Your ideal Dream?
      #640735 - Tue Dec 16 2008 03:00 PM

Hey all! Blatant market research going on, here. Don't mind the fancy decor or the slogans, they're just here from our sponsors. Yes, the corner's where I piled all the "Vote A" signs I stole a few weeks ago.

Anyhow, the point of this being here, particularly here in ENTER, is to get a feel for what you, our dreamers, feel would be important to you if you had your ideal forum structure.

Some ideas to get things flowing, of course:
Customized home pages - pretty simple stuff, for the unregistered visitor it'd be a welcome message (with nice link to log in!), some sort of introduction, and a sampling of what's going on in The Dream. For the logged in user... whatever they want to have showing! Or just a generic list of forums, if you're so inclined.

Less tie-in to the comic - While the general concept works wonders for allowing all sorts of role-play here, concepts like Avatars (normally the graphics alongside your post) and Player Gods can confuse people. Though normally the word "Player" keys people in on what a PG is.

??? - Your ideas here! The Dream's been the welcoming recipient of your content so far, so why not lend a few ideas on where we can improve. It is the point of this thread!

Profit! - I couldn't resist adding it after that last entry, could I? Seriously, though, if you have any ideas for simple things that you might be willing to help cover the expenses of the site for a marginal fee.. let us know!

Okay, I'll bite, but mainly to talk about the flipside. Overall, I like the site the way it is now. Some of the potential improvements that have been discussed recently would be the opposite of improvements to me.

I'm on dialup, and will be for the foreseeable future (that is, unless broadband suddenly becomes dirt cheap--I pay $11 a month for Internet). Therefore, I want nothing that substantially increases the download time of pages on the site.

I already block flash and javascript most everywhere (any kind of active content that are bandwidth hogs on most sites), so, I do not want the overall site to require those.

I do not want to have to log in to view the forums. Generally speaking, the only time I log in is when I'm going to post.

The 'hide signatures' button is a keeper feature.

The things I would like to see added--would cost money, probably on a continuing basis. So, they're not needed.

[Edit 12/17/08]
Okay, I've thought of a feature that should be relatively easy to implement:

I regularly use the 24- and 48-hour search pages to check my threads for new posts. However, some posters insist on giving their posts a new title every single time they post. Makes it difficult to keep track of my threads via the search pages.

So, if you could add a feature like: whenever the title of a post that meets the search condition does not match the title of the first post in a thread, include the original thread title in the search result.

something like:

Blah Blah Blah in thread Yakkity Smakkity

--------------------
P.S. - The bird bites.

Ichak:

Thanks! That's the kind of information I'm looking for, both the improvements and the "don't change this!" stuff. I intend to keep any javascript and flash optional, though some things I admit may be easier/prettier with it on.

As a side-note, I run an add-on called "noscript" for firefox, which lets me selectively allow certain pages to run scripts. Just something I've found handy, as it also goes through and nukes as many kinds of active content as it can too, unless asked otherwise.

Ichak reminded me of one issue I've also had related to the thread/post names. I've never liked the fact that the thread title and the first post title are identical. To me those are two separate things.

I'd like the default for the thread title to match the first post title, but with an option to make the thread title different.

The thread title should be included in any indexing displays.

Thread Options Palette (Post Size, HTML, Override) new
      #641666 - Tue Jan 27 2009 02:07 PM

Thread Options Palette
When initiating a thread, it would be nice for the GM to have some preset options (a Thread Options Palette) to limit post size and HTML.

Examples:

Size Limit Options
[ ] Quip [ ] Paragraph [ ] Page [ ] "Unlimited"

[ ] Allow Overrides

HTML
[ ] Full HTML [ ] Images [ ] Formatted Text/Links [ ] Text Only

[ ] Allow Overrides

* * * * *
If you are running a Contest thread where the challenge is to come up with some response that is intended to be the length of a "Quip" (a few sentences), a coded structure could help enforce that.

You might want to keep an Adventure fast-paced and trim and insist that all responses be about the length of a fat paragraph.

I feel that nobody wants to read a post longer than a page (8 1/2 x 11 page of writing), and that should be the default limit.

"Unlimited" is never totally unlimited (chat captures often bust the post), but this is the current default we have now and I think it can too often encourage verbosity.

HTML options are fairly self explanatory. We allow full HTML on all threads. But someone might want to limit to just Images but no other HTML. Or just formatted text and no images. Or if the RP is mainly being done via cellphone, etc. limit it to plain text.

Even given these restrictions, there should be an "Allow Overrides" option. That way if the GM wants very long detailed posts for one particular round they can allow players to override the general thread restriction for a certain posting period.

The post edit box should always have a counter showing how many characters you have used and how many are remaining.

My Ideal dream is a very simple and humble one.

One that will be here long after they put me in the ground.

As for Costs - ...Hmm, Well, I have some ideas - but give me a few days ot let them germinate a bit.

What Rayner said. Keep things simple and humble. If TheDream gets too complicated, it will scare away people and frustrate current users.

