Calter System
08:00 hours DST

'Morning' aboard the DCS Bear's Fang began promptly at 07:00 hours with a general wake-up call over the loudspeakers, leaving the lot of you with exactly one hour to shower, eat, and mentally prepare yourselves for the day ahead. Today would be the start of your first mission, and as you sit in the briefing room awaiting the Colonel's arrival, you might feel a mixture of anticipation and anxiety. This was no TrainSim. This was for real.

~ Briefing Room ~

Everyone

"Ten HUT!"

Every pilot who had assembled in the briefing room rose from their seats in unison, standing firmly at attention as Colonel Arc Nova appeared from a side-door entrance. He strode easily across the raised stage and settled behind the central podium. He turned and glanced over the small crowd, silently looking each and every pilot in the eyes before nodding. "Be seated."

As the sounds of squeaking chairs and shuffling notebooks subsided, Dragon began his briefing. "Welcome to the Calter System, everyone. For those of you who've never been here before, Calter is a small, sparsely populated system containing one habitable world and a few thousand peaceful colonists. Strategically, it has no real value, and at the present time it remains under Confederation control. Being this far from the front lines means that neither the Usari Empire nor ConFed HQ bother to devote a large number of military assets to secure it. Nevertheless, this sector of space and its jump points are part of a long-route back door into the Luis System and other sensitive areas of our territory. As such, it needs to be patrolled regularly to make sure the Usari don't try to open another front. That's where we come in."

Arc waved a small remote and clicked on the large monitor behind him. A graphical representation of the various planets in the Calter system, their orbits, and other places of interest appeared on screen. "The last time ConFed had a ship in this system, it reported very little in the way of Usari activity. Only two long-range scouting vessels were detected, and neither engaged in hostile activities. Since that time, however, HQ has gathered increasing amounts of intel suggesting a growing interest on the part of the Empire. There have been reports of merchant ships coming under fire from Usari fighter craft, and we've lost contact with several of our unmanned scanning probes stationed in the area. HQ believes that the Usari may be trying to stick their foot in the water to test our defenses. If true, our mission will be to bite off a few toes.

Arc clicked another button on the remote, and the graphic onscreen zoomed in to an area on the outskirts of the system, The four ships within the Bear's Fang battle group appeared, as well as the jump point they had just crossed through. All were identified with small, green text. "With the probes gone, our first objective will be a comprehensive scan of the area. To that end, we'll be sending out regular patrols to see what's out there. Most of you will be going out in groups of four or five, but as you're all aware the academy has recently blessed us with a handful of new pilots." He turned then to face the eight of you. "Ladies, gentlemen, this mission gives us an excellent opportunity to see what you've got, so I'm sending you all out together on this one. Watch each other's backs out there, and make us proud." He turned to face the monitor again. "Computer, display 'Kappa.'"

The view on the screen shifted away from the fleet before stopping and crisscrossing a small region of space with assorted lines and data. The route you'd apparently be taking resembled a misshapen diamond. Arc used a pointer to direct your eyes around each point in a circle. "Your first mission will be a simple three-point patrol. Upon leaving the Fang, you'll head to Nav 1 and make sure there are no Usari in the area. From there, go to Nav 2, then to Nav 3, and finally back to the Fang. Be aware that we've detected a small asteroid field in between Navs 1 and 2, so fly carefully, and be on the lookout for fighters. The Usari love to hide in the rocks." Arc turned to face you. "If you do encounter the enemy, you're cleared to engage, but only if the odds look good. Remember, your primary mission is to gather intelligence. We need you to return to the ship in one piece, so don't bite off more than you can chew."

Arc smiled. "Since this will be your first actual combat mission, I'm going to send you out with Cougar." He nodded his head over towards the anthro mountain lion some of you may have seen earlier. He gave a simple two-fingered salute in acknowledgement. "Cougar's the oldest pilot aboard the Fang, but he's also the most experienced. Besides being your Wing Leader, he also knows more about the art of fighter combat than anyone else aboard, so be sure to pay close attention to what he says. I'll be putting Cougar in a Katana class medium fighter, but the rest of you will be flying Daggers. Which reminds me, I have a special guest for all of you to meet." Arc looked over toward the doorway and nodded, signalling to the short, lanky anthro chimpanzee standing there that it was alright to enter and join him on stage. "This is Greaser. He's our chief fighter mechanic and maintenance officer, and the one ultimately responsible for ensuring that all our ships are safe and ready to fly. If you have any questions or concerns about fighter operations, he's the man to talk to." Arc turned his head toward the chimp. "Greaser, these are our new recruits. For their first mission I want to send all of them out in Daggers. Can you get that many ready to fly in the next 40 minutes?"

Greaser gave all of you a considering glance, then turned to answer Dragon's question. "All of our fighters are ready now, sir. But I'm obliged to remind you that we only have nine light fighters. You sure you want to send eight of 'em out on the same mission?"

Arc nodded. "We'll be fine, and I want to make sure they get some flight time under their belts before I give them anything heavier. How fast can you get the ships repaired and rearmed upon their return?"

Greaser chuckled. "Heh, depends how bad they break 'em while they're out there." he paused, his tone growing a bit more serious. "No problem, sir. They'll be ready for the next patrol shift. You have my personal guarantee."

Arc nodded then turned back to face the room. "Very well. The rest of you will be flying a mix of mediums and heavies. Here are your assignments."

As Greaser departed back to the launch bay, the Colonel spent the next few minutes going over the details of the other patrol missions for their respected pilots. At last, the briefing began to wind to a close.

"......and back to the Fang. Remember, people, we don't know for sure what, if anything, is waiting for us out there, so look sharp.

"That's it, everyone. Dismissed, and good hunting."

The pilots saluted and filed out of the briefing room in a hurry, rushing toward the launch bay to get suited up for flight. Naturally, this includes all of you. The flight crew will help you get into your space gear and strap you into your fighters. From there, you'll fire up the engines, prep the computer systems, and await your turn for launch on the catapult.

This is it.

[OOC]: When writing your replies, don't worry about the actual take-off for the time being. Just get yourselves into your fighters and steeled for the mission ahead. Once everyone's ready, the next GM post will take you all out into space. ^_^ [/OOC]

Flight suit secured, he sat in his fighter as the flight crew got him secured for safety. He gave them a thumbs up and a toothy smile hoping they understood his intent. The canopy closed over him as technicians completed their last minute work on the Daggar.

