread is greater than 200 posts.

Use Original Concepts
Like for players making an avatar, you can use any original concept for making your thread, but may not use copyrighted materials. This includes the rules or setting of a tabletop RPG, worlds from books, television, or other media, and similar unless you hold the copyright. Parody or inspired by a program or such is generally acceptable, but the administration and moderatorial staff reserve the right to make decisions at their discretion.

Respect Other PG's Works
Similarly, many Player Gods have put significant effort into their own creative works, and would rather they not be used without prior consent. This means that anything from a small hut in the woods to a large globally-spanning military cannot be used in a thread without consent. Species are also covered in this, so if you see an interesting specially-named species in someone's profile, be sure to check.

2. Rules For Moderators (Informal Adventure Threads)
An Informal Thread can be as simple as describing a location where your avatar resides or as complex as a military invasion.

No Real Rules
For the GM, there essentially are no rules aside from the general ones above. Anyone (even a first time arrival) can initiate an Informal Adventure Thread and control the proceedings on that thread to the best of their abilities or let things evolve with little moderation at all.

Abandoned Adventure Threads
We do ask that if you no longer plan on actively moderating a thread, that you let the forum Moderator know this by posting to the LOCK THREAD REQUEST thread.

3. Rules For Moderators (Formal Adventure Threads)
The following rules/recommendations apply primarily to Formal Adventure Threads but it is recommended that all GM's read them.

Announcement/Sign-Up Thread
Once a GM decides to run a Formal Adventure Thread, he or she may wish to begin by creating an Announcement/Sign-Up Thread and do the following:
  • Describe the proposed scenario (genre, historical period, rough premise).
  • Announce how frequently the Action Update Deadlines will be.
  • Announce approximately how many avatars will be needed to play (5-10 recommended).
  • Solicit player participation.
and once the adventure has begun
  • Post a link to the actual adventure thread
  • Use the Sign-Up Thread for OOC discussion regarding events on the main adventure thread (optional). (This thread should be in PERFORM, and will be moved if it isn't.)
The GM will need some method to determine who gets in the game (assuming there is greater demand than slots). The GM may use some kind of arbitrary lottery (pick a number between 1 and 100) or do it as a "first come--first served" system. If the GM has certain avatars he or she would particularly like on the adventure, the GM may send out invitations via Private Messages.

First Post On The Formal Adventure Thread
Once a GM has finalized his or her roster of players he or she can initiate the actual Formal Adventure Thread. It is recommended that the first post of the thread contain the following five items:
  • A list of the Action Update Deadlines indicating how frequently players are expected to post.
  • A list of the names (and aliases) of all participating avatars as an easy reference guide.
  • A brief description of the world (and/or historical time period), the genre, and the rough scenario/plot line for that particular adventure (without giving away surprises). NOTE: The GM should not bog down the thread with tedious history (just stick to the essentials).
  • A description of the specific locale of the Adventure Start Point (or describe multiple locales if there are multiple start points).
  • (Optional) An instruction to the participating avatars to write a Brief Biography in their initial post describing the history of their character and a Mini Arrival Narrative detailing how their avatar arrives at the Adventure Start Point.

Adventure Start Point
The adventure has to have some kind of beginning point at a pre-specified location which the GM has created. This is the Adventure Start Point. The Adventure Start Point may be different for each avatar, but the GM has to make it crystal clear exactly where he or she wants each avatar to describe themselves as being when they have finished their Brief Biography and Mini Arrival Narrative.

Action Updates
These are the regularly scheduled key posts by the GM which summarize the effectiveness of the various avatars' actions during the previous play period and introduce any new narrative elements.

Private Messages
The GM should use Private Messages to discourage inappropriate behavior or give bits of information that only certain avatars are privy to. A GM may send Private Message reminders to players to get their posts in before the deadline passes for the next Action Update.

Avatar Power Levels
There is no statistical methodology to measure avatar power levels. The GM should look at how a player describes their powers and adjust the adventure thread so that the avatar can enjoy displaying their characteristics without their powers unbalancing the narrative.

The GM may have to suggest creative adaptations for character powers in order to work appropriately in the genre. If the GM is running a spy genre with no magic and a wizard avatar wishes to play, the GM should think of ways that the wizard can have clever devices that do the equivalent of his spells that would be appropriate for the non-magical spy genre.