I would be sincerely sad if we tried to forget the comic and steer the forum away from it. While I know there is no active comic, shying away from it altogether and trying to keep the forum away from it is like setting fire to the foundation of MZDM as a whole. Instead of staying away from the comic, you should embrace the idea. Extract Master Zen Dao Meow and make him an even more active icon, make the Dream Directives the pillars, give them a bigger purpose or enhance their current purpose. He (and the supporting cast) doesn't have to be part of the actual comic to be part of MZDM; he doesn't have to involve himself in a whole new comic to involve himself with the basis of the forum. But at the same time don't forget that the comic started everything. Trying to inevitably rip the art and comic from the forum is going to end in chaos, so instead put the old stuff in a bigger, better museum and dust it off once in a while, then find a way to use it without using the art - without using the comic or the PA cards. Yes, this is written to a point that it probably wont make sense and it may be a little complicated, but it really isn't. More Zen Dao, more Val, more Quacky, more Mu, have them explain the site to new members on the front page, if possible have them show up in threads or adventures. Give them a more active life, dust them off and give them more of a purpose, shower them over the forum like water on a dying plant, detach them from 'being above everyone else' and give them a deeper story In the forums. Make characters (or bring back characters) that may have known them in the past and involve them as well. Where's the thread where Pigham looses his cookies and needs both a detective thread to find them again as well as a visit to Neema's Settle thread to help him make more temporarily to satiate the hungry populace?

As for making more funds for the site, shake off a few fleas at art forums. This may sound insane, but Fur Affinity and Deviant Art both have large open areas for new banners for advertising other sites and it's not a very large (or expensive) step to have a huge logo of Master with the large words "ROLEPLAY FORUM" in one of those spaces. It's a small loss of money and a backwards step, but it will go a long way to getting new members. New members means more people to fund the site (and/or sell mzdm t-shirts and hats). While you advertise MZDM on other major sites, have a large 'Please help keep MZDM alive' thread or notice somewhere (and not hiding at the bottom for people to ignore) asking people to help with funds.

Instead of a new layout for the site, I'd like to see (in my dream Dream) more open activities. There are 10,000 mods on this site, where are the 10,000 large poetry, adventure, comedy, mystery, and problem solving threads? The only activities I can openly see as a new user are those involved with the chat (which is not the forum) and the Haiku C., which is unapproachable. Does this sound fair? It isn't! It was brilliant when Furil made the Graveyard thread in Enter to involve members, where are more from other major members of the forum? Why aren't these threads featured on the front page to show that MZDM is, indeed, active and booming? Sitting and watching the forum, expecting the members to move it, isn't going to make it move fast enough to appeal to everyone. This place needs a gravitational focal point, a few specific choice threads that glow, made by those who run it to get people's attention that yes, this place isn't going downhill. You, Krinele, and you, Benor, and you MasterFlare, where are your huge threads that involve the members, where are your huge activities?

I've lectured myself out. *gets off the podium*

Ideal... Dream.
  • A real-time chat system with room creation capabilities. A 3D-type environment could be nice, with customizable elements such as your avatar (as in, how your character looks in that chat world) or the backgrounds. Of course, utilizing imagination in a text-based chat is just fine as well ^^.
  • A single thread accessible from any person's profile (individual) that acts as their home thread and person interactivity area. This is extremely similar to what we already have, but I'm looking for more of a self-contained feeling than a link-to-SETTLE forum. Oh! Perhaps we could have a nice summary of the home/area located in the profile, linking to the SETTLE thread!
  • Tabbed profile, consistent with above list item.
  • Rewards. Rewards brought such attention to this site. They need to return in some form or fashion. Art is commonly accepted, as are special privileges. Access to the FIGHT forum perhaps? Sneak peek at behind-the-scenes? Could even charge a monthly fee for certain privileges, depending on how desirable they are. Hey! Image storage! 3D chat access. Guaranteed PA status for donations over a certain amount. Just tossing out ideas here.
  • Better servers. Archiving old threads helped immensely, but the servers are just NOT up to snuff. We want traffic? We need to handle the traffic.
  • Avatar images. I refer, of course, to the little 100x100 images that you see on other message boards directly under people's names, usually on the left. Make it a paid-only feature and only character art approved by staff. You could not limit it, but I've seen some pretty... adult-oriented, crude, and offensive avatar images out there, so be careful about going with the latter option.
  • AMS (Avatar Management System). Easy Poster is on a back burner right now as the forums are going through this hefty change. I'm not in the mood to make something that will probably need to be modified anyhow. I want to work with a finished product, not a work-in-progress working off of a work-in-progress. Those can get pretty messy >.>
  • Enable a few more capabilities with the profiles. Allow us a bit of java scripting and/or various other coding formats that will allow us far more intuitive and fun profiles. Paid option? Maybe! Heck, I've wanted a mouse-over drop-down/pop-up text for quite a while that is capable of more than just a single sentence of text.
  • Raffles! A way to bring in money. This would probably be more of a late-game type of contest. Prizes can be art or perhaps a year's worth of extra access (if going with the charge-a-month-for-extra-features idea).
  • Going with the previous example, contests! Just fun little games where the winner earns themselves something tangible, like a t-shirt from a previous con, or a cap, or even an actual PA card of themselves (assuming they are PA's).
  • Flash or DHTML. I like drag-and-drop, what can I say? Saveable viewing formats would be nice, along with a plain version of the Dream for those with slower connections (do people still use dial-up these days?).
  • Saved drafts! OMG, please!!! How many people have seen their posts simply go bye-bye because their computers don't save drafts. Auto-save features for those drafts on a 1-minute interval. Computer goes blitz, no worries. Only lost up to a minute's worth of typing. I have quit threads (RPs and non) because of this.
  • Beta-testing opportunities. Again, could be one of those paid-only features, but it would be nice to test things as they're on their way out and report back to a very, VERY overworked programmer so that he doesn't have nearly as much work to do locating bugs (I'm looking at you Krin!).

That's... all I can think of right now. I'm sure I'll add more. Look for ninja edits!