They sealed the canopy and slapped the lycran windows to let him know he was ready. He waved back and turned to his displays. One by one, he turned on the various displays and checked them off in his mind. Everything was almost identical to his training. Only a few minor differences caught his eye. He ticked them off in his memory and booted the computer console and targeting system. When the screen lit up, he went through the check list as he had been taught. Amazing how some things became second nature.

He keyed up starting sequence and checked off each setting, patted the instrument panel in an almost loving caress just before he hit the start control. Turbines whined to life, their shrill response dimly in his ears. He could almost feel the plasma injectors come on line.

"Garebear to launch control . . . all is go. I repeat . . . all is go for launch."

There was nothing to do but wait. His turn would come on the catapult. Once engaged, he would accelerate out of the launch bay and throttle up his engine. No more help, he would be on his own. . . .

Making sure that every piece was in its place, and that every place had its piece, Maus - Pussycat settled himself in his fighter and allowed the preparations to go on around him once his end had been covered. He focused on his own thoughts, his state of mind--- there was a certain nervousness there, flickering at the edge of his consciousness. Good, that's what keeps you alive sometimes.
The mission itself does not sound like a biggie, but sometimes the simplest things can become tremendously complicated.
Waiting for the preparatives to end, his muzzle moves silently... some may think he is uttering a prayer, but in truth he is reciting Prospero's speech, " Fear no more the heat o' th'sun.."
He smiles and takes a deep breath. He speaks his clearing into the comm, and sits back.
" Well, that's that. Let's blast some teddy bears, should any decide to come out of hiding."

Re: Wing Leader (Thread II): The Calter System [CLOSED] new

Unlike most of her fellow 'nuggets', Myra set an alarm linked to an earbug reciever to wake her at 0600 ship time. At the Academy she had always liked to start her day with a light workout, and she saw no reason to change things. Besides, an hour before revilee was always a good time to work out, the gym's usually less crowded then. She figured it should be the same on the Fang.

After her workout she got back to the berthing compartment and into the shower at about the time her fellows were waking up. Of course, after the Academy and flight training they probably expected as much.

Myra sits through the briefing, listening attentively to the mission briefs and taking notes on an electronic 'kneeboard', especially the nav data. It wouldn't do to get lost of her first mission, after all. She also makes notes about the other patrols that will be out at the same time. It would be handy to know how close help is, or how close her patrol will be to others if they need a hand.

If she gets a chance Myra will ask Greaser about the possibility of changing the loadout on her ship, replacing the two dumb rockets in the standard load for two more heat seekers.

Once they head down to the hangar bay Myra goes for her locker to get into her gear. The bay tech assisting her will no doubt notice the one non-standard piece of gear she brings out and attaches to her harness: namely a chrome-plated slugthrowing pistol in a holster, with two spare magazines. Myra takes the gun out of the holster, checks it to be sure the chamber is empty and the safety on, and feeds a magazine into it before returning it to the holster and securing it. Then she takes her helmet and gloves, thanks the tech, and heads for her fighter.

When she reaches the ship she takes a quick walkaround, touching each of it's missiles as she goes. The crew chief is no doubt a bit perturbed by this, since most pilots simply climb aboard and go, but there's no figuring pilots.

Once she's finished her inspection, which only takes half a minute, she climbs into the cockpit. While the crew chief straps her in, Myra asks him "Are there any little quirks this girl has I should know about, or anything needing fixed that you're still waiting on parts for?" Before the crew chief can get indignant Myra holds up a hand, "I'm sure you've done a splendid job keeping her maintained, PO, but this is a government operation after all. If she's AWP for something, I'd like to know it so I don't waste time trying a system that's off-line or iffy."

Once she's strapped in Myra runs through her pre-flight checklist, making sure her ship is ready to launch. She does this swiftly, but 'by-the-numbers', making certain of everything before she reports to Pri-Fly. "Fang, Dagger 7. Radio check. Prepared to launch, awaiting instructions. Over."

(In case you're wondering about some of the jargon:
nugget= a new pilot, fresh from training
PO= Petty Officer
AWP= AWaiting Parts
Pri-Fly= Primary Flight control

And, in case you don't know, a crew chief is an enlisted man who's assigned to a specific aircraft and responsible for all it's maintenace.)

(OOC:
Arc said in the last thread: "Oh, and Neema? I highly recommend sleeping in your flightsuit." --- Good idea. )

Myra gets a grumpy snarl from Neema as she stands up early. But it must have been more of reflex, since moments later she is already in deep sleep again. After the wake-up call she gets up quickly though and prepares for the day like everyone else.

In the briefing room one can easily see Neema's excitement. Her tail twitches and when she sits she fidgets with her feet.
She tries to memorize the important points of the mission."Fly to three points and back here. Seems simple enough."

At the launch bay she'll gladly accept the help of the crew to get her ready. After she is in her flight gear she puts some sweet snacks in a free pocket and a small container with fresh water in another.
Before she enters her fighter she hands the closest crewmember half a candy bar with the words: "You get the other half when I come back."

Once inside, she gets comfy (as far as it's possible) and checks her systems. The order might be a bit chaotic, but she doesn't miss one.

"Candyman is ready for launch." she reports, followed by a short giggle.

*while waking up, Jacob did a few stretches in bed, only spanning a time frame of thirty seconds, just to get him half prepped for the day. He got out of the bed, got into the shower, and got out before too much time had passed. Jacob got into uniform and walked out of the barracks alone and silently, for most everyone else had gone. He proceeded down the ship until he heard over the intercom*

"all pilots report to briefing, all pilots to the briefing room."

*Jacob found that he was only a hallway away from the room, so he entered in about before everyone. after listening intently to the Colonel, jacob saluted colonel Nova and filed out with the rest of the pilots. Following the rest of the running crowd he proceeded down the hallway untill he found the prep room for "kappa." half leaping into his position, his flightcrew helped him into his suit and got him ready for flight. he had rehursed this as part of the course in the academy, but there was a bit of a nervous flare inside him, because this was actually real. there was no feeling like this. After the prep room, Jacob ran out and onto the flight deck. Looking around the flight deck he found a light fighter with his callsign embedded on the side of the ship, next to the cockpit. Jacob half-sprinted towards his ship and climbed up the ladder with ease. placing his hands on the side of the ship, he heaved himself over the side and down into the slightly cramped area. Yet, it felt more like a quick rush of adrenalene to the brain. Jacob activated his onboard controls and took control of the ship. He placed his comm system onto his helmet and activated it. stoping for just a moment, he took a deep breath.*

"just like flight school... no bad moves."

