Abyssi | | Age: | | Believed to be around 500 years, but the time between Japan's Edo Period and the modern day was spent trapped in an Argob's Pot in suspended animation. | | Gender: | | Male | | Species: | | It is a shadow-beast species called a "jinbu", see below for info. | | Height: | | Nine feet three inches tall. | | Build: | | Athletic and broad-shouldered with long arms, slender hands and long legs. Similar to a track runner. He has little body fat but weighs around 600 lbs. due to his height. | | Body Coloration: | | Skin and "hair" are jet black. The face is white with black cheeks, and a black circle over each eye similar to a panda. The hands, feet, and tip of the tail are white, with the white coloration melding into the black in a series of zebra stripes. His claws are black. | | Eye Color: | | His eyes, when opened, glow a softly radiant sky blue. The entire 'white' of the eye is a pale blue color with the iris being a slightly deeper more intense ice blue. The pupil is a normal black. Abyssi's eyes constantly emit a pale blue glow when opened--This effect is not normally noticeable save in very dark places. He has no control over it. | | More appearance details: | Abyssi is a particularly tall "jinbu". His body is similar to a man's, with athletic musculature and long arms and hands. Each of his ten fingers and ten toes ends in a talon-like black claw. He has a long prehensile tail with an almost snakelike form and mobility. He has a long dignified face with thin eyebrows and narrow slightly slanted eyes. His expression is usually a nonchalant or Chesire-cat like grin. On his face, there is a white shape that starts as a circle on his forehead, extends down touching the outer edges of his eyes, then cuts inward under his cheekbones and falls straight down to his chin. There are two black circles over his eyes.
His hair is not hair at all but actually several long black ropey tendrils. These are fairly long, reaching past the middle of his back, and act like heavy hair. Abyssi is fastidious in caring for his hair-tendrils and usually wears them tied together in a low ponytail. His ears are long and thin, tapering to a point. He has fangs but they're not visible with his mouth closed.
It should be noted that Abyssi is vain; he considers his appearance to be beautiful. In all, he looks humanoid, but more like a supernatural creature or demon.
| | Clothing: | | Abyssi most often travels around unclothed, but he likes dressing up. He may wear body jewelry, earrings and/or a loin wrap. He is also fond of kimonos. No genitalia shows from outside even when he is naked. | | Occupation / Class: | | Shadow-beast. Abyssi has been, in his long and shady Feudal-era past, an assassin, kidnapper, gang boss, feudal lord, and summoned beast. Once acquiring freedom from the humans who sought to keep him in servitude, he vanished into the shadows where he now heads his own jinbu Yakuza gang, increasing his power and knowledge. Abyssi is typically his own boss, but for a high enough price his talent or his men can be purchased for assassinations or other dark deeds. | | Affiliations: | He was once the battle partner of Dark, and the two were once friends, but differences in their fundamental beliefs emerged and they are now rivals. Abyssi has a young daughter named Tsuki whom he is very protective of. (Her mother, Illumina, was sadly murdered by the Black Emperor's forces, a tragedy which haunts Abyssi to this day.) He also has a baby half-jinbu son, Genya, by Portia Tarquinius. He is a Yakuza boss on both Darkside and Lightside (on the Lightside he is known as Naraku, and impersonates a human boss). Finally, Abyssi is the husband of Jade Transfuga. Abyssi enjoys the company of others, but does not often share his private thoughts.
| | Accessories: | | Always carries ancient Japanese coins used as currency, and his kusari-gama. It is not normally visible on his person (see below for information on this weapon). | | What is a shadow-beast? | Abyssi is a shadow-beast, which are basically monsters which were created out of pieces of nighttime shadows and made alive. There are many different kinds and they all have certain properties in common. Shadow-beasts prefer to be active at night, and much prefer dark places. Since their bodies were made out of shadows, some are incorporeal, existing only as what appears to be a shadow that moves on its own. They all have the ability to move into a normal shadow as if it were a doorway. To them shadows act as passages to what is known as the "Darkside", which is basically a dark, reversed version of the normal world (the "Lightside" which we inhabit). We as humans are not normally able to travel to Darkside, and many shadow-beasts are not strong enough to leave there. The ones that are able to manifest on this side, are sometimes mistaken as ghosts, or "the monster under the bed" or "in the closet".
Shadow-beasts, being creatures of shadow, can normally make themselves incorporeal or unsolid in some form. Some cannot abide bright sunlight, others can tolerate it but none really like it.
