| Porter as Starchaser Sauk | | Age: | | 50 | | Gender: | | Male | | Species/Race (human, furry type, robot, alien, etc.): | | Sauk (Changeling) - An anthro red fox with wings. | | Height: | | 7'6" tall, Wingspan of 16'5" | | Weight | | 200 pounds | | Build: | | Slender and atheletic, yet very muscular | | Coloration (skin, scales, fur, feathers, hair, etc.): | | Body is anthro red fox. Rust red fur; white chin, throat, chest to groin, and tail tip; black paws to mid forearm and mid hock. Wings are bird-like, glossy black feathered, with a band of white at the trailing edge, and a band of rust red directly above that white band. Hair on head is a glossy black, slightly wavy, and a little past shoulder length. Hair on each side of his face is usually worn in two braids, one on each side, to keep it out of his face, and is left loose in back. The left braid is adorned with one feather, rust-red in color with a silvery shaft. | | Eye Color: | | Dark Brown, with largish black iris. Farly little of the 'white' of the eye is visible. Note: Eyes may glow blue-white when using psionic or magical abilities. | | Clothing / Armor: | | Scant. Usually just a dark brown pouch-type loincloth, and a small dark brown belt pouch. If geared for adventuring or fighting, add a lightweight brown leather draft harness, supporting a pair of arrow quivers and a pair of Japanese swords, positioned on his back between shoulders and wings. Note: In terms of body protection, see Special Abilities, below. | | Occupation / Class: | | Scout and diplomatic negotiator. | | Affiliations (family, friends, organizations): | | Sauk. Part of Priestess Rhiann's tribe and extended family. Bonded mate to Rhiann. Lover/companion to Inali. Bonded mate to Lady Marianne (Rhiann's lifemate). Bonded mate to Ceera Darkwynde, in hew sauk form. (Yes, they finally made peace with each other!) His Sauk 'family' also includes Snarf Sunwing, Snarf Moonwing and Sovan Kawasagi (Rhiann's other mates). Has many other friends in The Dream. | | Accessories (weapons, jewelry, tools, magic items, vehicles, etc.): | Belt Pouch: A dark brown leather pouch with a thin waist belt, sort of like a 'fanny pack'. Designed to be worn on one hip, it's about 8 inches wide, 6 inches tall, and 1 inch thick when closed. This pouch seems ordinary at first glance, but at the seam between the top flap and the back of the pouch there is a 'Multidimensional Pocket' - essentially a technological bag of holding.
The Heart of Light: Appears to be a quartz-like crystal, faceted, and about the size of a tangerine. It is a living crystal, and functions as a psionic amplifier and power source. Greatly magnifies and in some ways refines his Psionic Abilities. All that is necessary is for it to be somewhere near him. He does not need to touch or manipulate it to use this artifact. Usually kept in belt pouch.
Canmephian Proxy Crystal: A black synthetic crystal that contains a DNA sample of Porter's original fur, before he became Sauk, as well as one from some of Starchaser's current fur. Created by RedWolf shortly after Porter became Starchaser, it functions as a 'proxy', for WiFi and other electronic communications, and as a gateway connecting and authorizing Starchaser's telepathy with the high-tech implants that he had as Porter. It's main function is to allow Starchaser to use his implant features that were DNA Encrypted for security to work only for Porter. Usually worn on a green silk cord around his neck.
(GM info: If Starchaser loses this Proxy Crystal, he will be unable to use many of the Bernid implants that refine and magnify his Psionic abilities. See 'Special Abilities' below.)
Rhiann's Feather: A rust-red Sauk primary feather with a silvery shaft, symbol of Starchaser's Bonded Mate status with Rhiann. Usually worn in his hair, tied to a small hair braid on the left side of his face. (Has no special abilities, but it's precious to him, in the same manner that a wedding ring would be for most species).
