I assume we're talking "fastest tech available..." Which is probably steam ship, by the sounds of it.

As for city choice, I think Mei would be at home in Iroa. Somehow the other Choan cities don't sound very appetizing, or livable. She certainly wouldn't want to wear anything colorful in all that coal dust.

I presume by the fastest methods available, factoring in general delays, etc. From Rissa to Blueden would be via rail, which is not a straight line.

And I was informed that the Chō (It's like "sheep", singular, plural, and adjective) cities would likely be unlivable in the real world. For our story, they are cleaner than one might expect. Ridiculously so, in fact. To the point that any modern human would be left gaping in amazement. Litanaeans, however, have always seen that level of pollution, so it isn't anything to actually be amazed over. Rather, they would be astounded at how much pollution our industry makes. And, yes, there is a reason. And no, I'm not telling you.

So, while the comments of the Chō cities being unlivable was not wholeheartedly embraced, it was adapted and fit into the world. It also helped to make my "awesome island paradise" a little less awesome, which is good, because I hadn't realized just how Mary Sue poor Chō was getting. I would suggest that Chō would not seem all that unlivable to Mei, had she grown up there. It's like growing up in Pittsburg or L.A. The pollution might be horrid, but if it's all you've ever known, it's fairly natural. Yes, Oize is absolutely miserable, but every place has its bad neighborhoods. :D

Well... Ezai may well be where she ends up, then. And it makes sense, both with our plans and with her perhaps getting a detail in Ezai for a six-month stint -- one that might be longer than that in the end. I was under the impression it would be unlivable, from how you were describing it. I think you might need to liven up the descriptions a little bit :p

By the sounds of it, it wouldn't be any more polluted than, say, inner Boston, as opposed to what I was thinking of. I've seen coal towns. The black dust spreads pretty far, and without some way of cutting down on that -- and in the setting I can think of a few -- it wouldn't be a nice place to live. You could live there, but you wouldn't want to. That's the issue I had.

Thanks for clearing it up a bit. ^.^

The duo goes to meet James and get hired! OR better yet, a private client who contacts them directly! Oh noes! What zany mayhem is in store??! :D

Quiiick question. Probably a stupid one, but hey. :p Would you say that Jornholm is easily accessible to all modes of transportation except perhaps by boat? Our trio of characters would be in a higher-scale city like Jornholm or Deepshore, but they would want access to many modes of transportation in case a job requires them to travel. So I don't want to stick us in a city with little means/access to transportation >.>;;

Mm.. yes. Jornholm also has a lovely direct rail line to Deepshore, with regularly scheduled trains going between them to carry cargo and passengers.

Being a port city that is practically right next door to the capital is apparently good for business.

      #644654 - Thu Jun 18 2009 09:16 PM

((Posting....at last. Yaaaaaaaaaay! ^_^ *Took out the bit about her having only four fingers. She has five fingers instead. xD ))

Name: To’prak Maeko

Age: 23

Species: Female Chipmunk Kith (Afrennen)

Eyes: Olive Green

Hair: Dark brown with red highlights. Straight with side bangs,
hair ends at elbow length.

Height: 5'6"

Build: A medium build, average weight (she isn't fat, but that doesn't mean she has a sixpack. Sooo, slightly slender looking) broad shouldered, with a medium waist. Walks with a rather straight posture.

Skin Tone: A rather golden-tanned looking skin tone. Her facial stripes (are same as in her profile) thin grayish white, two at each side of her face, starting from tip of her nose, to the bottom of each ear. Short black pencil thin stripes appear only just before and after each eye. The stripes on her back are indistinct; five stripes, alternating between light and dark color, light stripes of whitish gray, and dark stripes of reddish brown. Starting from the front bottom of her neck, to the back of her neck, then straight down all the way down to the bottom of her back.

Appearance: To’prak looks mostly human if it wasn’t for her skin tone, stripes, and other chipmunk features. Her hair, is almost always tied back loosely with a ribbon, usually tied right at bottom back of her neck. An oval face, she has rather large chipmunk ears (both intact, and work rather well), her hands seem human like, only the inside of her hand being slightly padded, darker tone, her nails are black, harder then regular humans, the same can be said for her feet. To’prak does though, keep her nails cut short. She only has fur on her ears, and her tail. To'prak's tail is bushy, and edged with buff. The entire tail is grayish brownish mixture and is rather long, over 80% of head & body length.

