Anycity - Ceera's 'White Temple'

Close to downtown Anycity, South across the river from the main part of downtown, there is an area known as the Temple District. The area, as one might guess, has many temples in it, devoted to the many and diverse deities of The Dream. Some are large, gaudy and pretentious, while others are humble and serene. The white temple of Ceera Darkwynde is a quiet and beautiful place, which does little to draw attention to itself. It is enclosed by walls deeply carved with scenes from dreams of various types. Spaced along the tops of the wall and atop marble pillars within the area are brass fire bowls that burn with golden flames. These fires illuminate the area softly at night, and give the grounds a dreamlike, almost unreal quality. Within the walls, winding paths lead past small enclosed bowers, private places of meditation and rest, where an individual might sleep, dream, and reflect upon their dreams. Tall hedges of flowering plants form a maze that offers further privacy to those who walk these circuitous ways. At many places throughout the ground are exquisitely beautiful statues, most of which appear to be made from various types of obsidian, with details that are unbelieveably fine and life-like.

In the center of the grounds is a modest temple, a structure larger than the rest, built of white marble. The central figure in the main room of the temple itself is a white marble statue of a winged woman, almost angelic in appearance, flanked by fire bowls that again burn with golden flames. The is a representation of the Goddess Ceera Darkwynde, captured in one of her most positive aspects. To one side of this central hall is a library, whose main resources are books and scrolls on dream interpretation and divination. To the other, on the right as one enters, are several doors that lead to rooms in which the priestesses, priests, and acolytes of the temple are trained. Several other structures behind the temple offer dormitories and other facilities for those who serve and study here.

Men and women dressed in short Chitons and Grecian sandals move purposefully about, greeting worshipers and scholars, and attending to their duties in maintaining the temple and its grounds. Ceera's white temple has a reputation as being a good place to seek guidance when one is troubled by dreams or nightmares. The priestesses and priests of the temple are called Dreamwalkers, and are trained in the arts of entering, manipulating and invoking or dispelling dreams. They are also said to be skilled at divination, at forecasting possible future events or fortelling what is happening at great distances. A lesser number of the temple staff are skilled in pyromancy - fire magic.

Today there seems to be more activity than usual, as rumor has it that the Goddess herself is soon to arrive. While it is not unusual for Ceera to appear when celebrants worship at the night-time ceremonies here, or when supplicants come here to seek her aid or guidance, this time it is rumored that she will do something which she has never done before in the history of the Temple. She has agreed to take a personal interest in the training and education of several students - people who will learn, directly from the Goddess herself, the ways of oneromancy and pyromancy. Word has quietly spread that those who wish to learn magic, and most especially those magical arts related to dreams or to fire, may present themselves to the Goddess. If she is willing, they may, for such time as she deems fit, study with her and serve her. Not all will be accepted, but for a lucky few it could be the chance of a lifetime.

Some arrive with special invitations, and their acceptance is assured. These few are already in her Service. But others may apply as well...

OOC: This is, for now, an open thread - a 'school of magic' in which Ceera will be the principal teacher. If you wish to learn, enter the thread when it is marked 'open', and present yourself at the temple. When I have as many students as I can manage, I will close the thread to new students. It may thereafter re-open from time to time, as students drop out or graduate, opening new spaces.

This is not to be confused with that other 'school of witchcraft and wizardry', made popular in certain children's books. It is not a light-hearted boarding school for would-be pre-teen spell casters. Some will come here with much potential, but little training. Others may be fully trained in their own disciplines, but seeking to expand their knowledge of pyromancy or oneromancy. All who come here will be expected, to some degree, to apprentice themselves to Ceera Darkwynde, entering her Service and obeying her commands for the duration of their service - until she or they determine that their studies should end. If it works out well, and if other suitable Avatars are willing to join in, I may also accept applications from instructors, with other magical specialties. We shall see.

The doors are open, and certain invitations have been sent. Who shall be bold enough to apply?

