Lesson 3

"O Can-ah-da! Something something soooomething"

The national anthem of Canada, I must admit, is not a song to which I know the words. However since I am not Canadian, I am proud that I knew that much of it, which is about 100% more than the majority of my fellow countrymen (and women) know.

This week's lesson is about the culture and land of Canada. It is presented by C'mot Dribbler, with the help of other Canadians, who seeks to enlighten the rest of the world as to the actual nature of that land and it's inhabitants.

A noble gesture and of great educational value as well, so without further adieu, this week's lesson is "Have any Canadian language or culture questions? "

( In recognition of Canada's Laws )

"O Can-ah-da ! Quelque chose quelque chose quelque choooose "

Well, well, well...Here in the LEARN section of the Napping Cat’s Dream we’ve had 26 Official Lessons. (with the occasional odd one mixed in with them.) However it’s time for your pop quiz. Yes, I said pop quiz, so report immediately to this week’s featured thread, Father Magus’s Napping Cat’s Mensa and put your brain to the test. The mind benders and mental workout his group and he are providing are more mentally exercising than any quiz. Oh yes, there is no curve, and no grade, best of luck!

It's a holiday known by many names, All Hallow's Eve, Los Dias de los Muertos, Pamona Day, or even Samhain, No matter what you call it, Halloween has come to be known as a traditional day of celebration and costume wearing in various parts of the world.
This week's featured lesson of the week is the discussion following Noelle's timely and fitting question. "What will you be wearing? BwaHahahaa!"
So my little ghouls and goblins, think carefully and bring your advice and commentary to this week's featured thread, and oh yes, don't forget your treat!

From the past is the future made, and by knowing the past might we see what lies ahead. In this week's featured lesson History of the Dream, Exie has asked for help in finding out the Dream's past. So far such avatars as Maus Merryjest, Zoe Summers, Icefox, and more have given memories and information. You are cordially invited to do the same in the featured lesson this week.

Learning Lessons #30 (it's the BIG 3-OH!!) new
      #415228 - Mon Nov 10 2003 05:25 PM

Let's see, today I discovered that if one accidentally turns on the burner of a glass top stove under an empty piece of pyrex cookware the resulting blast of broken glass and shards is quite spectacular. I have been cooking for several decades as well, which doesn't allow me to use novicehood as an excuse, at least no one was hurt and I was merely startled.
Now imagine the thrill of a beginning cook, limited to a microwave and a coffee maker by the laws of an over protective college or university. What delicacies can you dream up? I myself was a master of the Cup o' Soup, you know, the kind that is poured from the packet into hot water? Fortunately there's much more out there than that, and it's being discussed and recipes exchanged in this week's featured lesson. Everybody loves Ramen: The NCD Guide to Cheap n' Easy Dorm Cooking gm'd by Vedas.
Now I have to head back to picking glass shards out of my socks....

Safety first! That's what I say!
And it is always a good rule everyday!

Especially when one considers the ramifications of conducting experiments in the home. This week's featured lesson is presented by Phoex, whose firey nature even refers to lightning in the microwave!

I myself do not really think that one is a good idea, (having long ago, and early on in the microwave era, seen a microwave die in brilliant glory due to an attempt to heat up barbqued chicken, still in the aluminum foil,) but he has provided an interesting thread to share your ideas for home experimentation to expand one's understanding of science. Something I am sure a certain lab rat would agree with me on endorsing.

So without further adieu, here's this week's lesson
Neat Science experiments, in your own home!

Enjoy and keep in mind neither I nor the NCD are liable for whatever dangers you might entertain as a result of this thread. Please, be safe and don't blow anything up.....

Learning Lessons #32 new
      #425262 - Fri Dec 05 2003 08:49 PM

Dr. Emmit Brown, that wise fantasimicfilmological scientist said that once he had mastered temporal displacement physics he planned on devoting to solving the ultimate male mystery, that of women. Sha Dao Shi has decided to continue in that research and open the floor to studies of the equally baffling subject for women, of men.