Affiliations: To’prak hardly has any friends. Usually remaining rather polite around others, she is rather too shy to strike up much conversation with anyone. Maybe some of the others working in the same library as her may count. Though she has yet to really have a ‘group’ of affiliations. Her family, whom she still keeps in contact with and loves deeply, is still living back at home in Afrene. She hasn’t seen them for five years now.

Occupation: A map maker, graduated from the Thevan University. Currently a librarian at the Thevan University in Eddacaro.

Clothing: ‘simple’ is the main word to describe her clothing style. Rather used to just simple looking, earth colored dresses. To’prak doesn’t dress to really stand out much, she usually just tries to blend in with the crowd. She looks like she might just blend in with the old books if one wasn’t paying attention for her. Only on rare occasion will she wear pants, with a simple shirt. Mainly when she’s sure no one’s looking at her.

Accessories: Hardly any accessories other then; a small silver square-shaped locket necklace, and the dark blue ribbon she ties her hair with. Sometimes may be carrying an umbrella, or wearing plain colored gloves

Abilities/Skills: Her combat skills are not much. She was trained in the art of stick fighting when living back at home in Afrene. Still practicing a once or twice a week in private. If needed to she can use almost any stick like object as a weapon (which means it’s not a good idea to try anything when she has her umbrella). The only other exercise she gets is from taking walks around the library, or to cafés. Her greatest ability would be map making. Graduated amongst the top of her class, a highly skilled map maker, she seems to have a knack for being able to describe nearby places never having set foot there. Rarely gets lost, somehow To’prak manages to find her way out of any unknown territory. Her other abilities include the extras she gains from her chipmunkself (similar to things in original profile) Excellent hearing, able to see 90% better then most others in the dark, speed-wise able to move from a standing position to complete run, moving up to 28 feet per second. Her tail is rather strong, main reason it mostly gets used to carry more books when her own two hands are full.

Hobbies: She doesn’t have many hobbies other then reading books, practicing her stick fighting, and taking care of the plants in her small house.

Touch: Manipulation, control over earth and plants. It is a mesh between the two, she can tell the terrain of the land ahead, she may even cause volcanoes to erupt, earthquakes to start, quicksand’s to appear, cause the flowers to bloom, fruits to grow, turn even coal into diamonds if she tried. *Please note: The one thing is, To’prak is not aware that she is god-touched.* As of right now, she is not aware of the possibilities of what she can or can’t do with earth and plants.

Sigil: Markings that look like flowing vines cover her wrists and ankles like bracelets. The same markings go around her bellybutton as well. They look dark enough to be mistaken as tattoos if seen. Though because of her long sleeved dresses, hardly anyone has seen her markings. She has been told by her father, that as per tradition, every third born is to be tattooed with similar markings in her family. It hasn’t occurred to her that they might be anything more then just simple tattoos she’s had since she could remember. *Please note: To’prak herself does not know of this, since she isn't aware that she is one of the godtouched.*

Manifestation: The vine like markings on her wrists and ankles start to twist and grow, spreading out like serpents; ones on her wrists; move over her hands, as well as up her arms, reaching over her shoulders, coming together and intertwining at her neck, and stopping right at her jaw line. The ones on her ankles move over her feet, as well as up over her knees, ending right at her hips. The one in a circle around her belly button is the only one that doesn’t move, but instead glows a rather light neon shade of green.

Her body goes through greater changes as well, changing substance, depending on what she uses her touch for. For example, dealing with volcanoes, her arms and legs will turn into hot lava, dealing with a garden of flowers, she may sudden start growing leafs, or flowers may suddenly start growing out of her, dealing with desert, her whole body can dry up, turn into sand, start to crack and break. What this means is the length of use of her touch is very lethal to her. If To’prak is not careful, she may get turned completely into sand, and be blown away into pieces by a sudden wind. If she still has her wits about her after the use of her powers, she can change back, so it will have to take a great loss of control for her to completely loose it, and not be able to turn back to her normal self.
*Please note: To’prak herself does not know of this, since it is yet to happen to her.*

Weaknesses: To’prak is not immortal, like any other being she can be harmed, or even killed. She is also rather afraid of heights. Being rather shy, her greatest personal weakness would be her lack of strength in herself, or more, lack of belief. She is lacking in confidence in herself when dealing with other people.