*looking to the onboard terminal, Jacob activated all engines to standby, and checked all missle bays to make sure they were armed and ready. cannons were full and recharge was operational. armor was at full capacity, and shields were charging as we speak. Jacob was taxied out to his spot on the deck, waiting for the catapult to open for his ship. switching his comm system to vox, he toggled to the Fang's control tower.*

"Phantom to control tower, prepped and ready to launch. awaiting orders to taxi to catapult. standby."

*after recieving a reply, Jacob toggles his comm system to "comm flight Kappa." He then waits to launch off the catapult and into space.*

Myra might get up at 0600, but Xavier isn't far behind, yawning to himself. Like her, he had trained himself to be an early riser at the Academy, no matter how little sleep he got the previous night, but likely for a different reason. After all, first one up gets first shot at the showers.

Which is exactly what he does, slipping out of his bunk and grabbing a new flightsuit and his toiletries form his locker. Slipping into the bathroom, he commandeers a shower for the next ten minutes or so, using the hot water to help wake himself up.

Let's see... early morning briefing, and then a mission... Need something hot to drink...

So, right after getting himself all clean, combed, and dressed Mmm... I can shave tomorrow..., the human is heading out the door with a wave to his companions, most of whom are probably still waking up. Admittedly, I could've done better than... five? six? hours of sleep? Yeah... let's not make a habit of this, boyo.

He stifles a yawn as he wanders into the mess hall, grabbing a mug of cocoa and a hearty breakfast. Well, heavy, at least, and not too large. Getting enough food was important, but less was better than more for the underweight pilot, who went to bed hungry as often as not because he'd just not bother eating. So, pangs of hunger he can ignore, but a stomach too full would just dull his mind. Not the smartest thing to do before a mission...

Not yawning as much, and onto his second (or was it third?) mug of cocoa, Xavier nabs a seat in a back corner of the briefing room, listening and taking mental notes as to the flight plan and objectives. Ooh... rocks... Note to self: be on Candyman's wing in case she gets the bright idea to go rock-hopping...

Just a half an hour (and one bathroom trip) later, he's sitting in his fighter, checking read-outs, thrusters, weaponry status... "Number two missile isn't responding," he calls down to a nearby tech, who promptly swears, most likely because it's a recurring problem, "It's there, just switch the thing..."

The anthro cougar climbs up next to Xavier to show him what bit of input code to change to get the proper response from the missile. "Oh! I see. Well, sorry for being stupid, then..."

The human flushes lightly You should have known that... it's a simple enough error...

The cougar just chuckles to himself and helps Xavier get his various hoses and wires attached, before double-checking the seal on the cockpit and giving the human a thumbs-up and a slap on the canopy.

Right, then.... Last checks...

His radio comments and responses are, well, slightly on the informal side of 'by-the-book' and they sound more than a bit off-hand. At the moment, Xavier is busy stretching out his spatial sense, altering it in a manner akin to stretching one's muscles before a day of activity. He's never been one to rely solely on his instrumentation, especially when, this way, the data gets fed to his brain that much faster.

Some how, Epee managed to wake up just between every one else, and miraculously avoiding contact till the briefing. She had been craving a few minuets to herself, as all of the social business had drained her. Ever since Epee had arrived in the dream it had been on taxing encounter after another: reading expressions, understanding what someone was really saying, understanding what should apparently be conmen words to any body from any place. So on and so forth.
-Am I really that inapt at living…?- The thought is wiped from Epee’s mind as the call to the briefing room is made.
She entered, sat, and acted as she usually was; friendly and un-at-ease, memorizing the important details told to her before being dismissed. Epee got suited up with the aid rather quickly considering how confusing her suit was and was up and in her ‘Dagger’ plain, double-checking gages and the such as she had been taught to do. With a finle look over Epee snapped on her helmet and gave the go ahead sign to those on the deck.
“Oh, oh, oh, off we go a-hunt-ing! A-hunt-ing! Lions, tigers, and bears, oh my!…” Epee half mumble the little ditty over the com as she got ready to exit the Fang.

"Minimize your unnecessary chatter, Boomer," an artificial voice scolds over the comm. "And mind you don't bump your head."

The voice clicks in again a few seconds later. "Dagger Four, ready to launch."

[OOC]: Ever wonder why it takes me so long to update this thread? Get a snack, make yourselves comfortable, and take a glance at the novel below to find out. O.o [/OOC]

~ Flight Deck ~

Vixen

Though Greaser is very busy overseeing all of the fighter preparations and launches going on, he does still have a moment to hear out your request.

"Sorry, Vixen. Normally I'd be glad to, but Cougar specifically requested that you all be given a standard loadout on your first mission. He generally takes the standard load himself, and often tells new pilots to 'try them before you deny them.'" He shrugs. "Can't say I disagree really. No telling what you'll run into out there, so it's generally best to be prepared for any situation. Nevertheless, I know better than anyone how every pilot has their own style for missile use, and I don't want to tell 'em I know better when they're the ones doing the flying." He stops for a moment, apparently listening to something over his headset before turning around and giving a hand signal to a group of techs across the deck. "Sorry. Look, just humor Cougar for this one mission and, after that, I'd be happy to let you make the decisions. Sorry, I gotta go." He turns and shouts "Hey! The label says 'No Step' for a reason!"

Once you reach your fighter and ask about it, the techs who are there look at each other, then back to you. "Uh...we didn't spend two weeks in the Luis system playing poker, ya know. All fighters are ready to go. If they weren't, Greaser'd never let 'em fly." Once they're sure you're convinced, they'll help you finish getting strapped in.

Candyman

The crewmember looks at you blinking. Then he blinks at the candybar. Then he blinks at you again. "Um......Oookaaaaaay." O.o

~ Space ~

Everyone

Despite the large number of ships being readied for launch, your wait for takeoff is relatively short. A few fighters already took off while you were getting ready, either to go out on their own missions or simply to provide protective escort for the Fang. Most, however, won't actually launch until you or others return from your own missions. No sense sending everything out at once and leaving the fleet without some level of fighter cover.