Shadow-beasts, with their incorporeal abilities, are very hard to strike or harm with a normal weapon, and most things will pass right through them if they're aware of it. However like cold iron to fairies, they have a weakness towards a certain natural material, which causes them paralysis, great pain, or paroxysms if struck with it, or various combinations of these. (PM me if you need to know what it is for a roleplay purpose.) | | What is a jinbu? | Abyssi's species of shadow-beast are called jinbu. They are mysterious and extremely rare, and strong enough that they can easily pass over to the Lightside, and are not deterred by bright sunlight (though they do not like it). Black skin with a white face is the identifying characteristic of jinbu.
Abyssi's clan of jinbu all have a desire to seek out and find a suitable Master. This relationship could be as varied as a student learning under a sensei, a 'summoned beast' obeying a magic-user, a vassal operating under a warlord, or even a very large 'pet' to an innocent child.
Each jinbu has slightly different fighting styles and abilities, but most rely on stealth attacks and tactics as opposed to outright battle.
 | | Special Effects: | | Abyssi's eyes constantly give off a very dim cyan blue glow. He has no ability to stop this other than closing his eyes. If knocked unconcious they dim. | | Abilities/Skills: | Form of Liquid - Abyssi's body can take the form of a black liquid so that the weapon passes harmlessly through, and then he reforms. Attacking him can be like trying to cut water with a sword, however he can be injured or KOed if caught off guard unexpectedly, since his body is normally flesh and blood.
Strength - Abyssi is not supernaturally strong, but his physical strength is proportionate to his size. He can be viewed as having similar might as a tiger or draft horse. He is more than a match in strength for an average human being.
Shadow-beast Acolytes - Abyssi has a number of lesser shadow-beasts under his sway whom he can summon up if needed. He often calls them through his own shadow or the shadow in the chest of his kimono. They usually take the forms of mythical animals or Japanese youkai.
Jinbu Yakuza - A Yakuza gang composed of rogue jinbu who defected from Dark's tribe. Abyssi typically has one or two of them guarding his person.
Jinx - An additional ability bestowed upon him by Shivz that causes a variety of minor chaotic effects: "You get to mess with people's minds, make them sense something, just out of the corner of their eyes, hear sounds that aren't there, make things go wrong, loosen bolts, crack glasses, small things that can eventually terrify or, if you time things right, the correct screw loosening can be quite deadly and untraceable." Abyssi may only use this for wrongdoing.
Nihongo - Abyssi speaks fluent Japanese in addition to English/Common.
| | Combat-Related Skills: | Proficiency with kusari-gama: Abyssi relies mainly on his kusari-gama for combat. This weapon is formed from a liquified, shapechanged part of his body. Normally he creates it by pulling it out of his chest cavity. It looks like a massive scythe with a weighted chain attached to the handle, made out of shiny black obsidian. The name of Abyssi's kusari-gama is Shingetsu, Japanese for "crescent moon". If Shingetsu is taken away from Abyssi, he can cause it to liquefy and return to him, or form a new one if necessary.
Shingetsu, being made out of liquified shadows under Abyssi's control, has some special properties:
Boomerang - Abyssi can collapse Shingetsu's chain and throw the scythe. It flies out in a wide spinning arc and returns to his hand.
Barbed Chain - Abyssi can morph Shingetsu's chain into barbed razor wire to lash at an enemy.
Four-pronged Claw - Abyssi absorbs Shingetsu back into his body, and fires it out of the palm of his hand in the form of a four-pronged claw with a chain attached. Usually the tines are turned towards the enemy/outwards, but he can cause them to appear turned inwards, which creates a grappling hook.
Abyssi's skill with the kusari-gama is something he developed through years of training and studying kusari-gama-jutsu, with his sensei in Feudal-era Japan. He continues training in martial arts to this day to keep himself fit. He is also proficient with using a normal kusari-gama, kama (sickle), chain, or a manrikigusari (chain with two weights on the ends like handles).
Other combat skills:- Abyssi can make use of his long tail to whip at opponents or wrap around items. His claws are long and sharp, but Abyssi doesn't normally use them for fighting. He is more likely to try a hold or a punch.
- When in liquid form, he is able to move around at will. If he is "splattered" the black droplets of himself are able to reform by collecting together in the same place.
- Abyssi has the ability to 'shadow-walk' through shadows as explained in shadow-beast traits, though he does not make extensive use of it in combant. It is mainly used as a quick escape. When Abyssi is in a shadow, those who can sense ki or some form of energy would be able to detect him. He can be magically "purged" from a shadow but is physically untouchable.
| | Miscellaneous Jinbu/Species Abilities: | - Abyssi has a long tapered tongue which he can use to snatch up things to eat, however he considers this vulgar and seldom uses it.
- His night vision is about as good as what a human can see in daylight.