Brief History: To’prak was born on Afrene, in the city of Lmiara, the only daughter, third child to a family of five children. Both parents rather well educated, her mother an author, now a stay at home wife-gardening, her father a retired lawyer. Three of her five siblings chose to stay in Afrene, each finding a suitable career and living close to home. The two younger brothers involved in agricultural products and trading, the second oldest chose the life of a lawyer, while her oldest brother chose to go off and enlist in the Afrene army. Growing up amongst the boys, she could usually be herself only amongst them. Though the brothers protested in seeing her go off to another country, her parents were rather encouraging. She was the only one who wished to attempt at living away from the family. Living with her four brothers, she became rather shy as she grew older. Finding it easier to hide behind their strength, and confidence. Secretly To’prak has always wanted to see the world, travel, learn about the different places, be strong like her brothers. So she was sent off to the city of Eddacaro, on Thevia. Yet, despite her dreams, somewhere amongst her hard studying and sudden loneliness she lost more confidence then she was hoping to gain. Graduating from the world-renowned Thevan University, amongst the top of her class, she became a rather skilled map maker.
To’prak doesn’t think much about the ‘Godtouched’, thinking others should just well be left alone and not be bothered. Aside from the few she had seen as a child on Afrene weren’t very friendly, and usually kept to themselves. She might help one out if one asked her for help, but mostly To’prak chooses to keep away from them whenever she can.

Though a while after graduating, To’prak found things felt safer behind the university walls, so that’s where she decided to remain. Renting out a rather small house close by the campus, she started applying for jobs nearby. Now currently a librarian in the Thevan University, she spends her days going through books, exercising once or twice a week, oh- and watering the few plants she has in her small house.

WARNING: This character has got NOTHING to do with the original Avatar :WARNING

Also, I am still working on the character. If things seem weird, that's probably either because I meant to do it that way or because I haven't changed it properly yet XD

Name: Astara Aneirin Virgo (True name Tamara Agatha Kovan)

Gender: Female (trying to pose as a male)

Age: 25

Species: Hare-kith (Thevian)

Eyes: Deep brown

Hair: Long dark brown hair running halfway down the back, usually in a low ponytail

Height: 5'8" (without the ears) 6'10" with the ears

Build: Long and slender, more athletic than muscled. She has not a feminine figure, but it's not like anyone would think of her as being a male if she would walk around in normal clothes. The way she looks now though, she will probably be considered some kind of pretty boy

Skin Tone: caucasian, mediterranian style, though her face is tanned from being outside all of the time, the rest of her body is quite pale because in her standing, she cannot show anyone she is actually female.

Appearance: She does not have a very feminine figure, but it is not like she would be mistaken for a man if she would walk around in the clothing she is supposed to wear. Her kith heritage can only be seen by the two hare-ears extending a bit more than 1 ft above her head, a small fluffy tail and her typical dark-brown eyes with enlarged pupils. Then there is her sigil...

Clothing:
- She usually wears loose-fitting clothing or long jackets (with shoulder pads) to disguise her still remaining feminine shapes and also to cover her sigil. This she does by not using the left sleeve of the coat and using her left arm as little as possible. Trademark is her cowboy-hat like headgear with added holes to poke her ears through. Her clothes are actually quite plain, but she's playing around in the dirt all day anyway so why care about flashy clothing. It does make her seem somewhat impressive though
- Her left arm and part of her left upper body is taped in with bandages, covering almost all of her sigil. This will probably not go unnoticed though.