One-by-one your fighters are each taxied over to one of three available catapults (two leading off the bow of the ship, and one off the aft,) hooked up, given one last check, then hurled at high velocity into space. You feel a bump as your ship slides through the invisible energy barrier separating the artificial air and gravity environment of the Fang from the cold, weightless vacuum of space. And then...you take control. A quick check of both your radar and HUD shows Cougar's Katana, along with the other fighters in your wing (depending on when you launched.) Once all eight of you are spaceborne, your wing leader's voice comes over the com.

"All right, everyone. Form on my wing. Wildecard, Boomer, Judge, Candyman, Vixen, Pussycat, Phantom, and GareBear, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Cougar and I'll be walking you through your first mission. First of all I want to say what an honor it is to be with you on this patrol. A lot of pilots gripe about the Academy not training cadets the way they feel they should be trained, but given the chance, few of them actually want to teach new lieutenants the real-world skills they picked up during their own time on the front. Me, I love being able to impart my wisdom on the next generation. Heh, must be the grandpa in me."

There's a short pause before the com crackles to life again. "Anyway, you can consider today to not only be your first real mission, but also your last training lecture. I know you all have spent countless hours in the classroom as well as in the simulators, but flying a real fighter into actual combat is a different experience in a lot of ways. Those of you who paid attention and took notes in school can relax a little and consider the next few hours to be a simple brush-up. Those of you who slept through class better pay close attention.

"Okay, first thing's first. I want you all to take a good look at your fighter's cockpit. Though every fighter class has their instruments arranged in different ways, they all relay the same information, so once you know what everything does, you should be able to move from ship to ship without any trouble.

"The large circle in the center of your console is the Radar Display. This is probably your most important piece of equipment, because not only does it tell you where everything in the immediate vicinity is, it also helps you navigate. Objects in the small, center circle are located in front of you. The round pie-wedges surrounding it represent the sectors above, below, left, and right of your ship. And finally, the ring lining the outer edge is for objects behind you. Don't forget this, because in the heat of battle when you lose visual contact with your target, the first place your eyes should go is down here to find out where he went. No Usari will be able to slip in on your tail without your radar telling you about it, so it's a good way to keep track of the battle even if you can't actually see most of it.

"Every important object is represented by a different shape and color for easy identification. Friendly fighters show up as blue triangles, and friendly capital ships show up as blue squares. Enemy ships show up as red triangles and squares respectively. The size of the shape determines their relative range from your fighter, so a fighter at close range shows up as a large triangle, whereas distant ones appear as small triangles, and so forth. Missiles and torpedoes show up as small, yellow dots, so if an enemy launches one at you, you can keep track of it with your radar. Finally, the white diamond you see there now represents a Nav point. Your mission parameters have all been downloaded into your ship's computer, and it will automatically show you where you need to go at the appropriate times. All you have to do is point your ship in the right direction and hit the gas.

"So let's do so now. All of you, turn your ships toward Nav 1 and set your throttle to 450 KPS. I know Daggers can go quite a bit faster than that, but I don't want to get left behind." He waits until you all get into position and moving towards the first Nav point, the Fang falling away behind you. "You'll notice that the Nav point target shows up on your HUD once it's in front of you. Overlap that cross mark with your guns' crosshairs (also on the HUD) and you'll be perfectly lined up.

"Speaking of your velocity, take a look at your Speed Indicators just to the upper left and right corners of your Radar Display. 99.9 percent of the time, the numbers displayed there will be equal in value, but don't forget that the one on the left is your Actual Speed, and the one on your right is your Selected Speed. These babies perform really well, but they don't start or stop on a dime, so just remember that if you set your speed to 0 KPS, it'll take a few seconds before your ship actually stops. Likewise, you'll have to wait a few seconds to get back up to speed, even after you've set your desired velocity. Daggers are the fastest ships in the ConFed's inventory, and have a maximum cruising speed of 540 KPS. The Katana I'm flying, however, can only go 450 KPS. The other ships just get slower from there. If you're flying with a mixed group, or escorting a cap ship, be sure to keep your speed in line with theirs so you don't get separated.

"Oh, and the 'KPS' stands for 'Klicks Per Second,' not 'Kilometers Per Second.' If it was the latter, you'd be travelling much too fast to be all that effective in a dogfight."

"Okay, next I want you all to look at the bar of seven lights just above your Radar Display. This is your Blaster Charge Indicator, and it tells you how much energy your guns have. Your guns are your primary weapons, and every shot you make takes the same amount of energy from the guns' capacitors. As you shoot, you'll notice the lights along your indicator slowly begin to wink out and go black. When they all go out, your guns are empty, and you'll have to wait a few seconds for them to recharge. Daggers are equipped with light guns that do the least amount of damage, as far as lasers go, but have the longest range and take the least amount of energy. If you fired them as fast as you could with a full charge, you should be able to get a good 10 shots off before they went completely dry. It's best not to let that happen, however, since you'd be left defenseless. When in battle, you'll have to shoot as straight as you can, and try to delay your shots so you don't drain your guns too quickly. If you can help it, it's a good idea to try and keep a little bit of energy in your capacitors when engaging the enemy. But if he's close to dying anyway, you can shoot a little more and finish him off quickly. It's a judgment call that will be left up to you to make during each given situation.

"Just as important is the small, rectangular window just to the left of your Radar Display. This is your Armor and Shield Indicator, and it's the one thing that'll tell you how much protection you have between you and the cosmos. The thick lines along the top and bottom are your first line of defense: your shields. They actually surround the whole of your fighter, but are primarily directed to the front and rear and are on independent charge circuits. Each one is given a numerical value depending on stopping power. In the case of the Dagger, it's 40. The best thing about shields is that they'll slowly recharge back to full power after they've been hit, meaning that they're essentially unlimited. The trick is to make sure you don't get hit in the same area too many times too fast, or they'll quickly get drained to nothing.

"If that happens, your second line of defense is your armor. Armor covers all sides of your ship, and though your display doesn't give it a numerical value, for Daggers it's also 40. Armor will protect you when your shields are drained, but remember that they don't recharge, so treat them as an emergency reserve. Once they're gone, they're gone until Greaser gets a chance to replace them. Oh, one last thing about the shields, don't forget that they're tied into the same recharge generator as the blasters. If the generator has to recharge both your guns and shields at the same time - which is nearly all the time - it'll take a bit longer than it would for either one individually. Something to be aware of.