Genres
The Napping Cat's Dream is a "Philosophical Furry" realm of infinite realities. All threads are offshoots of that reality but need NOT be similar in tone or milieu to the MZDM cartoons. In fact, one of the key premises of MZDM is that these avatars have existed in all sorts of worlds in all sorts of past lives. We want a variety of genres represented:

Suggested genres include (examples in parentheses):
Historical Periods (American West, Caveman, Ancient Egypt, Medieval Europe, etc.)
Detective (Raymond Chandler, Agatha Christie, etc.)
Spy (James Bond, etc.)
Superhero (Marvel, DC, etc.)
Post Holocaust ("The Road Warrior", etc.)
Horror (H.P. Lovecraft, Bram Stoker, Stephen King, Anne Rice, etc.)
Alien Invasion ("X-Files", "War Of The Worlds", "Independence Day", etc.)
Outer Space Adventure ("Star Wars", "Star Trek", etc.)
Sword & Sorcery (Tolkien, "Dungeons & Dragons", etc.)
Surreal Fantasy ("Alice In Wonderland", "Yellow Submarine", etc.)

Allow For Furries
Since most avatars will be "furries" (anthropomorphic animals), whichever genre a GM chooses should just allow for the fact that furries exist in that world and it is just accepted. There can also be elves, dwarves, humans, robots, aliens, etc., but it should be considered acceptable for the population to consist of furries as well.

Sincerely,

Karol Luis,
NCD Mapper and Moderator

No. Characters that are alternates of existing players do not need to have 30 posts before they are authorized to post in all forums. Post a request to the SPONSOR AN AVATAR thread, or PM Krinele Fullin directly to have them authorized. Please note in your request that they are alternates.

I know [AVATAR NAME] from another RP forum or website. Can I sponsor him immediately?
All new players, regardless of where they are from, must still complete about 30 posts before being authorized. Current avatars can only bypass the post restriction for characters they will be playing, not for new members. Even if you already have RP experience, the 30 post limit allows you time to acquaint yourself with our rules and playing style.

I don't want to play [AVATAR NAME] anymore. Can I transfer them to a different player?
No. The administration believes that an Avatar should only be played by the Player God who originally conceptualized them. Thus we do not allow Avatar transfers between Players.

Who can sponsor a new avatar?
Anyone who is already authorized and has 100 posts can sponsor a new avatar.

What threads can I post to
You may participate in any thread that does not have 'Closed' in the title. Please make sure you read the entire thread before posting to it.

If I make additional avatars, should I create a new login for him/her?
Yes. Each avatar you play should have its own login.

When am I allowed to change my login (display) name?
If you have zero posts, if the name change is of purely cosmetic nature, or for reasonable in-character name changes (like marriage) purposes. If you wish to make what is essentially an entirely new avatar out of an existing one, please make a new login.

When will I get my Avatar Card?
The Avatar Card series was completed at Avatar #500. There are no plans to create further cards at this time.
The current policy regarding the awarding of Avatar Cards is detailed here. Expect it to take at least 6-12 months and remember that not every avatar is guaranteed a card. The primary criteria will be continued active participation and creative contributions to The Dream, be it through discussions, role-playing, moderating, artwork, etc.

C. PERMISSIONS AND COPYRIGHTS new
      #333381 - Wed Apr 30 2003 08:31 AM

C. Permissions and Copyrights
Who owns my avatar?
You do. You own full copyright in the character you create. In addition to playing your avatar in The Napping Cat's Dream, you can use your avatar in any other stories, comics, artwork or merchandise you wish.

Will my avatar appear in the comic or on other MZDM art?
Perhaps. If you specifically would like your avatar to appear in the comics as a cameo character (and/or on merchandise, Adventure Card art, etc.) please indicate so on the PERMISSIONS thread. Contrarily, if you do NOT want your avatar to appear in the comics (and/or on merchandise, Adventure Card art, etc.) please indicate so on the PERMISSIONS thread. The official Psychedelic Avatar Cards are the only avatar images that may be used on MZDM merchandise without specific granted permission from the player.