Accessories:
- Never Broke - She always has a bit of money on her and once a month she is allowed to withdraw a substantial amount from a bank account which seems to belong to no one. With this, she funds her projects
- Secret Stash - She rents a warehouse to store her equipment and her findings. She usually has a rented horse as well
- Tools Aplenty - What is an archaeologist without equipment? She has equipment for about 5 men in storage and usually has stuff like a shovel, a pick and other general equipment with her at all time
- Prepared for the Outdoors - She also has some other general adventuring equipment, like a bedroll, water for a day or two, beef jerky, stuff like that.
- Fancy Weaponry - And what's a decent grave robber.. no, wait, archaeologist without a means of defending herself? For this she has two short taggers hidden in her coat. It's not much, but hey it's better than nothing. The arm bearing the sigil also packs a mighty punch, but the sigil will be seen immediately if any of the bandages come apart.

Occupation: Archaeologist. Even though a woman of her standing is not allowed to partake in such jobs, it has been her lifelong dream to find out the past of the strange lands she calls home. Being a strong woman she eventually got her way, albeit through blackmailing her father and acting like a guy.

Affiliations:
- First of all there is her fund giver of course, her family. Though first reluctant to allow a woman of her standing to get into archaeology, However, after blackmailing her dad, he finally gave in and now allows her to do whatever she wants as long as his name isn't mentioned and as long as she pretends to be a man
- Due to her work, she's actually quite well known in the villages she has settled herself when she was at a dig. She has got a couple of friendly faces and a couple of people who really do not like her in each of those towns.

Abilities/Skills:
- Incredible Pysique - She has excellent physique, something she needs as an archaologist. She won't win any olympic medals with it though
- I know old stuff - She has taken her interest into archaeology, rituals and everyday living of the people of ages past.
- Multiglot maniac - Beside her own language, Thevan, she also speaks Milanese and Cho fluently, knows how to stay alive in Arannen and Süminth and is learning the basics of Sarantican
- I can hear you! - Because of her ears, she has improved hearing so no whispering behind her back because she will hear you!
- Feel the Burn - Thanks to her Sigil, het left arm is almost completely fireproof. Handy

Hobbies: She made a job out of her hobby, finding things other people have long forgotten. She also likes stuff like reading, learning foreign languages

Touch: Unmake - The ability to accelerate entropy for nonliving matter, enabling oxidation / decay / erosion to occur at an alarming rate.

Sigil: The sigil is an arm completely covered in large overlapping pointy black scales. These scales go up onto parts of her upper body, completely blending into the flesh about halfway up her body. This arm is nearly completely fireproof to boot.

Manifestation: The manifestation is roughly divided into three stages (though these are not actualy discrete and will have a transition phase)
1: The arm starts to throb and smoke seeps out from between the scales accompanied by the smell of burning flesh and sulphur.
2: The arm starts to expand, allowing the scales to give way to a display of an inferno inside the arm. At that moment, any clothing still in contact with the arm as well as any other objects of little importance will immediately decay.
3: The inferno is at its fullest, completely revealing the fiery spectacle that is actually her arm. At this point, the heat is intolerable, even for the character, inflicting serious burns

Cost: At the first two stages, the main cost is that it drains energy from her body, with any of her clothing still in touch with her arm instantly vaporized on level 2. At level three the heat will be almost unbearable even for her and she will be severely burned. Strangely enough, these burn marks heal quite rapidly and leave no scar tissue.

Weaknesses:
- Just a girl - First of all she is a woman in a man's world. If her true identity is exposed while in the wrong company, that might spell the end of her career. It's quite hard to hide your gender when the coar that was covering it all just got destroyed by your own powers!
- Can't touch this - Secondly, all of her powers only work when in direct touch with the object she wants to affect. If she cannot reach it, nothing happen
- Nonliving only! - The powers do not work on a living person at all. No effect, period. That, however will not stop the cave-in she created to do just that for her.
- kith anyone? - Furthermore, even though she is used to a rough life, she can still die as easily as any other person. Bullet through the head still means she's dead.

Brief History:
Born as a girl of higher standing, as a daughter of the filthy rich Anton Kovan, a well known steam engine manufacturer, Tamara was destined to become nothing more than another beautiful prize on some rich loser's hand. This was not what she ended up to be however.

