And Back To The Plot new
      #328326 - Mon Feb 24 2003 03:42 AM

I was, to say the least, VERY impressed with chapter 13 and how well the music and voices matched with the characters... but now the story starts up again, bringing up some questions.

Did Val leave the pendant at home? My guess is no, as it would make things too easy.

I think it dosen't matter where it is. Manchia is at home.
However I suspect the pendant is with Val.

On the more philosophical side, I'm actually a little proud of Zen-Dao. Instead of keeping the affair with Val as a dirty secret or simply eloping, he wants to get things out in the open with Manchia, so that Val can (if she chooses) make a clean break. I honestly didn't expect such an honest course of action. This must mean that he really cares for Val.

I agree that Zen Dao is handling the situation quite well, but by the look on Val's face, it seems that she's not quite so serious as he might be about making a clean break. The fact that the mention of Manchia's name upsets her might mean that her relationship with Zen Dao wasn't entirely serious, and that she thought of it as a sort of escape, a little trip on the wild side or something of the like. Something about her distressed reaction makes me think she's a bit hesitant about the whole thing.

It is possible that Val is more concerned about what Manchia's reaction may be. After all...being married to him ought to have taught her a lot about his personality...and temper?

Or she might think a clean break will be to just go without giving Manchia any warning. So she could want it just like Zen-Dao does, but with a different definition.

We shouldn't speculate Val's motives too much in this point of storyline. She may be what she seems, but remember what happened last time Zen Dao assumed this? The circumstances are much different but Dancing Yin is known to be intelligent and tricky...

I believe this storyline will still get an unexpected twist in it before all is over...

Uh-oh. Zen-Dao and Val are splitting up and plan to meet later... That is never a good thing, when meetings are so easily prevented, or rigged. Either way, with Black back on track, I think that Val going anywhere alone may not be a good idea, at least not until she's had a chance to fully realize her powers.

Then again, that leads to a whole new possible outcome: She becomes fully the goddess and ascends to a highter level, leaving Zen-Dao to eat her metaphysical dust whether she means to or not.

Plot? Who wants plot? I say they go back to Cruiser's Cloud and spend the rest of the strip singin' and dancin'.

I can't help but think this "bringing things out into the light" thing isn't quite as honest and straightforward as it seems... don't forget, Zen-Dao and Manchia were rivals... Zen taking Manchia's wife would definitely be a slap in the old rival's face, ya know?

That's a good point, Reteo. And that's probably why Val wants to do it alone....this will be hostile enough without Zen Dao to irritate Manchia further.

::Hearing what the others say, Sovan strokes his chin and hums thoughtfully:: "I agree with what Reteo and Benor say--being old enemies from school, sparks would probably fly between Zen-Dao and Manchia when it's revealed that Zen-Dao and Val are officially an item. And not just for the reasons in this Dream--as it was revealed in the comic, Manchia is working for Elroar, and is trying to put Val under his influence for some reason. I doubt he'd be too pleased with this new complication of matters. For this reason, there is a certain wisdom in Val's choosing to handle this solo."

::The Star Dragon pauses:: "However, as Zephaera pointed out, there are SO many ways that this could turn out bad." (Ticks off the possibilities on his fingers) "Manchia could do something desparate to keep Val with him, Mr. Black could catch up with her en route to Manchia's or shortly after she got there, Zen-Dao could wind up being delayed somehow..." (Shakes his head) "Sheesh, it makes me wince just thinking about it!" (Brightens slightly) "Well, at least Val has more access to her Dancing Yin powers--that should even the odds a bit. Still, anything could happen before this is all over."

::Sovan pauses as a thought occurs to him, and his expression becomes sad:: "I don't deny that the idea of Val and Zen-Dao being a couple is an appealing thing, and it would probably go fairly well. But one can't help but feel sorry for Wendy, who's a very nice person and has been interested in Zen-Dao for some time now--Hollis himself pointed that out." (Shakes his head and sighs wearily) "Poor lady. Sooner or later, she's going to learn about these new developments...and it's not going to be a pleasant experience."

Heh. It looks like Pigham is about to cause what Furilius is predicting....

And speaking of Wendy, I'm wondering how she's faring as well. She certainly seems to have an idea of what's happening, and I wouldn't be surprised if she gets involved again. I certainly hope she does, at least; Wendy's too interesting a character to simply leave out.

Geez, more menacing people operating in the shadows than you can shake a stick at. Furilius looks almost too happy about that traumatic labor inducing comment. I allege perhaps he's not simply a business orienteted fox here, but I wouldn't doubt something very complex rides with him. While he and Pigham share a few qualities as operating business men, Pigham seems more calm minded about most of his practices. Are we perhaps seeing a dark side to the fox?

I don't think it would be a good idea, Cruiser. There is an expression that goes roughly "too much of a good thing", and after a while, the singing and dancing would lose its appeal.