- He has the ability to become an inky black liquid in self defense.
| | Weaknesses? | | Abyssi's defense of turning to liquid to evade assault can be taken advantage of with a little creativity. In his solid shape his body is prone to the same injuries as a human body. He must breathe, eat and drink like any living creature. Abyssi's vanity is also as much a weakness as his physical attributes. He is also claustrophobic from his stint in the Argob's Pot and can not stand to be in a tight confined space (explained in his history). Abyssi cannot look straight at bright lights. | | Description of Personality: | Abyssi is intelligent, highly charismatic, a capable leader and a good speaker who enjoys mingling with other sentients. Yet at the same time he can be cocky, vain and self-absorbed. He usually appears with a confident smiling or smug expression and tends to make good facial expressions while speaking to emphasize his points.
Abyssi is always well-groomed and enjoys the comforts of a civilized life. He has an indulgent love of fine music, fine food, beautiful jewelry and women that are as charasmatic and attractive as he perceives himself to be. He is also a bit flirtatious and sometimes prone to Don Juan-like romanticism. His marriage to his love, the paladin Jade settles him down a great deal; his behavior towards her is playfully seductive and caring.
Due to his history Abyssi has a general dislike of humans, however he can overcome this and work together if need be.
Abyssi has a darker side to him that is ruthless, calculative and powerhungry--he has the makings of a tyrant. However, his desire for power is in part the misdirected means toward his other hidden wish--to protect those precious people in his life whom he loves.
 | | Brief History: | Abyssi and the shadow-beasts were believed to have been created by Narse, titan of darkness. Their exact purpose is not known, but as Narse is not a malevolent being, they were most likely intended to be a race of guardians of the night, protecting others from unclean things.
In Abyssi's past, he and a series of other jinbu were used as formidable assassins by a Black Emperor, who ruled an empire called Gaul. The Emperor was believed to have been one of the men from Darkside, who had passed over to Lightside and was attempting to conquer it. Gaul had special knowledge of how to control shadow-beasts, as well as the disease that turned normal humans into shadow-beasts, and so the other lands cowered in fear of the monsters of the night. The jinbu in particular, due to their unwavering obedience to their Master the Emperor, fearlessness and murderous stealth tactics, were greatly feared. The emperor controlled their race through means of a geas (a kind of magic spell or pact) that had been forcefully put on their bloodline, in essence binding them in servitude to the Emperor's bloodline for as long as it existed.
A small town called Albion Du, which was styled much like a feudal Japanese village, was in danger of being assimilated into the Greco-Roman styled Gaulian Empire. However, a great hero from this town, whose name was Argob, learned the secret weakness of shadow-beasts. He led a resistance movement of shadow hunters called the Kage No Ryoshi. After many bloody battles, the Emperor's jinbu were defeated at the hands of these hunters.
Abyssi and the other jinbu were sealed by Argob's men in what are called "Argob's Pots". These are black urns with ancient carvings, and have needles stuck into them which hold each jinbu in a state of helpless suspended animation. The pots were all locked away inside a building called Temple Achelon, to hopefully never be disturbed. Eventually, Argob and his men, using their shadow-hunting abilities, fought their way to Gaul and overthrew the Emperor.
A thousand years passed and Albion Du became prosperous, while Old Gaul lies in ruins. The jinbu race are believed to have been a legend. However, this is about to change, as robbers, other shadow-beasts, and all manner of things have disturbed the Argob's Pots, each one containing a jinbu of the Emperor.
Abyssi was freed by a tomb robber who (in the absence of the Emperor) became his new Master by default. However this man was no match for Abyssi's willful personality and in the end Abyssi was more the Master. Abyssi's confinement in his Argob's Pot was particularly painful and debilitating, and from it he developed a dislike of humans as well as a fear of tight confined spaces. He hates the Emperor's curse to desire a Master that is on his people and wishes to be free of it.
Abyssi is also known to some as Naraku or Okagegami-sama. His true name, which he guards fiercely, is Renpou. | | Abyssal Art By: | Nezumi! | Denise! | Quetzal! | Quetzal2! | Neema! | PixelArt! | PixelArt2! | Lunaria! | Aryana! | Patches! | Patches2! | J.L. Maus has also composed a theme music for him. Thanks Maus!
I personally imagine Abyssi's voice to sound something like Jafar from Disney's Aladdin. | | Additional Art: | Abyssi frowning. | Drawn in micron pens. | Looking at the moon. | Wearing Feudal garb. | Stealing the light. | Plotting dark deeds. | Death and rebirth. | A quiet smile. | Freeing Umbra. | With Tamar. | In contemplation. | Early full-body drawing. | With a Japanese fan. | Cradling Jade. | Holding Jade. | Thwarted.