Up to the gates walks a somewhat dirty and cloaked man, a familier tail tip peeking from below it's edges. Rough and shoddy as he looks, should anyone glimpse his face it has been quite hardened, but is recognizeable as Keverin. He walks up to someone whom looks as though they work here and presents his invitation. "She has called me for training, and I answer." He stands up fully now, and the cloak opens, revealing a much more muscled body, chiseled by exposure to the pure elements of nature.

On his back he wears the leather pack containing only the basics, and his prescious magic book.

Anycity - Ceera's 'White Temple'

From up the street, a vixen dressed in a white T-shirt and red gym shorts walked confidently to the temple. Upon looking at it, she felt better already. "Niiiiice..." Soy whistled, looking at the brass bowls of flame. Then she wandered up, looking for someone who didn't look too busy. Hey, there was somebody! Soy walked up to Keverin, and his attendant. Soy patted the man's rump, and suddenly ducked under his arm to stand in front of him! "EX-cuuuuse me, big guy. I promise this will only take a second." Soy lifted her right fist to the probably startled attendant's face, and out of thin air, a golden bracelet shone in her (or his) face. "This here's MY invitation. Where am I supposed to go?" Soy winked at Keverin, in a sly, conspiratory way, probably giggling, if the attendant or Keverin was suitably flustered.

"Whew! Is it just me, or is it getting HOT in here?" *Smirk.*

The young woman that Keverin approaches is a Human girl, about 18 years old, dressed, as are many of the people here, in a short white chiton edged with gold trim. Her hair is long, straight and blonde, and her skin is smooth and lightly tanned. She had been carrying a pillow and some bed sheets to one of the small buildings along the winding path. Setting the stack of bedding in the doorway of the building, she turns and looks at Keverin with clear blue eyes, then looks at his invitation.

"Welcome to our temple. I am Dianna. So, she has ..."

Just then Soy bursts in. Dianna smiles, stifling a giggle with one hand raised to her face.

"Oh! Well! Ah... Welcome to you, also miss. So, you are both favored by her already? How wonderful for you! I am Dianna, and I serve the Goddess Ceera as an Acolyte in this, her temple. Both of you should go to the main temple, and wait by the base of her statue there. The outer gardens, where we stand now, are a simple hedge maze, intended to cause visitors to take time to rest and reflect on their reasons for coming here. Many only come so far as these outer buildings, where they rest and examine their dreams, with the aid of acolytes like myself, or the dreamwalkers of the temple. It's fairly easy to get to the central temple, however. Just follow follow the fires. From any intersection, the path down which you can see the nearest burning fire bowl is the path that leads inward, to the temple. To leave, at the intersections, look downwards, at the path itself, for a symbol of the moon set into the path, and follow that route. May the peace of night be upon you. I hope you find here what your Dreams lead you to."

Keverin smiles and bows respectfully to the lady who comes to help him. He chuckles a little bit as Soy approaches and waits until the attendant is done speaking. "Thank-you Dianna. I appreciate your helpfulness, and will endevor to go through the maze as I should." he says as he bows again. He looks over to Soy with a somewhat more serious expression on his face, "Impatiance is the first way to fail in any undertaking." He waits only a moment for a response before he starts his way into the hedgemaze, trying to find the first firebowl by both sight, and listening for the burning or crackling fire.

Soy thanked the girl, and gave her a jaunty wave, before setting off after Keverin. When Keverin tossed a cliche at her, Soy winked back, and shot back a saying of her own! "Nice guys finish last. Although, just because I'm horrible at mazes, I'll let you get ahead of me, just this once." Soy grinned impudently at him, and proceeded to amuse herself by watching the bowls of golden fire dance to and fro. All of them, not just the ones that pertained to their route.

Although, Soy kept up a mostly one-way conversation with Keverin. "Say... If following the moons gets us back out... wouldn't it be faster to just follow those back to where they start? Or are they magicked? I wouldn't put it past the Mistress to test me, this early in my training." Soy made an icky-face. "You know what? That's what I'm gonna do. Next chance I'm out, and I got a day to burn, I'm gonna screw around in the maze, just to see if I'm right." Soy nodded to herself, relishing in the basic pleasure of actually being able to remember something, an ability she hadn't had until recently.