How are the comic cameos decided?
The same way dreams are decided. Why do certain people and not others appear in your own dreams? It is fairly random and based mostly on whether a certain avatar would "fit" a particular circumstance rather on any intrinsic merits. If your avatar does make an appearance and you don't feel it is an accurate representation of your avatar, just remember that none of your avatar's appearances in the comics are "real" or "canonical" for your avatar's history; they are merely Zen-Dao Meow's dream version of your avatar.

Can I use other people's avatars? Can they use my avatar?
No one can use anyone else's avatar in stories, art, comics, etc. without permission. Please seek permission before using anyone's avatar. You can grant permission for others to use your avatar on the PERMISSIONS thread.

Does this mean someone else can play my Avatar with my permission in that thread?
No, actually. The above is intended to provide a means for permission for artistic endeavours such as artwork and poetry. Another application could be the initial setup post of a Role-Playing thread, but not use of the Avatar or login for normal Role-Play.

I've seen an Avatar about that's this really cool species, can I play that?
You'll have to check to see if it's a generic species (like fox) or something custom-made by that Player or one of their friends. We do allow Players to play Avatars that are of a species that another PG made up, but only if they have permission. Be aware that most Players hold their creations dear, and aren't likely to release permission to anyone that asks.

There's this place in [AVATAR NAME]'s profile, or that they use a lot in RP, can I use that?
Unless it's an "open source" location (like Anycity), locations created by a Player God are considered the property of that PG. If you wish to Role-Play there, make sure you get permission to do so. A lot of work goes into creating a scenario, and most PG's don't care for seeing their work used without consent.

Can I include one of the original Psychedelic Avatars (#'s 0-12) in my thread or story?
No. Just like any of the other avatars, you cannot use any of the original avatars in stories without permission. However, non-narrative fan art of the original avatars is always welcome.

Can I use the MZDM card frame/logos for my avatar picture?
No. Although unofficial cards and "mock cards" were permitted during the first year of the forum, the official card frames are now reserved exclusively for the Psychedelic Avatars and official MZDM artwork by The Psychedelic Artists. If you wish to use a card frame that resembles the design of the official avatar card, you may use this one. Any Psychedelic Avatar can include their Psychedelic Avatar # on an unofficial card as long as they don't mimic the lettering/logos of the official card.

Can I use my Avatar Card on other forums?
We would generally recommend against it because it is inappropriately large for most forums. You should check with the forum moderator first or use a smaller portion of the art.

[EDIT]
"The historic Karol Luis Map is no longer be maintained (pending dynamic reconceptualization). The page below is preserved for archival display." -- Furilius Pitch 7/5/2004
[/EDIT]

D. The Map
How can I be included on the map?
Post to the MAPPING ADDITIONS thread to be put on the list for inclusion. Full Rules are available there.

Do I have to have a home/location thread to be included in the map?
A home thread is not necessary if the location is mentioned in other threads (i.e. Yin/Yang Glade, Town Square)

Where do the map images come from?
Map images are selected by Karol Luis (map maker) based on posted descriptions. Players can also submit images. Submitted images can be linked from the MAP ADDITIONS page and also be emailed directly to Karol at karolluis@inter.ab.ca.

E. HISTORY new
      #333383 - Wed Apr 30 2003 08:38 AM

E. History
When was this site created?
The true origin of The Napping Cat's Dream (NCD) is unknown. The Master Zen-Dao Meow webcomics first appeared online in the summer of 1999. The first MZDM "Mystical Messageboard" appeared in Jan 2000. The first MZDM forum on The Nice appeared in Feb 2001. The NCD forum expanded into 13 forums in March 2002. The NCD migrated to its own forum in April 2003 and switched from the UBB.classic software to UBB.threads.

Who created this site?
The credit is usually attributed to the first two Psychedelic Artists, Bret Ward and Patrick Schaefer. However, some suspect that Furilius Pitch is the true mastermind. Still others believe that Master Zen-Dao Meow dreamed the site into existence as a means to solve his koan. In any case, at this point The Napping Cat's Dream is a collaborative project with numerous creators, including The Psychedelic Avatars, The Psychedelic Artists, and perhaps even you.