"With a rating of just 40, the Dagger has the weakest shields and armor of all the fighters in the fleet, so remember to use its high velocity to evade incoming missiles and stay out of the crosshairs of enemy fighters. The best way to protect yourself from a bullet is not to get hit by it.

"Just over to the right side of your Radar Display, you'll see a couple of indicators. The 'Lock' Light at the top is simply a flashing beacon that tells you if a missile is locked on to you. You'll hear a warning klaxon in addition to this, so when that happens, drop what your doing and either take evasive action or release a decoy. Most of the time you can avoid a missile simply by evading it, but in large-scale battles there are often lots of missiles flying about, so you may want to drop a decoy to take out a bunch of them at once. Daggers have 8 decoys.

"Just below that, you'll see your Fuel Indicator. Remember that this gauge only refers to the amount of afterburner thrust you have left. Your cruise engines and maneuvering thrusters have unlimited energy, so you won't have to worry about running out of gas in the middle of space. With your afterburners on, your fighter can boost forward at well over 1000 KPS. At that speed, you can avoid missiles more easily, catch up to fleeing enemy fighters, or close the distance between you and an enemy cap ship more quickly. Heh, a lot of pilots use it to make several hour-long patrol missions pass more quickly, which is fine, as long as you make sure to save some for a potential battle."

Cougar glances down at his console as a new set of data flashes across his screen. "Well ladies and gentlemen, looks like we've made it to Nav 1. Doesn't appear to be anything of interest here, so let's go check out Nav 2. Take a quick look at your Radar Display. You'll notice that the diamond representing Nav 1 is gone and one representing Nav 2 has taken its place. The computer does that automatically so you don't get caught going to the wrong place. All right, everyone stay on my wing and adjust your heading to Nav 2 while I continue going over your flight systems. Any questions so far?"

Re: Wing Leader (Thread II): The Calter System [CLOSED] new

Until their ships are launched Myra will follow the directions of her deck director to the letter. The last thing anyone needs is an uncontrolled ship on the crowded flight deck, and her director can see more of what's around her than she can.

Once the Dagger is hooked up to the catapult Myra firewalls the throttle and glances at the Cat Officer while giving him a thumbs-up gesture followed by a salute. She then puts her head back against the headrest just before being shot into space.

Once in space her first task is to check her radar and IFF and find her flight leader, then head for him. While taking up her place in formation she runs through a series of control checks, getting a feel for how this ship reacts to the controls.

She listens to Cougar's description of the fighter's systems atentively, despite having heard all of this plenty of times during training. She's reassured by his obvious intent not to miss anything important, or to assume that the nuggets already know something. By her nature Myra doesn't like making assumptions about anything, and she's glad to see the flight lead doesn't either.

She hadn't wanted to interrupt Cougar's lecture, but once he asks if there are any questions Myra will speak up. "Sir, can our radars operate in passive mode, detecting other radar emissions without emitting itself? If so, would it be advisable for some of us to go passive, so any Usari in the area won't know how many of us there are?"

(Note: Passive detection would also allow you to pick up an active enemy radar long before it can get enough of a return off you to detect you. Of course, it doesn't detect things that don't emit radiation, like a fighter that's got it's own radar in passive mode, 'listening' for you in turn.)

Flying through space - Weeee :) new
      #505618 - Sun Aug 01 2004 11:46 AM

Even before Neema is shot into space she is pressed in the seat, since she tenses all her muscles. She also clenches her teeth and clings to the controlstick a bit firmer than necessary. When the fighter finally is accelerated and leaves the Fang Neema almost doesn't notice it.

Once in space she breathes a "Whew." followed shortly by an "Oooooh.". Slowly her tension is replaced with excitement.
With shaky hands she aims for Cougar's ship and accelerates gently. In the time it takes to take her place in the formation, she turns off her microphone and shouts: "Weeeeeeee!!" as loud as she can. Then she takes a few deep breaths and turns it back on.
As she takes her place she calmed down completely and steers with a steady hand.

She listens to Cougar's explanation of the cockpit and all the things she learned in school come back to her mind.

Neema doesn't have any questions (well, not any intelligent or useful ones) and flies quietly in formation.

Pressed into the seat by the sudden acceleration, his Daggar is shot into space. At once he breathed deep. Freedom . . . he was in his element. Nothing above, below or around him but the blackness of space and the Fang with its escorts. It had been a long time. Radar indicators showed him where his fellow pilots were and where the wing leader was.

Cougar's voice rattled on in his head set, filling sensitive ears with a cacaphony of sound even with the sound turned down as far as he dared take it. NAV 1 . . . He lined up on it, watched the other blips move off in even acceleration and followed.

Now to see if these Daggars were all they were cracked up to be. A few simple test maneuvers. . . .

Well . . . that had been enlightening. He came up on NAV 1. Other fighters were around him closing on the mark. Nothing interesting to see and he had learned a few things. Sim-games they used to practice on were faster and quicker to respond than this small ship. Fast and maneuverable as it was, it was a slower than what he wanted. His reflexes and response time were much faster than the machine could accomplish. As one of the "Third Realm," quick reflexes and nerve response were essential to flight. He had to slow himself to allow the daggar ample response time to make the moves he demanded of it.

This would take some time to adjust to properly. DRAT! All his flight training should have warned him about this. Operating in an atmosphere where a lot of his actual flight training took place was far different than space. There, the training fighters maneuvered faster because of lift and air pressure. How long. . . ? He pondered his circumstance. It would work. By NAV 2 he would have it down. It meant some slight adjustments in reflex action, but it was doable. Out here there was no time for relearning. He had to make it right the first time. The Usari gave no time outs or second chances. . . .

Moiety sits quietly in his cockpit, holding perfect formation without any experimenting with maneuvers. He listens silently to Cougar's lessons, watching his own scanners and his visible field with great attention. He already knows the "official" answers to most of the questions anyway.

~ Heading to Nav 2 ~

Everyone

Cougar's voice comes back over the comm system. "Good question, Vixen. Remember though that our ships don't actually use 'RADAR,' but rather a far more sensitive array of detection equipment. Not only can they pick up objects in all directions, they can also differentiate between rocks, mines, and ships and track each one simultaneously in real-time. They can identify an enemy fighter's class and condition, and send countless amounts of optical data to your ship's CPU so that it, in turn, can generate artificial and spacially accurate sound effects through your headset. All the engine noises and laser blasts and explosions you'll hear are actually artifacts of your computer, and are linked directly with your sensors. Sorry, but there is no passive mode. We just call it 'RADAR' because it's part of the popular lingo."