The various side trails are tempting indeed, with lovely scupptures just visible down many of these paths, just begging for a closer look. Ornamental plantings, all carefully tended by Acolites like Dianna, scent the air with relaxing fragrances, and the small bowers along the way beckon as places to pause and rest. A few of these are occupied, with solitary sleepers, or with 'couples' consisting of an older Dreamwalker with what looks like a sleeping guest. But if Keverin and Soy stick to the path indicated by the fire bowls, they get at through the maze without incident.

The last arch in the maze opens to a wide lawn, on the far side of which is the white Temple itself. Looking back, there are a dozen or more arches that lead back into the hedge maze. Each has an identical appearance, with a simple path of stepping stones set into the grass. At Soy's feet as she passes throug the arch, she can see one of the moon symbols that she had spotted on occasion as they came in.

In the temple, a small group has gathered at the foot of the statue of Ceera. Two of these are individuals who both Keverin and Soy will recognise, the twin Drygers, Thomas and Randall Drake. They tower abovemost of the other guests, standing eight feet tall. Both are in street clothes, and the one with red bangs looks rather bemused.

Energized so much by the ambient flames, Soy almost skips circles around Keverin, begging him to hurry through the maze. Therefore, it was only subconsciously that Soy saw the half-moons on the path, and all but exploded out of the archway, to tackle-glomp the twin Drygers with way much enthusiasm! "Thomas! Randall! Yay, you're here!" Keverin might wonder how such a short vixen is managing to hold BOTH heavily muscled Drygers around by the necks, her feet entirely off the ground. Maybe they are holding her up? "Hey Thomas, what's so funny? You that happy to see me, or something?" Soy grinned, pinching his face-cheek affectionately.

Keverin smiles at Soy's antics, and waves to Thomas and Randall. "Hello my friends, it has been quite a while since I have seen you. Are you two here to learn from Lady Ceera as well? I wonder if she has changed at all..." He sounds as though years had gone by for him. "I wonder if she will even remember me."

The Dryger with the red bangs smiles at Soy, and tickles her slightly in the ribs before moving his nearer arm to form a seat beneath the energetic vixen. He grasps the arm of his brother, who duplicates the move so smoothly one would think the action well-rehersed.

"Welcome, miss Soy!" he says happily "Just marveling at all the pomp and finery here. Such a large and beautiful temple. And the Mistress says this isn't even the largest of her temples!"

"Tom has been smiling like that ever since he got here, miss Soy." the blue-banged twin says with a laugh.

He holds out his hand in greeting to Keverin. "Well met, Keverin! Yes, I am certain the Mistress still remembers you. She mentioned both of you this morning. We shall be studying with you in some areas, and shall help to teach in others. We both alreasy have some skill in Magick, but the Mistress knows Arts that we have never studied. It should prove most interesting indeed."

Keverin smiles and extends his hand, shaking the drygers. When he mentions learning and teaching both, the partial wolfman smiles. "I can only cast but one spell at the moment, and even that drains me. I would of thought the three years I was out in the forest would have toughened my body more, but there must be some sort of missing link to magic that I just can not yet see. I do hope we can help each other though. Most mages seem to almost ignore the body when using magic, focusing on the mind and spirit. I am focusing what I can on the physical." He smiles "I will not bore you with the details, but I would ask, would you know of a place or time to get some food? Hunting in the forests was fine and good, but I still do miss the meals I remembered."

Soy looks at Keverin, confused. "Using magic tires you out?? That's crazy! When I can finally let off a fireball or three, I feel... relieved." Soy pokes Thomas's ribs, partly in revenge, partly for fun. "Is it the same for you guys? Oh crap, hold on." Soy hurriedly hops out of Thomas's and Randall's arms, for her hair had caught on fire. Soy quickly pats it out, before a stray spark burned her love-seats, then climbed back in. "Damn! I'd never thought I could ever say this, but it's TOO hot here! I hope Mistress Ceera teaches me a few things about control, or I'll accidentally burn down her pretty maze, then I'll NEVER know if I was right or not! Oh, sorry guys, me and Kev, is it ok if I call you Kev? were just talking about how Ceera might have designed her maze, with the firebowls and moons, and if it goes in the same way it goes out, and all that."