Who is L. Miner and what's with his game?
L. Miner is a wraith-like being who often appears in the Dream as an albino fox wearing a porcelain mask. His game consists simply of guessing who the next avatar to post will be. The 200th poster gets to start the next L. Miner's Game thread. This simple, yet uncannily addictive game, is the most popular series of threads in The Napping Cat's Dream.
Sincerely,

Karol Luis,

GLOSSARY new
      #333384 - Wed Apr 30 2003 08:53 AM

MZDM MEMORANDUM
TO:THE NAPPING CAT DREAMERS
FROM:KAROL LUIS
DATE:APRIL 30, 2003
RE:GLOSSARY

Dear Napping Cat Dreamers,

This memo provides definitions for commonly used terms. With Thanks to Pastangum for the original version.
  • Avatar: A registered character, usually with a distinctive appearance, personality, ambition, etc. See also Psychedelic Avatar.
  • Avatar Card: See Psychedelic Avatar Card
  • The Broom of Punishment: When anyone makes a bad (or even a good) pun, other avatars may threaten to bring out The Broom of Punishment.
  • Cameos: Cameo appearances by avatars within the MZDM webcomic.
  • Closed RP: Term describing a thread that is closed to new participants. Somewhat similar to Formal RP, only formal RP's sometimes have openings, due to player-loss. Closed RP's usually have 'closed' in the thread title.
  • The Dream: Often used as a short way of saying The Napping Cat's Dream.
  • Dream Ditty: A self-contained MZDM comic strip that is often non-narrative.
  • Dream Yourself Ditties: Self-contained comic strips written by avatars but edited and illustrated by one or more Psychedelic Artists.
  • EnterTheDream.net / EnterTheDream.com: Portal pages with easier to remember URL's for use on stickers, business cards and verbal mentions.
  • Formal RP: A role-playing thread with formal of predetermined restrictions, parameters and/or participants. Participants often join Formal RP's by first posting to a Sign-Up Thread.
  • Furry: Any character that is animal based. Many furries in the dream are anthropomorphic (having human characteristics).
  • Bonus Cards: Any additional official Psychedelic Avatar Cards beyond the initial one is considered a Bonus Card. There were a handful of unofficial cards allowed in the first year featuring the MZDM logos. These are considered unofficial Bonus Cards.
  • Gift Cards: Gift cards are Bonus Cards that were not awarded through the standard nomination system but were commissioned or given as gifts but still approved as "official" Bonus Cards.
  • GM: See God Moderator
  • God: See Player God
  • God Moderator (GM): The Player God with final decision-making power on a given role-playing thread. This is usually the PG who created the thread; under certain circumstances the role of GM may be lent to other gods.
  • The Great American Comic Strip Koan: The subtitle of the webcomic, Master Zen-Dao Meow.
  • Home Thread: A thread that describes your avatar's home or business within the dream. Usually run as an Informal RPG. All home threads should be posted in SETTLE.
  • IC: See In Character
  • In Character (IC): Term indicating that certain content reflects the thoughts, dialogue or actions of any avatar rather than the Player God.
  • Informal RP: A loose role-playing thread where a GM sets up a general premise, but the avatars get to decide how actions affect them with little or no moderation by the GM. Usually these threads involve little plot and involve avatars coming and going like at a party.
  • Intro thread: A thread that describes your character's entrance to The Napping Cat's Dream. Intro threads are a good way to introduce yourself to the other avatars, and to provide any back story you have created for your character. All intro threads should be posted in the ENTER forum.
  • MAD: See Multiple Avatar Disorder
  • Master Zen-Dao Meow: (i) The name of the cat with the koan who is the star of the webcomics. (ii) The name of the webcomic itself (iii) The overall website and/or the forums.
  • MasterZDM.com: (i) the URL of the webcomic. (ii) "MasterZDM.com" and "MasterZDM" are both also used to describe the team of creators or business entity for legal and copyright purposes.
  • MMB: See The Mystical Message Board
  • Multiple Avatar Disorder (MAD): Any Player God with more than one avatar is considered to have MAD. The more avatars, the more severe the condition.
  • Mystical Message Board (MMB): The name of the first Napping Cat's Dream forum.
  • MZDM: Short for Master Zen-Dao Meow. Depending on the context, it can refer to the character, the comics, the entire website or the creative team/business entity.
  • The Napping Cat's Dream (NCD): (i) The entire 'plane of existence' in which all the avatars exist. From their point of view, everything that exists and happens is in the dream of a napping cat. (ii) The entire group of MZDM forums.
  • NCD: See The Napping Cat's Dream
  • The Nice: A community of webcomics of which MZDM is a former member. The MZDM forums used to be hosted on The Nice forums until April 2003.
  • Non-furry: Any character that isn't animal based.
  • OOC: Out Of Character. This denotes comments made by a Player God, which the avatars generally are not aware of.
  • Open RP: A role playing thread which is open to anyone. Entrances by avatars into the Open RP should make sense, given the setting and context of the established premise and setting of of the thread. Open RPs often have 'open' in the title.
  • PA: Usually "PA" stands for Psychedelic Avatar, but depending on the context, it can sometimes refer to Psychedelic Artist.
  • PG: See Player God
  • Player God (PG): The real person/human/player behind the avatars. Who you are Out Of Character.
  • PM: See Private Message
  • Private Message (PM): The bulletin board system allows registered users to send private communications to other registered users, usually for behind-the-scenes planning.
  • Psychedelic Artist: One of the official MZDM artists.
  • Psychedelic Avatar (PA): An avatar who has transcended mere participation and has been recognized as a formal character of The Dream and awarded a Psychedelic Avatar Card.
  • Psychedelic Avatar Card: An official card with an avatar illustration given as formal recognition of the avatar becoming a Psychedelic Avatar. Each card has a number corresponding to the total number of PA's at the time of avatar's transcendence. (Technically one less than the total number, as the avatar numbering starts with # 0)
  • RL: Real Life. Term indicating that certain content is about the real world or real life as opposed to In Character role-playing.
  • RP: Role-playing. A thread for avatars to participate In Character; this is often an adventure scenario.
  • RPG: Role-Playing Game. Master Zen-Dao Meow is a forum RPG. Sometimes the term is used synonymously with RP to indicate a particular role-playing thread.
  • Signature Card: Old name used for a Psychedelic Avatar Card.
  • Sign-Up Thread: A thread where avatars "sign-up" to indicate their interest in participating in an adventure.
  • ZDM: See Zen-Dao Meow
  • Zen-Dao Meow: Whereas "Master Zen-Dao Meow" can refer to the comics, the site, or the character, Zen-Dao Meow almost exclusively refers to the character himself. Whether or not ZDM is truly a "Master" is open to speculation and will vary from story to story. Some have argued that the term "Master" in his name should properly be read as a directive rather than a title.