From very early age it became clear that Tamara was quite a bright child, learning Milanese as a foreign language before the age of twelve. She also excelled at math and geography. It was also at about this age that she decided she wanted to go her own way. From this age, she would quite often sneak out of the mansion dressed in some of her elder brother's clothes to look around at the cities. Especially the really old buildings were of interest of her. She wondered if there was anything left of the time before the large cities were built. The realisation that she would probably never be able to find out such things finally made her rebel against her parents.

Threatening her dad she would go into the world as an adventurer using her own name as much as she could finally persuaded the family into letting her go her own way. She had to use a different name and act like a man though.

A few years later, Tamara is starting to realize that the birthmark that hadn't faded away by then had made the choice for her father a lot easier as well. This way he precious daughter would still stand a chance if she was really a godtouched. If she would have stayed at home, public pressure would have forced her family to give her up to the Thevian authorities. From that day started the adventure of Astara Aneirin Virgo, first class archaeologist.

Would not the fastest method of travel from city to city become airship, given the ability to largely ignore grades, tides and other surface hazards while taking a straight-line course?

Since the resource scarcity aspect of islands and the uncleanliness of the industrial powerhouse chain of islands have both been largely negated, why not stretch the same for airborne engines? The same engine that powers a steam train could well power a pair or quartet of sizable props on an airship, which would allow for approximately equivalent average speeds over a distance...

The lack of back-breaking overland infrastructure lay-in for airships versus rail would no doubt lead to relegating to rail those cargoes too bulky or dense to travel aboard an airship, while the 'ships carried the lighter, smaller, higher-value payloads and all but the poorest passengers; quite simply, with viable airship designs aided by low resource scarcity and the existence of terrain necessitated transfers from train to ship to train to cross any significant international distance, rail would simply be too costly to be passenger supported.

Not a direct comparison I realize, but take a look at, say, a modern airline versus modern passenger rail. A trip that takes a day (or sometimes days) via rail takes an hour or so via airplane. Even factoring in a huge slowdown in the downgrade from airplane to airship (and of course the equally enormous downward step from diesel-electric rail to steam-driven rail) you'd still come out ahead, I'd think.

Also, question. Does the Milanese Empire maintain a naval auxiliary of armed private vessels, perhaps? Privateers, armed merchantmen, and other armed ships in private hands that are nonetheless registered as legal defenders of Milanese territorial waters and lands (And, with airships, airspace I suppose)?

Afrene isn't a small island--I'm guessing it's about the size of Madagascar or the bigger Indonesian islands. It could have mountain ranges that could be navigational hazards to airships (in terms of height or air currents).

If such presented significant hindrance to airships, they'd provide a similar hindrance to rail lines unless they really want to go all out and start boring big holes in the mountains. I don't believe the Appalachians pose much problem for rigid airships, but the Rockies might; having mountains of heights found in the Rockies on an island the size of Madagascar would be some steep mountains, possibly necessitating a cogged section of track to climb if they didn't want or couldn't bore tunnels through them. Then, too, a purely passenger airship service could be made small enough to utilize passes between mountains, much like the trains would, with minimal interruptions.

Also, such hindrances would be likely then to result in an upsurge of sailing travel around the island, would it not?

Yes, airships would likely be the fastest under most circumstances.

In light of that, edit my previous comments to presume upon the rail, rather than the fastest methods available.

---

And, I shall have to think about your other proposals. They interest me and certainly make logical sense. Just gimme a bit to think about the ramifications and make sure it'll fit into the world. o.o I have a sneaking suspicion that it will fit in quite nicely.

---

*thinks thinks* I believe the answer is yes to the privateers, too. That seems like it'd be a very milanese thing to do. <.< Allow me to cogitate tonight and get back to you on this, as well.

Okay, so we really need a scale here.

A week from one end of Afrene to another is going to give you a frigging enormous island. Something on the order of 3.5k kilometers (2100 ish miles) from end to end. To give you an idea, that's roughly the distance from NYC to LA. That's an island the same size as the United freaking States.

Using that as a scale, there is no land scarcity. These islands are enormous enough for cattle grazing, leather production, all the comforts of bloody home. Cho is no longer a hellhole, but they also have no dependence on outside food due to low arable land totals, and their population is not nearly so cramped.

All that's based on an assumption that with curvy tracks and lots of stops you pull an average speed of 20km/h (12mph) for the whole week it takes to go from Rissa to Blueden, covering something like five times the straight line distance.