Mariko's Feather: A Silver Sauk primary feather with a silvery shaft, symbol of Starchaser's Bonded Mate status with Mariko Saito (Lady Marianne's Sauk form). Usually worn in his hair, tied to a small hair braid on the left side of his face. (Has no special abilities, but it's precious to him, in the same manner that a wedding ring would be for most species).
Ceera's Feather: A Golden Sauk primary feather with a crimson shaft, symbol of Starchaser's Bonded Mate status with Ceera darkwynde's Sauk form. Usually worn in his hair, tied to a small hair braid on the left side of his face. (Has no special abilities, but it's precious to him, in the same manner that a wedding ring would be for most species).
Inali's Feather: A beige Sauk secondary feather, symbol of Starchaser's mating with Inali. Usually worn on the same silk cord around his neck that his proxy crystal is on. (Has no special abilities, but it's precious to him, in the same manner that an engagement ring would be for most species).
Shapeshifting Amulet: Created by Ceera Darkwynde and made for Porter, before his Change, this is a small golden amulet that looks like a commemerative coin set in a ring frame. One side of the frame has some sort of inscription on it, while the back is blank. The coin is almost identical on both sides, in both cases depicting a standing human with a Bernese Mountain Dog sitting next to him. The only difference is that on one side, the dog is in the foreground, while on the other the man is in the foreground. Pulling on the amulet's mounting ring releases a hidden catch, allowing the coin to pivot 180 degrees and latch back in place. This triggers a shapeshift in Starchaser after a few seconds delay, powered by his own latent magical talent and stored power level. The shift originally was between Bernid and Human forms, depending on which figure is in the foreground on the 'front' side of the amulet, but now might allow him to shift between Bernid and Sauk. Usually worn on the same silk cord around his neck that his proxy crystal is on.
(GM info: The Shapeshifting Amulet was created by magick, but has virtually NO magic 'powers' of it's own, though it does contain an untainted sample of Porter's Bernid DNA from before he became Sauk and of Ceera's Human DNA. It was initially merely a prop, like Dumbo's 'magic feather', to give Porter/Starchaser the confidence to use a latent magical ability that Starchaser hadn't figured out how to directly trigger yet. Starchaser knows now that he does NOT need the Shapeshifting Amulet to do a shapeshift. Ceera has taught him how to do a limited shapeshift on his own, as described below. He keeps the amulet because it does it does contain an untainted sample of Porter's Bernid DNA from before he became Sauk, and thus serves as a good focus for assuming his pre-Sauk form.)
Roll of woodworking tools:
A green canvas roll containing assorted hand tools for doing detailed fine woodwork. Saws, chisels, hand drills and the like. Also includes a draw plate for shaping arrow shafts, and fletching tools for making new arrows.
Roll of metalworking tools:
A black canvas roll containing a smaller assortment of hand tools for doing basic hot or cold metal work. Hacksaws, hammers, files, hand drills and the like. Primarily the basics for making arrow heads for new arrows, and for making knives and other tools later.
Roll of stoneworking tools:
A grey canvas roll containing a small assortment of hand tools for doing basic stoneworking and scuplting. Hammers, chisels, splitting wedges and the like. Primarily the basics for building with stone, or doing simple decoration of stonework.
First Aid Kit:
A basic first aid kit, with bandages, antibiotics and other simple supplies.
Cooking Gear:
A small assortment of pots, pans, knives and other kitchen implements for cooking while camping.
Draft Harness:
A leather siwash-style harness with sheepskin padding, which can be used like a canine draft harness, or to provide a mounting point for his swords and arrow quivers. Includes a couple sets of leather 'traces' to connect to the load being hauled. Used to haul his wagon.
Cargo Wagon: This looks rather like a horse-drawn cargo wagon, made mostly of wood, with a canvas 'covered wagon' top. It's been modified to be pulled by Porter in his Canine form, or, less effectively, by Starchaser in Sauk form. The interior is about 5 feet wide by ten feet long.