Once he's made sure that all of you are still in formation he continues with his lesson.

"Up at the top of your cockpit you'll see your Eject Warning Indicator. In the heat of battle a lot of pilots find it difficult to keep track of their ship's status, and wind up believing that their shield strength is higher than it actually is. This device is meant to help counteract that. When your ship is in imminent danger of collapse, this light will blink and a loud klaxon will sound over your headset, overriding everything else. The first thing to remember when that happens is don't panic! The warning will shut itself off once your shields have had a chance to recharge, and if you're not under intense fire at the time, it's better to try and recover your fighter than to simply throw it away by ejecting needlessly. Most of the time, you'll use this indicator not as a recommendation to eject, but rather as a recommendation to get serious about defense. If you're on an enemy's tail and you hear it go off, disengage immediately and take evasive action, because it probably means that another fighter has placed itself on your tail and is aiming to kill you. If you keep taking hits and you just can't shake the fighter or fighters on you long enough to recover, then you'll want to pull the eject lever. Remember that punching out should only be used as a last resort. Our side doesn't have the resources to sacrifice planes everytime the paint gets chipped."

Cougar glances out through his viewscreen. "Alright, folks. Looks like we're coming up on that asteroid field Dragon mentioned during the briefing. Everyone drop your speed back to 200 KPS and keep your eyes open. While it's true that the Usari love to hide in asteroid fields, they aren't the only things you need to watch out for. Your fighter's defensive systems are designed to repel energy blasts and small-scale collisions, such as with missiles and other fighters. They aren't designed to protect you against a collision with something as large and solid as these boulders. Always always always remember to reduce your speed before entering an asteroid field, because if you hit just one at full-throttle, you're dead. The same rule applies when travelling through Usari minefields as well, though the threat there is explosive, rather than kinetic energy. Oh, there's one other important difference as well." Cougar slowly angles his fighter to bear on an incoming 'roid and engages, firing his blasters and striking it over and over until at last the rock disintegrates into a shower of fragments. "You can destroy asteroids with your guns if you hit them hard and fast enough, so if you see one coming at you, don't be afraid to blow it away. Mines, on the other hand, cannot be destroyed. They're too small to target effectively, so you'll just have to dodge them.

"Remember that while fighter craft are small and agile enough to navigate through asteroids and mines, capital ships are not. So if you're on an escort mission, you'll have to go around any fields that you find.

"Okay, now I want you all to take a look at the Video Display Units (VDU) on either side of your cockpit. Both monitors will give you different sets of information, but that information will always be in the same location, no matter which fighter you're flying. Let's start with the Left VDU. Right now you'll see a graphical representation of your ship along with every weapon it's equipped with. I've already talked a bit about the blasters, but you should know that Daggers are unique in that they only have one type of gun. All of our other fighter classes have a mixture of two types, and you'll be able to manually select between them or activate all four at once. Now I know what you're thinking, but use that last option wisely. Though you can cover a wide area with a lot of firepower, you'll also drain your power reserves really fast.

"You can also use this screen to select which of your missiles you want to be armed or, as with the guns, you can set all of them to launch at the same time in a single, massive attack. You really won't use that feature often, but sometimes it's handy against capital ships that you really want to see dead in a hurry. Missiles are generally more powerful than blaster shots and most of them can lock onto and home in on selected targets. But as you can see your supply is limited, so use them only in support of your gunfire, not in place of it. There are four different types of missiles divided into two different catagories: small and normal. Daggers, unfortunately, can only equip small missiles, like dumb fires and heat seekers, but the other fighters can be loaded with any type.

"Right now your ships are loaded with two Dumb Fire Missiles and two Heat Seeker missiles. Dumb Fires have no tracking equipment whatsoever, and will simply fly in a straight line after you fire them. They are, however, packed with explosives, which makes them the most powerful missile type in our inventory. Use them against capital ships or against heavily defended fighters at close range. Heat Seekers are the next most powerful, and as their name suggests they will home in on a target's heat signature after being fired. But always keep in mind that if your enemy successfully evades this missile, it will search for and lock onto the next most opportunistic target, even if that happens to be a friendly, or even your own fighter. I don't mean to scare you, just tell you that it's best to use these when you have a relatively clear line of fire on one or a group of enemies.

"Once you start flying the other ships, you'll have the option of equipping them with Identification Friend-or-Foe (IFF) missiles or Image Recognition (IMREC) missiles. IFFs are the weakest missiles in the ConFed armory, but they're also one of the safest. As you know, all ConFed ships emit coded signals that positively identify them as friendlies. Any ship not emitting these signals is identified as a potential enemy. IFF missiles lock onto the nearest non-friendly ship it detects and tracks them relentlessly. They're quite a bit harder to dodge than heat-seekers, but in the event they are evaded, they'll simply scan the area for the next non-friendly target and go after that. You won't have to worry about killing a buddy or yourself with these, unless their friend-or-foe signal emitters are damaged. It's rare that that happens, though. IMREC missiles are a little more powerful and also very safe. They take a couple seconds to lock on to a target before you can fire them, but once released, they'll go after that one selected ship like a bloodhound. These are the hardest missiles to dodge since they'll only track one specific target, but make sure you know what ship they've identified before you fire them. You wouldn't want to launch one at an Usari fighter only to find out later that the missile's computer recognized the image of the friendly fighter on his tail instead.

"Oh, and before I forget I suppose I should tell you about Torpedoes. They're not actually missiles, and they're massive enough that only heavy fighters and bombers can be equipped with them, but their power is devastating. The bad news is that they can only be used against capital ships, and take between 30-40 seconds to lock onto their targets, during which time you'll be a sitting duck. The good news is that once they are locked on, they can pass through a cap ship's shields and hit it directly. 95% of the time one torpedo hit will utterly destroy a capital ship, no matter how large. This is why it's so important to make the destruction of enemy bombers a higher priority than their escorts. If the Fang gets hit by one of those suckers, it's game over for all of us.

