Problem with Windows XP x64 and some drivers/devices

I recently acquired a new PC, because my old one was slowing down when I was drawing in big files.
And it was a good idea, because my old one suddenly died.
Now my brother set the PC up and because it has pretty good parts in it, the normal Windows XP didn't work. He had to use Windows XP x64.
Now the problem is, I can get neither Scanner nor Wacom Tablet working. And that was my main reason for getting the thing
When I tried to install my scanner (CanoScan LiDE 50) it recognizes it when I plug it in (USB), but can't find drivers even though I installed the driver with the CD that comes with it.
I also installed drivers from the Manufactorers homepage (or at least tried to... I get an .exe file that does something, but so fast I dunno what (unzips something I'd guess) but doesn't do anything else.
And some other driver always wants to uninstall my Scanner whenever I start it.
The Wacom was even worse. After installation all seemed fine, but when I exited the setup program my computer froze up (seemed working but not even the tast manager had a higher priority.)
And since the Tablet was in start up now every time my PC started up, it was locked as well (I got an hourglass-cursor whenever hovering over the lower bar or the tast manager window)
I was able to start in safe mode and to uninstall the driver though. Now everything seems back to normal.
I ran hijackthis and didn't found any entries of the two programs in my registry (from what I could see).

Does anyone have experiences with Windows XP x64? I was told drivers for normal windows XP and windows XP x64 should work on both.

While I'm not an x64 user myself, I've read and heard almost uniformly that "standard" XP (32-bit) and 64-bit drivers are entirely different, and not interchangeable. A 32-bit driver, as supplied with your devices, won't work on x64, and vice versa - an x64 driver downloaded from the internet will not load correctly on standard 32-bit Windows. A 64-bit Vista driver might work on XP x64 in some cases, though. I'm not speaking from experience here, I have never tried. But the conclusion would be logical, considering that Vista 32-bit sometimes accepts regular XP drivers.
It's most likely that, in order to get your scanner to work, you'll have to uninstall the probably partially installed 32-bit driver before you can install the correct x64 version. The driver might have been unzipped to some temp directory, maybe you could point Windows' hardware assistant to it if you find out where it went.
As far as the Canon scanner goes, some people claim that the driver for the "LiDE 60" might work, if you speak German, see this discussuion:
http://www.winhelpline.info/forum/treiber-windows-vista/145798-suche-treiber-fue r-canon-lide50.html
However, please keep in mind that this is about Vista x64, not XP x64. Trying out the suggestions made there probably won't do any harm, though. It seems to me that there is no official 64-bit release from Canon, which is a shame, as the scanner apparently isn't _that_ old.
I don't know what Wacom you have, but I guess your chances with that are siginficantly better than with the scanner. Compared to Canon, Wacom has a remarkably long support period, and this blog entry looks promising:

You were right. The Wacom works again. Scanner is still out though.
Haven't tried your link yet though. Perhaps tomorrow.
Thank you for the links!

You might download the demo version of Vuescan. While the program itself costs money for a full version, and has a somewhat obtuse user interface, the generic USB scanner driver it installs might fix a problem or two getting unsupported scanners working with their own software, even with just the free version.