Canvas Tent: A large canvas cabin tent with detachable canvas sides and floor, and a wood pole frame. Essentially an 18 foot by 24 foot Panther Lodges marquee pavillion, it's 14 feet tall at the ridge and 7 feet tall at the sidewalls. It's designed to be usable for long-term use as a home.
Ancient sword: A katana that once belonged to his Grandfather, then to his mother, and is now his. The blade and guard (tsuba) were old in his grandfather's time, and are clearly the work of a master. The black laquered sheath and black wrapped grip are plain, and fairly new. He does not know the history of this blade prior to his grandfather's time, but family legands state that it has never been drawn in a failed cause. Starchaser almost always has this blade with him - usually in the 'Multidimensional Pocket' in his pouch.
(GM info: Starchaser knows of no 'special abilities' for this weapon, other than it being a masterwork quality sword. It does have an inscription inlaid into the blade in Silver, and as such may have some additional effect on creatures that can be harmed by silver. The inscription, in Japanese, translates to 'Draw me for a just cause, and I shall not fail you'. The laminations in the blade also might qualify as 'cold iron', for creatures that can be harmed by that metal. All of these abilities are at the GM's discretion.
Second sword: Also a katana, this is a new, 25th century design, military issue, monofilament blade. The edge is a single, long-chain molecule, stiffened by a mild force field. Can cut through steel as easily as a good normal sword could cut through balsa wood. Can be stopped by a force field or by some types of magical protections and barriers. Sheath & grip match other sword. Starchaser almost always has this blade with him - usually in the 'Multidimensional Pocket' in his pouch.
Survival Knife:
A fixed-blade steel bladed sheath knife with a 6 inch blade. One edge is a knife edge, the point is a thrusting point, and the back edge is serrated for sawing through wood or bone. Has a small survival kit inside a waterproof compartment in the knife handle. (Fish hooks and line, flint and steel, compass on pommel, etc.) This is a very ordinary, modern technology weapon and survival tool.
Longbow and arrows: A seven foot long, 150 pound pull longbow, with two quivers of 48" long arrows to match. (This is about twice as strong a draw weight as most Humans can draw). The quivers can hold 20 arrows each and can either be back slung with a shoulder strap, or attached to his draft harness. He also has two hard cases, with shoulder slings and handle straps, capable of carrying 100 arrows each. He makes his own arrows. Each 'normal' arrow has a 'bodkin point', meaning that they have long metal points almost like a very slender double-edged knife, designed to pierce tough hides or moderate armor. (For example, could penetrate a 16 gauge mild steel breastplate, if it hits squarely and is fired from his heavy longbow. The longbow has a normal range of up to 200 yards. | | Pets: | | None | | Abilities/Skills & Power Level: | Physical Abilities:
Mute: Like all Sauk, Starchaser is mute. He can not speak, and can make only fox-like barks, yips, growls and similar audible sounds.
To speak audibly, he uses 'Godspeech', using TK to create a 'voice' by vibrating air molecules. This sounds like a voice coming from the air above his head. He has gotten fairly good at this, and the voice he produces sounds reasonably like Porter's original voice. He tends to talk aloud in this manner more than almost any of the other Sauk.
Very Strong: General strength level is at least 2 times as strong as a well-muscled Human. On foot and using a leather draft harness and a wheeled wagon, he can pull up to two TONS of cargo weight for short distances, or up to half a ton for long distances.
Has a high endurance level. Also has a very high pain threshold.
Fast self-healing (About 2x normal). (See also Psionic healing abilities).
Psionic Abilities:
Color Code: Untapped Potential | Learning to use | Trained
His general Psionic strength (as Porter) was an 11 on a possible 15 point scale. (Fairly high, and pretty much the max possible without drugs or a psionic amplifier.) His power level as Sauk has not yet been measured, but it's presumed to be higher.