"Besides weapons, the Left VDU will also tell you if there are any damaged systems aboard your fighter. Engines, generators, communications, IFF...stuff like that. Heh, there was one time where my ejection mechanism was destroyed during a battle. Didn't sleep for two whole days after that one.

"The Right VDU gives you information about things outside your ship. If you look at it now you'll see a description of your current heading and just below that the distance between you and your destination. In a battle, this screen will automatically change to display information on your currently selected target; most notably its class, distance, and the strength of its shields and armor. The right VDU is also your comm system. If you get a message from another pilot, it'll come through over here. If you want to send a message to another pilot, you can use this screen to select which person it'll go to. The Usari will regularly try to psych you out by sending taunts or threats, but don't let it get to you. You can taunt them in return, if you like, but remember that your guns are the only real form of 'communication' they'll understand."

Cougar takes a long, sweeping look around his ship. "Okay, looks like we've cleared the asteroids, and Nav 2 is just ahead. Set your speed back to 450 KPS and follow me in. Doesn't look like there's a whole lot to report here, either. Maybe the fish just aren't biting today. You people still awake back there? I hope I didn't put you all to sleep."

Myra isn't asleep. She also didn't miss the fact that while Cougar did give out a lot of information, he also didn't answer her question about passive sensors. She decides to let it pass for now, and ask him about it once the flight's back on the Fang.

While the group passes through the asteroids Myra will pay close attention to her sensors as well as on the rocks. She looks for anything that doesn't look like a rock, any unknown sensor or comm signal, anything that doesn't look like what should be there. Even if she can't ID it, she'll report anything that doesn't feel right. Better to chance looking foolish than to take a missile up the tailpipe.

As they leave the asteroids, she doesn't relax. If anything, she gets even more paranoid about an ambush. After all, the best time to hit someone is when they think they're out of danger...

Cruising the asteroid belt left him with an edgy feeling. He didn't like being unable to reach out with his senses. Nothing got out of the cockpit.

Ambush . . . out of no where, POW! Although nothing happened it left his heart beating faster. Come on! He had trained like everyone else. Being a flyer himself, he had advantages others didn't . . . faster reflexes, better eyesight, a personal sensory array that would put these fighters to shame. It didn't make him feel any more confident. Being untried in battle didn't help. He wished he could be as cool as Cougar seemed to be.

NAV 2 lay just ahead. They had cleared the asteroid field. He took a deep breath of relief. No Usari.

The other fighters began to queue into formation. He could not see any of their faces. What did they feel? Did they experience the same edginess he did. Did their hearts race? If he knew they did, it wouldn't be so bad. He wouldn't feel like an outsider.

[OOC] It never got on my Favorites list... >.>;;; Sorry. [/OOC]

Xavier is humming along lightly to himself, flexing and stretching his senses to keep track of the other vessels, using that information to supplement what he got from his fighter's sensors. The computer could better tell him what types of things were out there, but his own senses would more quickly relay the information of where things were.

Occasionally, he tries different orientations, rolling his fighter around and checking out the feel of the thrusters on it. Ah... very nice... very nice indeed. It handles well, for being the next best thing to a cardboard tube strapped to a rocket and several high-yield bombs.

Always fun stuff, being a pilot...

"Question, Cougar... Since the Usari can send messages to us... and we can send messages to them... are our inter-fighter communications secure? I wouldn't like to discuss an ambush with my wingman and discover that our prey has heard every word of it..."

After the first wave of excitement faded away, being out in space and flying in a straight line isn't all that thrilling, so Neema is somewhat happy to get into the asteroid field.

She listens to Cougar's explanations with one ear, while watching the asteroids. As his explanation comes to the missiles she thinks: "Those asteroids look bland. I wonder if I could color them, if I would fill my rockets with paint."

After they left the asteroid field, Neema answers Cougar's question: "Not yet."

Ooc} O0; Well shoot…. I didn’t think I had been away so long ^__x; My deepest apologies! I’ll give fair warning now that my posting will be scattered, not like this! I do so hope any way.

Ic}Epee sat quietly listening to Cougar and the few questions that arose. Many of them where ones she’d ask, if she was a second faster on speaking up. Regardless Epee check the components of her ship as they were talked over, while keeping an alert ear out for there ‘peek-a-boo’ friends. As they clear the asteroid field Epee half wishes it would come with them, feeling naked for cover, but is happy their run is half way done. Slowing down to the requested 450 KPS Epee goes ahead and gives a holler to Cougar so he knows she’s still alive.

*Phantom listens intently to Cougar as he explains the radar and VDU screens, and toys with them a little bit to make sure he knew what he was doing. As they enter into the Asteroid field, Phantom drops his speed to 200 KPS as he was instructed and flew cautiously. When he asked for questions, Phantom simply replied "No sir" and continued on. On the other side of the asteroid field, He kicks his speed back up to 450 KPS and falls back into formation with Cougar and the rest of the flight wing.*

"ya we're still here sir. Maybe the usari are targeting a different part of this sector. either way, all radar and sensors are go. Nothing but ConFed ships in the area."

*Jacob checked his radar once again and looked around his cockpit for visual. Nothing around but us...I don't know whether to be happy or wonder about whats going on in the rest of the sector...hope all is as well as it is here....but who i can't even really hope for that now can i? as they neared Nav 2, Jacob continued to fly in perfect formation with cougar, while he, and everyone else probably, kept a sharp eye out for any sign of usari activity.*

[OOC]: I'm not sure what sort of answer you're looking for, Myra. If you still have questions, please PM me. [/OOC]

Your nine-member strong fighter group rounds Nav 2 without incident. Just as before, each of your navigational computers automatically switches your heading over to your next destination; Nav 3. Cougar takes the lead into another course change while the rest of you follow along his wing. It's been a long trip so far, and aside from Cougar's (droning?) voice, there isn't a whole lot else to focus your attention on. Looking out the canopy, you get a sense of just how vast and empty space really is. While it's true that even the dimmest stars are easy to see, and the occasional nebula or distant galaxy add a splash of color to the surrounding darkness, your first mission has turned out to be rather boring thus far. A fact that could be considered both good and bad, depending on your point of view.

"They are, Wildecard. That's not to say your personal transmissions couldn't still be picked up by an enemy scout vessel on a surveillance mission, but they're heavily encrypted, so they're not gonna be able to tell what you're saying without a lot of time and effort. As far as enemy fighters are concerned, that's just not possible. Even if they did have the necessary equipment on board to do it. Naturally, the same rule applies to the Usari, so don't waste your time trying to eavesdrop on them, either.