It could be argued that it all boils down to genetics, but in this instance you may ask your questions (keep it clean folks) and possibly have them answered by that mysterious opposite gender.

Oh yes, Aldric, the answer to all three questions is easy, we're all weird...

Check out the happenings for yourself in this week's featured lesson thread Why do girls go to the bathroom in groups and guys sag their pants?

Learning Lessons #33 new
      #431537 - Mon Dec 22 2003 01:50 PM

'Tis the season to be stressed out!
Fa La La la la la la la lah!

Ah the joys of growing older, bills, arthritis, hair loss, and so much more, but prior to these comes the rather large hurdle of "what am I going to do with the rest of my life?"

Not so long ago this wasn't a stressful choice as someone else had made it for you, but today's society allows some freedom of choice in these matters, and Lisa V is looking for help in the matter of college life.

Is it really that bad?
Do roommates do strange things to you in your sleep?
Did Nostrodamus really predict that your freshman dorm would experiecne a mass slaughter with you there?

Well maybe she isn't exactly worried about all of these, but there is concern with college and what comes after high school. Join the likes of Lachesis, Tamar, Karol Luis, Nullcast & Whatsis, Levantine, HaXor, 3l3ctrophr34k, STrRedWolf, and Keijya Cherok, who have already presented their views, and bring your experiences to this week's featured lesson.

Is college as fatal as everyone says, or is it worse?

The end of the year is a time to be reflective and consider what one has done and will do.
This week's featured lesson asks us to ponder a lack of disabled avatars in the Dream.
Aldric-Eoml-Treschi wonders why this is so and seeks input from fellow Dreamers.

I myself am temperatly challenged but I don't think that's what he's thinking of.

Find out more in this week's featured lesson:
Playing with a Disabled Character.

And for those that mark time this way, Happy New Year!

On the more interesting aspects of fantasy,
is the development of anatomy.

What goes where, what does it do?
Is this the proper place for this on you???

Perhaps you really didn't think too much about it,
or you gave it such consideration it gave you a fit.

Either way, this week's featured lesson might catch your fancy,
it's STrRedWolf's Napping Cat Avatar Anatomy!

This week the lesson picked is not one, but two!
Both of which can have a direct impact on you.
You see the threads are from our own Furilius Pitch,
and these have nothing to do with a scheme to make him rich.
But they do have an impact on the Dream,
one to make corrections, and the other to help make things as they should seem.

So now without further delay,
the featured lessons are right this way:

The Profile, our own little way of showing who our characters are.
In recent weeks a challenge was made to improve our profiles,
and many rose to this challenge with fantastic results.
Now that the challenge is over, many secrets are being shared.
If you're curious as to how to do certain tricks and enhancements, check out this week's featured lesson.

Ah, identity, who are you?
Are you not you?
There are some that accuse others of that. It's true!
Now prove you are you, here's what to do,
visit this week's featured lesson thread,
and get that false assumption out of everyone's head.

This time of year one's thoughts are supposed to turn to those of love,
and giving gifts to that love.
Usually those gifts are of chocolate or flowers, but sometimes the gifts are stuffed animals.
But what if you were one of the stuffed animals???
What would you eat?
Would you need to eat?

To find the answers to these questions and discuss many more, join the theoretical pondering in this week's Learning Lesson: So you've been transformed into a Plushie? [A Guide to being Plush] by Rei Akukami

Rusti Ander has called for help in unraveling the mystery of Dream History, and he seeks the aid of those that lived it.

"Winken, Blinken, and Nod one night
Sailed off in a wooden shoe --
Sailed off on a river of crystal light,
Into a sea of dew...."

That's the way the poem starts, and in it's words are some good advice,
if you follow the line just right.
For there are dangers that might await you, if you fail to find the sea of dew.
Just what the heck am I talking about?
Well check out this week's featured lesson, FYI: Bell's Palsy posted by Forrest to find out.

"When I was a child I spoke as a child I understood as a child I thought as a child; but when I became a man I put away childish things."