Using some more conservative numbers for the time and tech, I'll lay it all out again, using my assumptions and numbers:

Assumptions:

  • 1 week duration for a rail trip from Rissa to Blueden
  • Stops consume 1/5th of total travel time (refuel, water supply, freight, passengers)
  • Speed on level ground is 50mph
  • Total distance covered is 3x the straight line distance from Rissa to Blueden, accounting for curved tracks, detours for stops and terrain, and other deviations.
  • 1 week = 7 days, 1 day = 24 hours
  • Average trip speed is 15mph, accounting for all stopped time, accelerations, and decelerations

By these numbers, the total distance traveled is equal to 168 hours (7 days * 24 hours/day) multiplied by .8 (time spent moving, 4/5ths of total time), then multiplied again by 15mph (average speed over trip duration).

This gives .8*168*15, or 2016 miles traveled in one week.

This number is now divided by three to get the straight line distance from Rissa to Blueden, which is a result of 672 miles straight distance between the two cities. For comparison, this is approximately the straight line distance from Atlanta to Philadelphia in the United States. In other words, most of the length of the Eastern Seaboard. Really. Big. Island.

This distance, through dissection of the image, is roughly three times the distance between Ezai and Reli, in Chō. Using this measurement, the straight line distance is 224 miles between those two cities, which in essence gives that one island approximately the same square mileage as the state of South Carolina (31k square miles. Ish.)

*looks at your calculations* Wooow, that's impressive. o_o I'm horrible at distances (much like our esteemed GM!).

Would it be easier for Xenix to say something like, "Afrene is about the size of texas" and work a scale off of that? Then we'd at least have a rough size to compare to, and once we have one island down the rest would be easy right?

*looks at your calculations* Wooow, that's impressive. o_o I'm horrible at distances (much like our esteemed GM!).

Would it be easier for Xenix to say something like, "Afrene is about the size of texas" and work a scale off of that? Then we'd at least have a rough size to compare to, and once we have one island down the rest would be easy right?

*Grin* Engineer in training.

Xen and I talked a bit last night, and it seems that what may be working is we establish the land area of Chō to be approximately 8.5k square miles (New Jersey-esque in size). Given the approximate land area ratio of Chō to the Afrene main island is ~6.5:1, that would give us around 55.25k square miles for the size of the largest island. 55.25k square miles makes the largest island on the map approximately sized between the states of New York and Iowa for real-world comparisons.

We're working on new travel times, so hang tight.

Name: Most people call him Digger, these days.
Occupation: Gravedigger
Age: 66
Gender: Male
Species/Race: Male Human (Afrennen)
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 160 lbs
Build: Wiry. While once of a very athletic build, time has taken a toll on the one-time gunfighter. While active for a man of his age, his movements tend to be slow and deliberate, and his general posture is becoming more hunched as his joints give him more trouble with each passing year.
Skin Color: His skin is dark brown, weathered and lined, the way only a man who spends most of his time outside can be. Since he would otherwise be largely bald, anyway, Digger shaves his head, and wears no facial hair.
Eye Color: Brown

Clothing: He wears a long duster coat, dark green, over a white shirt and black pants. Invariably, these garments are worn, somewhat frayed, and in need of a wash. His brown leather boots are also worn and dusty, and lack spurs. The battered, black wide-brimmed hat on his head has definitely seen better days.

Accessories: A shovel of passable quality with which he does his work, frequently by the light of the shuttered lantern he carries with him. Digger also owns a pair of six-shooters of excellent quality. While of a fair age, these weapons are well cared for, as is their leather gunbelt. One has the word 'Mercy' inscribed on its barrel, the other, 'Justice.' He does not normally wear the guns.

Abilities/Skills & Power Level: Digger's been around for awhile, travelled extensively, and knows how to take care of himself. Living off the land, languages, and navigation come easy to him. He was also once reckoned the fastest draw and the deadest eye in Afrene, but these are not things he tends to talk about. On the few occasions he has needed to, the former killer has discovered that his reflexes and accuracy have not substantially deteriorated.