"Basically, any transmission you make to another ConFed vessel can be considered secure. But if you want to talk to most civilian ships, or any type of unidentified craft that doesn't have the proper ConFed decoders installed, you'll have to contact them via a general, un-secure transmission. That's really all you're doing when you taunt the Usari. ConFed command doesn't officially approve of trash-talking your opponents, but the psychological factor can't be discounted. Just remember not to let it get to you when they call you up in return and describe certain acts involving certain portions of your mother's anatomy. Stay cool, and focus on your trai..."

Cougar's voice cut off suddenly as several blips popped up on his radar screen. "Whoa...heads up, people. Looks like we got some activity near Nav 3." Your own radar shows them as well. Nine vessels at 12 o'clock flying in a tight formation, their heading intersection your own path to Nav 3. They were still too far out to make a detailed identification, but you can tell they were much too small to be capital ships.

And according to your your ship's scanners, none of them were built in any NCD factory.

"Crap. And just when it looked like we were gonna have an easy time of it today," Cougar grumbled, adjusting his vector toward the enemy ships. He knew that if he could see them, they could see the lot of you, as well. Indeed, only moments later the ships broke away from their original heading and started careening towards your group, afterburners flaring silently in the dark. It didn't take long for them to close the distance enough for each of your targetting computers to get a positive ID. Eight Llioku class light fighters, and one Ha'rha'ang class heavy fighter, in staggered formation, approaching your position at high velocity.

"Nine bogies, inbound," Cougar shouted, tightening his grip on the control stick. "Alright, people, look sharp. Sorry this had to happen on your first day out, but this is what you've trained for. I'll take the heavy fighter myself. The rest of you, pick one of the remaining fighters and stay on them. Make sure they don't get a bead on your wingmate's tail." Cougar kept an eye on his Right VDU, watching the distance close between you and your enemies. When the Usari were about 10,000 klicks out, he shouted over the tac-net again.

"Here we go. All ships...Break and attack!"

[OOC]: For this RP, your targets will be identified as "H1" for the heavy fighter, and "L1 - L8" for the light fighters. And before you ask, no, it's not a coincidence that the first letter in an Usari fighter's name is the same as its class. Llioku, Masakaru, Ha'rha'ang, and Ba'shara, for Light, Medium, Heavy, and Bomber, respectively.

Just thought I'd make it easy for ya. Be sure to say which fighter you're going after in your next post, so I can choreograph the battle accordingly. Basically, I just need you to describe your maneuvers and attacks in an "action & attempt" format. In other words, tell me first what you want to do, then tell me what you'd like for that action to accomplish.

For example: "Arc Nova turned his ship directly toward fighter L1, hit his afterburners, and charged straight for it with all guns blazing in an attempt to destroy his foe head-on."

You can only include one set of movements and one attack per post, so don't describe five different attacks on five fighters in one post and wait for me to give you the results. This is gonna be hard enough to keep track of as it is. O.o

As always, IM or PM me with any questions. [/OOC]

*Phantom continues in formation towards nav 3. As soon as Cougar gives the hint of usari activity, Phantom looks up to his radar console. There they were, nine bogies. all of them approaching quickly. He began to get anxious inside. "no push it down! this isnt a train sim!" As soon as Cougar gives the command to break and attack,a slightly calmed Phantom responds.*

"Roger Cougar, this is Phantom returning the call, Lighting up engines and engaging! Switching to dumbfires for initial engagement."

*Jacob breaks out of formation by firing his afterburners and barrel rolling out. He scans through his right VDU and instantly picks and locks a target.*

"Kappa wing this is Phantom, I've ID'd and targeted L1. Im moving in to engage!"

*Phantom fires his after burners for seven seconds while pointing 25 degrees to the left of L1. he will attempt to flank the usari and make him have to realign his cannons so he can meet him head on. When within range, he will launch a dumbfire for cover and fire his laser cannons at L1. the perpose of this is simply to destroy the usari fighter.*

(edited to be more clear)

Once the enemy fighters are spotted Myra actually relaxes a very little bit. She just knew it wasn't going to be so easy...

She firewalls the throttle, bringing her engine to maximum military power, and begins jinking while closing with the Llioku on the portside flank (let's call it L8.) She will also try to lock it up for a heatseeker while using a couple of long-range laser shots to keep it's pilot busy. Once her target is locked, and enters the heatseeker's envelope (which should be a bit longer than usual since the target's heading toward the missile) she will fire the missile at it.

If her opponent sends a missile back at her in return she will slam the Dagger through a hard evasive skew-turn, corkscrewing toward the enemy while launching a pair of decoys. If it doesn't she'll continue to close while her target tries to evade her missile.

(Arc: I hope this isn't too much for one post.

Max. Military Power: Full throttle. As fast as a fighter can go without using afterburners
Jinking: Moving a fighter erratically along it's flight path in order to make it harder for an enemy to target you)

It was there in the dark of that uncertain night,
They watched for the U-Boat and waited for a fight.
Then a whine and a rock, and a great explosion's roar,
They laid the Reuben James on the cold ocean floor.

Neema was just about to ask Cougar what he meant with 'certain portions of your mother's anatomy', as the first dots appear on the radar screen.
It takes a moment for Neema to realize what was happening.
The nervousness immediately takes possession of her again. She steers her fighter towards the attackers with shaky hands and then takes a quick gulp from her water bottle,... she'd have a lot of sweating to do.
As she increases her pressure on the controlstick and chooses her target she calms down again, the routine from many hours of training kicking in.

"Eenee, meenee,... I'll just take this one." She circles through the targets and stops at L5. "I got my target." she says and then concentrates back on the business at hand. Would she not sit on it, her tail would twitch vigorously.

First she approaches head on, but shortly before the enemy reaches weapon range, she starts spiraling (her flight path looks like a corkscrew). She fires a few shots, but not to bring the enemy down, but to prevent him from getting a clear shot at her. Also she will change the direction of her rotation in frequent intervals.
Her plan is to pass by the Usari and then to get in his back.
(She completely forgot about her rockets at the moment.)

(OOC: I hope it I explained it understandable and that it's not too complicated. Just PM me if you need clarification.)