So you still couldn't find the troublesome term? Check out these additional glossaries:

Vortimus:

She's a cartographer, and those are maps.

Additionaly, I must recomend an amendment. You said no Starfleet officers, no wookies, halflings, yet no Hobbits. Yet what of character classes that come from copywritten universes? What if I want to write in a wandering human Jedi? (Like the one I have at the Jedi Academy.)

And if human beings are copywritten, then I'm going to be very disapointed.

Forrest. (I'd be Griffin if I'd thought a Jedi were permissable.)

We did have a Jedi and asked him to change it.

We basically don't want forum members to use any specific elements from copyrighted works (characters, organizations, vehicles, weapons, planets, species, magic items, etc.).

You can have a space mystic with a light sword who abides by Taoist principles, but you just can't call him a "Jedi".

ADDENDUM – USE OF THIRD PARTY MATERIAL new
      #495663 - Sat Jun 19 2004 09:26 PM

MZDM MEMORANDUM
TO:THE NAPPING CAT DREAMERS
FROM:KAROL LUIS
DATE:June 19, 2004
RE:THE DREAM RULES! ADDENDUM – USE OF THIRD PARTY MATERIAL

Dear Napping Cat Dreamers,

MZDM Does Not Host Third Party Images
MZDM is happy to offer hosting for original artwork, or artwork specifically created or commissioned for your avatar to display of the forum, but we can't host supplemental, third party imagery that is neither owned by MZDM nor the player.

Please only submit 'original' artwork (created or commissioned by the player) for hosting.

You are still free to link to any images you find on the Internet to supplement your profile with reference pics, but MZDM just cannot host them.