Soy lazes back happily against Thomas. "Ok Kev, so I've been thinking, maybe the reason you get tired, is because you fight against the magic too much? I mean, I've had my powers since before I can remember," and Soy's voice cracks on the last phrase, but she clears her throat, continuing, "so I just, you know, let it out. How does Sesame put it? She... surrenders to it. Just my two coppers." Soy shrugs, watching Keverin closely, to see how the wolfman took her advice.

OOC: The PG would just like to add that Soy could be completely wrong about how other people access their magic, due to differing magic systems. As yet, Soy has only had experience in one style, and that is her own. We ask that you forgive Soy for her ego-centrism. ^^;

Keverin nods at Soy's advice and considers for a bit. "Well, I feel magic all around me, and can almost literally smell it," he accents this by tapping his nose, then continues, "When I do the one spell I know how to cast, I am trying to draw the magic into and through me, forcefully ejecting it into the shape and effects I am looking for. It take's quite the bit of personal energy to do this. I do not surrender to it, I make it surrender to me." He smiles and shakes his head a bit, "Egotistical I know, but it assures a working spell every time."

((OOC: No problems at all. I find the character quite interesting, and a nice counterweight to my own.))

OOC: Hee! Well, Soy's on a roll now, she's not gonna stop until Ceera shows up, or something. *Cough-hint.* BIC:

Soy reaches up, and grabs each of the twin's nearer face-cheeks, one in each hand! Not pulling, just getting their attention. "OK boys! Now, Kev here is gonna do his great big spell, so shut-up and give him your fullest attention, or I'm not letting go until I pull your faces off! " Soy giggles. You're PRETTY sure she's kidding. ... Yes, she has to be kidding. Still, ow.

Soy still won't shut-up, herself. "Nono, seriously. Maybe you two can see it better than I can. -bleeeeet!- me if I know what's his deal. Then, after you're done, I'll show you how I do it, and you tell me what rocks your boxers more. HAHA!" Ok, now the exciteable vixen is watching you expectantly. And laughing about something.

Keverin smiles and shakes his head, "In my first meeting with Miss Ceera I learned two things. The first was not everything is at is appears to be. My spell is not that powerful, as it is a simple spell called globe of daylight. The second is self control. I have no need to demonstrate it hear and now, in the broad daylight and lit area that is this place. Mayhaps after speaking with Lady Ceera I shall demonstrate, but not before learning her rules for this place."

Soy crossed her arms and pouted. "Spoilsport. Fine, fine, save it for later. You'll probably want to show it to Ceera anyhow."

Soy gets a serious look on her face, and you can almost taste the difference in her speech patterns. "Mistress Ceera taught me two things when I first met her too. The first, and most important one, is 'Everyone gets a second chance.' We'll trade stories about how Ceera taught us our... re-spec-tive lessons, later. I still haven't gotten it all sorted out, yet." Soy almost visibly stumbled over the difficult word, and she glared at you to comment, while she hugged Randall's arm. "And don't you two tell him yet, either." Soy growled softly to the twins.

"Then you have grown much, Keverin, from the impulsive young man that I first met. I am pleased."

Ceera's voice is heard by all in the main temple, seeming to come from nowhere in particular, and everywhere at once. A hush falls over most of the people gathered there, as they look around to see where the Dream Goddess is.