Well, I haven't, and I'm certainlly well into what can be labelled adulthood (seems like I'm past it some days.) Kashna has become concerned with the effects of aging on Role Playing and seeking information from the "old" gamers that abound around to the Dream to post their take on the validity of adults playing games. So "Old" folks, post your knowledge, and "youngsters" read up, because if you're lucky, (or is that unlucky?) you'll be old like us one day too!

Space, the final frontier. These are the continuing voyages of the starship....
Hey wait a minute, we don't have a starship...yet.

Now that's the very problem being tackled in this week's Learning Lesson,
Starship Designs: Concepts I've been tinkering with

What will make it go? What will hold it together? How the heck do we get it so people can stand rather than float?

Perhaps you have the answers in your mind, come join the others that have already shared theirs. Who knows, you might be the one that finally gives humanity the stars!

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
Following that ancient advice to become a Psychedelic Avatar, you must first become an Avatar.
To get one started on that first step, Amethyst is seeking advice on creating an avatar in What makes a Good Avatar?

Then after you accomplish thatfirst step you can move on to seeking PA-hood, Julius Cage has asked for what the voters seek in the second half of our Learning Lessons Double Feature, A Poll on the "PA Factor"

So help the newcomers and those seeking growth on their path and add your contributions to our knowledge seekers today!

A great group of lyrical poets from Austraila, Young, Young, Johnson, Albert & Son, once composed the very apt words, "Who made who, who made you?
Who made who, ain't nobody told you?
Who made who, who made you?
If you made them and they made you
Who picked up the glue, and who made who?"

Now in this week's Featured Learning Lesson asks that same question in a different way.
Re's curious about who is who and asks such in "Who are your Alts?"
Many have posted and you might get a surprise to see exactly "who made who."

Alright, I admit it freely...I dislike Windows based systems.
One of the reasons for that dislike is the many stupid openings that enable alterations to be made to one's computer by outside forces.

One of the worst of these is what is deemed as a "Hijacker." It is a nasty little program that likes to take over your browser and bring you to whatever site the evil creator of the program feels like pushing that day.

I'm not the only one that doesn't care for these things, Zell's fed up and calling all hands on deck to repel the invasion of his hard drive, in this week's featured Learning Lesson, "Getting this stuff OFF my hard drive!!"

So you can drop by and add your advice to the battle, or perhaps find a successful method to eliminate the scourge of your browser.
(...and everyone wonders why I love my Mac....)

Ah, one of the greats put it this way,
"And now, the end is near;
And so I face the final curtain.
My friend, I’ll say it clear,
I’ll state my case, of which I’m certain.

I’ve lived a life that’s full.
I’ve traveled each and ev’ry highway;
And more, much more than this,
I did it my way."

Those words, sung by the great Frank Sinatra, and written by Paul Anka, refer to the ultimate deadline we all face.

But just where the heck did the word "deadline" come from anyways?
In this week's Learning Lesson,
Origin of "deadline"?
Krinele Fullin seeks the answer.

So far such learned scholars as Klondike, and Pendelton P. Pomeroy, have attempted to present possible answers. And then there's the brilliant deductive presentation of Snarf Sauk in regards to the potential origin....but I'll let you judge that for yourself. It's all in there, I promise, now I'm off to sing and dance happily as I finished my latest effort with 38 hours to go before the deadline. See y'all next time!

I can't believe I missed it!
It was the First Year Anniversary of the Learning Lessons and it slipped right by me.

I personally blame my old nemesis, the heat. It's been annoyingly hot around here of late. Why there's even liquid water lying around, I don't think I can take much more. It's ABSOLUTEly unbearable.

And speaking of Absolute Heat, that takes us to this week's Learning Lesson. Our own version of Casey Jones, Don M. has begun to ponder about the heat. Since there's the blessed comfort of absolute zero, might there be an opposite of absolute heat?

Join the theoretical ponderings and help us solve this little universal tidbit in this week's Learning Lesson, "Is there an 'Absolute' Maximum temperature?"

While you do that, I'll be sitting over here in the freezer getting comfortable while consuming a toasted form of blended barley and hopps in fluid post-fermentation form at a temperature right above water's tripoint.
