Computer for Grandma
      #635832 - Sun May 25 2008 10:15 PM

I've finally dredged out an XP license key and installed Windows on Grandma's christmas present (Macular Degeneration so possible support for 3rd party magnifier software has to be kept in mind so no gOS or Ubuntu here). I've also installed apps from the Google Pak (including Firefox and Star Office). As well as other bits and pieces of software. Right now I'm looking for suggestions on how I should configure this.

Should I have the taskbar wide with the Taskbar Magnifier powertoy running in it to make better use of screen real-estate than the basic windows magnifier?

Should I put links to things like Google Maps on the desktop, and should I run online apps in Firefox with all the chrome or should I get fancy and use Prism?

I'm thinking I should pull all the distracting extra programs and settings into an "Advanced" sub-menu of Programs folder.

Should I giant-size the Windows fonts, or does that run too much a risk of breaking the user-interface of badly coded programs to be worth the risk?

What software does she need?

Does Windows have any equivalent of "Hold down the control key and mouse-scroll up to zoom screen in, scroll down to zoom out"? That might be good to enable if it's available.