They do not have long to wait. A swirl of purple mist forms in front of the statue of Ceera, and then solidifies into the form of the Goddess herself. Her wings are like golden fire, spread wide, with a span of nearly sixteen feet. Her auburn hair sparkles with highlights of golden flames, and a small golden comb, the top of which is shaped like a bat, holds her hair in an upswept style. She is dressed in the same type of simple Grecian chiton which both the male and female staff of the temple wear. But while the acolytes, priests and priestesses wear white, Ceera's chiton is a rich purple silk, trimmed with gold, and tied close to her body with a thin golden cord. (As shown in the linked picture, though she is in Human form now, and not wolf.) Small golden clasps, also shaped like bats, hold the gown's shoulders together, while the barely overlapping left side of the knee-length garment shows her leg up to the hip. Her lovely legs are bare, as are her feet. But beautiful as she is, it remains her eyes which command the attention of all who gaze upon her. Glowing green eyes, the bright color of burning copper, or green neon.

She smiles gently as she looks at the gathered people, and then with a blaze of golden flames her wings vanish, and the glow in her eyes subsides.

"Greetings, all of you, and welcome to my temple. I am Ceera Darkwynde, Goddess of this temple. This is a day that may change the lives of some of you forever. For today I shall begin to teach a select few of you directly, that you may learn the arts of a Dreamwalker, or of pyromancy, or of such other areas of magick that I, or those whom I shall call upon to aid me, can teach you. For those of you who seek training as a Dreamwalker, if you are successful, you may join the ranks of the priests and priestesses of my temple when your training is complete. The rest of you should, if you apply yourselves and work diligently, be able to master many powerful spells. And more importantly, you shall each learn to master yourselves, to control the Power that flows within you and within the world, bending it to your will, and to your control."

"I do not lightly offer to undertake your training. And I demand that you do not lightly partake of it. Those who are selected for this training must submit themselves entirely unto me, to enter my Service until such time as their training is complete, or I dismiss them. I expect obedience, and I demand that you bend your will to the completion of your assigned tasks, whatever they may be, and that you give it your best effort. If there are any here who were merely curious, or who hoped to gain with little effort, leave now. This is not the place for such as you."

There is a quiet murmuring in the gathered crowd, as three or four timid looking people shrink away from the main group, and one flees the room entirely.

"Very well then. Before we begin, a few of you are already in my service. Come forward now. Thomas, Randall - Attend me. Soy, stand before me, facing the others."

The twin Drygers gently set Soy down, and take their place at either side of Ceera. As they walk to her, their height diminishes, so that by the time they arrive at her side, they are each now six feet tall.

Soy almost jumped out of the twin's arms, when the voice of Ceera spoke. "Eep! Damn! How was I supposed to know she was listening the whole time??" Soy began to get very nervous now. Nevertheless, Soy couldn't help snickering at the one guy who fled, almost as if he had one of Soy's fireballs after him!

Soy couldn't help repeating Mistress Ceera's instructions to herself, muttering under her breath, as if those words were the only thing keeping her from panicking. "Nothing to worry about. She just wants to show us off. Right, stand in front of her, turning around..." Soy did as Ceera bade her, and as she completed the turn, Soy suddenly felt very small and alone, as she faced the rest of the people who were gathered here. From her position, she couldn't see Ceera or the twins, and no way of knowing what Ceera might be doing back there. Soy tried pivoting an ear backwards, but it didn't bend very far. Soy nervously rubbed her geas bracelet, which was visible again, not daring to peek into Ceera's mind. This was Ceera's show now, and the vixen didn't want to interrupt her with stupid questions.

Dammit, Sesame should be here! For moral support, at least. Soy looked through the faces, but didn't spot her. Dammiiiiit... Soy smiled nervously at all the faces before her, back ramrod-straight, tail curled under, trying to put up a brave front in front of everyone. Soy just knew Mistress Ceera was gonna do something sneaky now, she just knew it.

OOC: Soy is smiling like in the sig pic below. Erm... I dunno what Sesame is doing, as SHE'S NOT HERE! >_<; She's plotting over in Porter's thread, supremely unconcerned with Soy's plight.

--------------------

Soy got better after the first few weeks, but Sesame STILL found frequent use for her sewing.