Use of Third Party Images Within Original Art
Third party photos or other elements incorporated into your original artwork in a supplemental manner, may be okay (such as a photo of clouds used as background), depending on the distinctiveness of the material and the extent of the use. Again, it's not something anyone here has the time to review, so the safest bet is just to stay away from third party material.

Sincerely,

Karol Luis,

THE DREAM RULES! - Updated For The Times! new
      #597615 - Mon Apr 24 2006 01:47 AM

Well, a few new rules have snuck in over the past while, and I suppose it's time to call everyone's attention to them. Some more major work is probably in store, but these address some recent issues that have come up, or that we forsee coming up.

One big one that's gone un-mentioned is, well... are the updates that had to go into effect with the cessation of new Psychedelic Avatar Cards. A lot of lines have been struck out for this purpose, to preserve the information that was once there about them.

The spirit of the First Dream Directive "CREATE ORIGINAL AVATARS ONLY" (which would have been quoted prior to this update in any correspondance on the matter) has been expounded upon. This is primarily in the "Use Original Concepts" general GM rule. Running a thread straight out of Greyhawk (a Dungeons and Dragons setting, copyright Wizards of the Coast) is right out, and so is using the ruleset in general.

Another issue that's come up, and ties into the First Directive, but also the Fourth, is the use of species, places, and so forth that have been created by other Player Gods. Several entries under Rules for Players, Rules for Moderators, and Permissions and Copyrights have been added to detail the (non-inclusive) rights held by Player Gods on their works. But to summarize: If someone is playing something or someplace special, get their permission before using it.

ADDENDUM - BOARD-ACCEPTABLE ROLE-PLAY new
      #599177 - Thu May 11 2006 05:36 PM

MZDM MEMORANDUM
TO:THE NAPPING CAT DREAMERS
FROM:KRINELE FULLIN
DATE:MAY 11, 2006
RE:THE DREAM RULES! ADDENDUM - BOARD-ACCEPTABLE ROLE-PLAY

Dear Napping Cat Dreamers,

Due to concerns about differences between our definition of "PG-13" and that of the movie industry's, we have decided to adopt the term "Board-Acceptable" instead. This term identifies closer with the concept we are trying to convey, namely things that we consider acceptable for our forum, often called a board.

Of course, we'll also be giving you some general guidelines on what's acceptable. Please remember to keep the spirit of what's acceptable in mind, and not just the letters we write here:

Violence Levels

As Administrators, we know that violence in a combat-oriented thread is rather unavoidable. However, we ask that you do not post excessive violence. Excessive violence is a term left up to the Forum Moderator, but in general if you have not warned Players that it may happen (in sign-ups or a "[mature]" or "[violent]" tag in the title) graphic descriptions shouldn't be posted.

Sexual versus Romantic RP

While we do have a forum called FLIRT (as I am very much aware), and there are inevitably relationships that progress to the point where offspring (or the actions leading up to offspring) may be expected, open sexual conduct should remain out of the public eye at all times. "Heavy petting" and the like is also out, but general romantic moments (kissing, hugging, cuddling, etc.) are allowed. In this department, the tag "[mature]" allows for no additional lee-way, although it may still be an idea to warn people that you intend for things to be quite romantic or perhaps plan on making a discrete fade-to-black. Please keep any fade-to-black tasteful.

Forced intimate encounters

Our primary concern is for interactions leading up to, and we'll be blunt, rape. The actual posting of such an interaction should be obviously right-out, but the events leading up to such (ex: a kidnapping with that intent) are also out. For the record, we also consider magical compulsion (ex: a geas, love spell) to be the same. If the Avatar, under normal circumstances, wouldn't willingly engage in sexual activities, then we're going to call it rape. PG consent doesn't make this allowable, as technically you have to consent for just about anything on the board.

Profanity

Censored profanity, such as "*beep*", "[censored]", or similar variants are considered acceptable in posts, but we do ask that Player Gods keep it in check and ask themselves if it's necessary to their plotline. However, as our filters are not completely inclusive, we also ask that PGs take the time to review their own posts for profanity that we're not bothering to remove. While a small degree in IC conversation is acceptable, actual profanity either in descriptive narrative or OOC conversation is not.

Sincerely,

Krinele Fullin,
NCD Administrator