Touch: Digger has the ability to absorb the life force of other people, when they are wounded, or while they die. He does not need to have caused the wound. While holding onto excess life energy, Digger seems to become younger, more powerfully built, and more vital. As he absorbs more energy, he becomes stronger, hardier and faster. It is also possible to imbue stored life energy into other things, such as the recently dead.

Cost: He uses the excess life force to power his body's impressive feats; the more he uses, the faster it leaves him. Holding onto such vitality is addictive, and he is driven to seek more. If he stores life energy into a dead person and does not retrieve it by moonrise, the animated dead leaves his control, and he must kill them again.

Sigil: Digger's hands, if he cleaned them up, would seem permanently stained with blood.

Manifestation: The more energy he absorbs and uses, the fresher the blood on his hand seems, until it is actually dripping on the ground.

Weaknesses: While he's active and fit for his age, Digger is still an old man, with all it entails.

Brief History: Lazarus St.Albans was a simple and uneducated boy who loved drinking, fighting and women, just like his absent daddy. A bad temper and running with the wrong crowd led him into a criminal lifestyle, and a natural aptitude with pistols turned him into a gunslinger and bank robber. He became the most famed and wanted person in Afrene for a time, and relished in the attention. Loose women and liquor were the dividends of his wild ways, and his decadence was legendary.

As time passed, this rootless life started to pall for Lazarus, and he attempted to leave it and find some sort of meaning; unfortunately, the world did not want to forget him, and many would-be gunslingers and lawless men sought him out, looking to add to their own fame. Eventually, he rode into the hills in search of peace in the uncivilized lands, and the name Lazarus St.Albans slowly entered the realm of fireside tales and yellowing wanted posters in the postal office. After many years in obscurity, peacefully pretending to be a simple farm labourer, he had a religious experience, and has returned to the world once more, on a mission to save his soul.

Currently, he is posing as a simple gravedigger and caretaker, living under an assumed name in a cemetery in Afrene. He avoids the use of his powers at all cost.

A brief and character revealing answer to the question, "What is your ambition?": Redemption, that's all. A little peace for my soul in my twilight years.

Right, so I have 6 intros down, 8 to go, and ideas for most, if not all of them. When the new forums are ready, I will be posting an additional sign-ups thread (which will also be used for profile storage), an information thread (with updated information based on conversations with my most ardent nay-sayers. You may have already noticed the change from "victorian-esque" to "steampunk-esque" at the behest of many. I may as well just admit it's steampunkish and get on with it. :P ), and then threads for each of the various groupings.

Now, when it comes to groupings and signing up and leaving.. any of this can be done at any time and I can find a way to write you into and out of the story. So, if you need to take a break because of life or whatnot, or if you decide to sign-up later on, that's all well and good and fine. ^_^

This is still a draft-stage profile, but I might as well register it before the signups close. Nearly all aspects are subject to change.

Name: Ariel Skyhawk

Age: 26

Species: Female Bat-kith (Milanese or Thevan)

Occupation: Airship mechanic/Cargo Mistress

Accessories: Mechanic's toolbox, airship patch kit, clipboard with cargo manifest and location map.

Clothing: A surprisingly clean set of overalls while working. Backless dresses while off duty or for formal situations.

Abilities/Skills: Not afraid of heights, able to patch the hull of a moving airship (in a pinch). Has a strong intuition with regards to volume and mass of objects, and can quickly balance the cargo hold of an airship. Excellent hearing (and fuzzy echolocation), and able to glide.

Touch: Forgery and costumes. This includes detection and creation. Detection is a 'passive' skill, with forgeries and costumes seeming 'not quite right' when looked at for 3-5 seconds. Determining what is off about the fake in question takes longer, depending on the skill of the crafter. Altering existing documents/outfits usually takes less effort than creating one from raw materials, but requires at least several hours of work for anything more sophisticated than altering a few entries in a ledger book.

Sigil:

Manifestation:

Weaknesses: Has a minor affinity for games of chance, usually of the low stakes variety. Somewhat flighty at times. Doesn't always pay attention to the 'not quite right' feelings she has, when she wants to believe that something is what it says it is.

Brief History: Home base of Eagle's Gate or Brijana. Worships Rohano and Linilli