Keverin stays firmly near the front of the group, smiling as Ceera makes her entrance. "She always did like big entrances." He listens as she explains, and then summons the others to her side. He kneels before her and her attendants, "You have my word, Lady Ceera, I will not fail, nor will I give up. My strength and body will hold during your training, and I swear by the wolf within me that I will do as you ask for the duration of my training. Will you accept this humble student?"

Ceera gestures to the two Drygers and to Soy, as she addresses the crowd.

"These three have already entered my service. Thomas Drake and his twin brother Randal Drake shall be studying the advanced Arts with me. They shall both also serve as instructors in some of the lesser Arts, as they are already skilled mages in their own fields of endeavor. This young vixen is Soy, and she recently apprenticed herself to me for the study of Pyromancy. As these three have already been accepted into my service, they will not require further testing for admission. "

She looks at Keverin.

"Keverin, you were also summoned here. You once expressed an interest in my instruction, and I indicated at that time that I was willing to teach you. However, it is my wish that you shall be tested along with the other applicants, that I might better evaluate your current potential, and the directions in which you must be trained. Once testing has been successfully completed, you may then repeat your offer to serve me. Arise, for now."

Gazing at the others there, she asks simply "Who else among you is willing to be tested for admission? Speak now, if it is your wish to study here."

OOC: If we have any readers who wish to participate and who have not yet spoken up, now is the time to step forward and present yourselves for consideration. This thread will remain open until up to five more 'students' have applied for testing, or for one week, whichever comes first. After that, enrollment will be closed, and testing will begin.

Soy breathed a sigh of almost visible relief. #Got myself worked up for nothing. See, I knew she was just showing us off! Idiot!# After properly mentally chastising herself, her nervousness broken down and discarded, the vixen let her confidence and impudent grin fully shine out, waving flirtingly at Keverin and some of the cuter faces in the crowd.

OOC: Unbeknownst to her, Soy's hair had lit on fire again, and had been ever since Soy had turned around. I leave it to you jokers as to whether or not you want to make it IC, and/or respond to it.

"Whew! Is it just me, or is it getting HOT in here?" *Smirk.*

Keverin nods as he stands up again, "I accept your testing Lady Ceera. Much has changed, and I am hoping that the tests will bring about a even greater change. I am ready as could be and await further word." He smiles and recloaks himself, once again hiding his wolfish bits. His hands still clutch the book Ceera may yet recognize as the one she originally found him with.

GM Post: Sorry, but this thread is on Haitus until I can regain my inspiration for how it should proceed from here. I do plan to continue, but I don't know when. *sigh*

OOC: OK... I am going to try to get this going again. If any other Players are interested in joining up, being tested, and doing an RP where they learn magick, now is the time to speak up! It's not that much fun with only two Players and a bunch of my own NPC's. BIC:

Ceera looks over the others gathered here. Aside from Keverin, there is only a young female wolf anthro, a middle aged Human woman, and a slightly overweight Human male who looks to be in his late 20's. The rest step backwards, apparently fearing to be tested.

"Is this all? Very well. If any of you change your minds, you may still join the testing before the first test's deadline expires. Soy, Thomas and Randall, although your admission does not depend upon the test's results, I wish you to participate, as it will show me more of what you already know and have aptitude for."

Ceera's eyes glow, and an image forms before her - a crystal sphere of indeterminate size, with a purple flame burning inside it. The only thing giving a sense of scale are the flames in the sphere, and judging from that, the sphere might be about the size of an orange or a grapefruit.

Ceera closes her eyes and recites, in verse...

"A purple flame within a sphere
it's use and meaning are unclear.
Search you must the temple grounds
until the item lost is found.

Use spells or craft, as divination,
or merely pluck, determination.
Beware how much of Power you use,
more makes things twist and will confuse.

Stand beneath the open sky,
it's location for to spy.
Find it's place and set it right,
before the dawn's first clear true light.

Do as you will, as you see best,
your choices are part of the test.
Each has a goal that they may win,
a different start, a united end."

It is now about four hours past dawn. If the Goddess' words are taken to mean that you have until the sun has set and is again visible on the Horizon, then you have about 20 hours to finish the first test...