I'd say that to him the whole thing is simply business that he's determined to make succesful. If it means that one person gets traumatic experiences, so be it - a sacrifice for further profit and even better, a sacrifice that he, Furilius, does not have to personally make.

He seems to be more enthusiatic about coming success than of means of getting it.

On a completely pointless tangent, I'm not surprised that a professional like Furilius would have a headset phone.

I too pity poor miss Wendy, even more now that I know what means to be in her place. I don't listen to pop that much, but Miss Wendy's predicament reminds me of Lisa Loeb's song, "Underdog".

Then again, Val does need Zen Dao at this point, if only to make her break from Manchia's manipulative paws *grumbles something about certain tigers giving the species a bad name*

So the question is, when the dust settles, who will be left behind? Furilius and Pigham are posing themselves as midwives to the Dancing Yin's birth, and that can lead to many chaotic events- the Yin is unpredictable and we do not know if she will behave the same way towards Zen Dao as Val has... for all we know, she may not need him anymore. What I have always admired of the Dancing Yin is her independence. Once she comes into her full power and takes flight, what will happen? Remember, The Dancing Yin is a spirit of Vengeance.

There is definitively much karma between Zen Dao and the two ladies... although I have noticed that up to this point the two have not interacted directly. I wonder what would happen should Val and Wendy meet?

And then there is always the question: Why, Val, do you stare at the pendant so for hours? Perhaps waiting it to start spinning? Will it start spinning now, I wonder?

And miss Wendy, we are indeed kindred spirits in our position.

And Furilius... does he see us as nothing more than cards in his ultimate business deal? Hmm.

I wonder what Marija Gimbutas would have thought of our current storyline.

::Sovan hums thoughtfully as he hears the comments of the others, Maus' in particular. Once he's done, the golden-furred one speaks up again:: "Well, I agree that when the Dancing Yin awakens, Val's going to be out for anyone who might have been using or hurting her--so it's a sure bet that Mr. Black and Pigham are going down hard." (A grim smirk crosses his face) "Granted, they both deserve it." (Thinks for a moment) "As for Manchia, it's harder to say--if the Dancing Yin is aware of how her former husband was trying to manipulate her, then he's probably in for some high-level punishment himself. Furlius? Well, no one other than Pigham and Mr. Black know he's even involved at this point, so I think he's off the hook for the time being." (Pauses) "As for Zen-Dao, well...it's really hard to say. Zen-Dao seems to genuinely care for Val, and her alter-ego might be willing to treat him with kindness due to that. But in the end, only time will tell."

::After a moment's silence, the Star Dragon snaps his fingers as he remembers something else that Maus mentioned:: "In regard to Val and Wendy, I wouldn't be surprised if the two wind up meeting before the story is over--heaven knows that it's going to be inevitable if Zen-Dao and Val are a couple. When that happens..." (Winces) "Well, I think three good words would be 'duck and cover.' Odds are that at least one person is going to have hurt feelings...and it's a good bet that Wendy's going to be that someone..." (Shakes his head sadly) "Poor lady. I feel sorry for you, Wendy."

::With a sigh, Sovan folds his arms over his chest and looks at the sky in contemplation:: (Out loud) "I wonder what Manchia's got planned? And while I'm at it, how about his boss, ElRoar?"

*Maus smiles at Sovan's comments and pats his shoulder* Well, like I said, I wouldn't trust Manchia as far as I could throw him, and he's such a delicious cat. *he chuckles* Elroar and Manchia seem to have a similar purpose to Pigham's, they all seem to be after the goddess. The question I think is: What makes them think that they can control her? Pigham is a greedy fool who often bites down on more than he can chew- Manchia is not such a fool. I would be weary of whatever those two megalomaniacs, Manchia and ElRoar, have up their sleeves. Yes sir.

Tyger! Tyger! burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?

In what distant deeps or skies
Burnt the fire of thine eyes?
On what wings dare he aspire?
What the hand dare seize the fire?
--William Blake

I thought that this bit of poetry would be appropriate just now. Though I only put the first two stanzas here, the rest of the poem also fits Manchia rather well. I deeply pity those apes, as it looks to me like they are about to be subjected to a very special welcome from Manchia. Oh, and you do realize that he probably heard every word that they said from the time that they entered the house?

A silenced revolver?
      #328354 - Fri Mar 07 2003 05:48 AM

Ho-hum.....

Just pointing out a little technicality here but revolvers are generally not the best weapons to put a silencer on. Because there's a gap between the cylinder and the barrel, supersonic gas escapes there so the bang sounds almost just as loud as without a silencer. All the silencer would do is slow the bullet to subsonic speeds, thereby reducing the effectiveness of the gun.

As far as I know one revolver was made that could be silenced, the M95 Nagant Gas Seal, and that was more an excercise in perverse engineering than a practical firearm (Trigger pull of over 20 lbs)
Amusingly enough the Russians did adopt this revolver as their standard sidearm.