Note: The Heart of Light is an artifact that he has, which is a living crystal that can function as a Psionic Amplifier and a power source for Psionic activities. (See accessories)
Before becoming Sauk, he had focused his studies on what was necessary to control his 'Special' talent for Portals - an ability his species was genetically designed for. This area is fully developed, though his power level as Sauk is yet to be determined. Many of his other psionic abilities were mind-blocked, but those blocks are gone now, and he can be trained to use them now that he is Sauk.
Special - Bernid Portals:
Can create interdimensional 'portals' at will, which appear as a flat, paper thin opening, to effectively teleport himself and/or others to another location, or to view and hear at a distance. It is not a true 'Teleport', however. His portals actually fold two points in space to touch each other, and makes a hole connecting them. These portals naturally appear as slightly ragged edged oval 'holes' in space, connecting two points. His tech implants refine the shape and capabilities of the portals. The Heart of Light extends their range and size limits.
-> Such portals can be made any size, from a small hole to reach through, to a gate large enough to send a small spaceship or large aircraft through.
-> His portals may, or may not, be able to divert magical attacks. It depends on the attack and the whim of the GM. In general, solid matter or 'normal' forms of energy, such as a lightning bolt, tend to go through a portal just fine, but something more mystical, like a sleep spell or an etherial creature, might well bypass a portal as if it wasn't there.
-> Effort is minimal for a door-sized portal to go across a city, and increases with range and size of portal. His known distance limit on portal teleportation without using amplifiers or tech implants is about 260 Kilometers (165 Miles, or roughly to the horizon) Final range with the Heart of Light is yet to be determined.
-> Special Effect - Physical Mirror: By using two 'phased' portals at once, he can reverse the direction of physical objects and energies that strike the portal surface. Might not work against magical energies, and requires the tech implants to do this effect.
-> Special Effect - Bypass: By placing a portal on either side of himself or a group, can cause physical objects and energies to bypass his location. He frequently uses this effect as a combat defense. A 'box' of three pairs of such portals redirects incoming matter and energy from all directions, and also effectively renders the protected area invisible if the effect is 'stealthed'. Might not work against magical energies, and requires the tech implants to do the bypass effect for more than a single pair of portals.
-> Special Effect - Shear Plane: By placing two portals concurrent with each other, so an object or part of an object is partway through the portal pair, and then 'disrupting' the link between them, the matter at the portal boundry is sheared off in a smooth, molecular-level cut. Might not work against magicaly protected materials or materials proitected by a force field, and requires the tech implants to do this effect.
-> Special Effect - Data Portal: Rather than connecting two points for travel, two portals can be used for communication, or a single portal used for a computer data display. Requires the tech implants to do this effect.
-> Special Effect - Stealth: Any portal effect can be 'hidden' so it's presence is only detected when something passes through the portals. Requires the tech implants to do this effect.
-> Ranged Attacks: He can attack through a portal, allowing him to target an arrow, sword or any other weapon with pinpoint accuracy at great range.
-> Scoop Up: The portals can be moved once established, and can 'scoop something up' by passing over a position.
-> Tow or fly: An object extending partially through a moving portal effectively 'flies' along with the portal. He has used this trick to tow objects (by tying a rope to a stationary object and then throwing the rope through the portal and moving the portal), or to stick his paw through and then move it, making the appearance of a detached moving paw.
Special - Energy Manipulation:
Can generate and manipulate powerful energy fields, including electrical energy. (This is actually part of how he creates portals.)
-> Special Effect - Taser Shock: Delivering a shock attack by touch or near-contact, similar to a TASER. Stuns and incapacitates the opponent.
-> Special Effect - Call Lightning: Can be used to channel existing energies from a storm to make lightning strike a certain point, or can use self-generated energies to cast a lightning-bolt as an attack.
-> Special Effect - Drive Field: By duplicating the field effects of a gravitic drive, can levitate and move objects at high speed. Requires the tech implants to do this complex effect.
-> Special Effect - Absorb Energies: If he's prepared for it, he can absorb and re-use the energies from almost any energy-based attack that hits him. This would include electrcity, fire, and possibly even radiation. Actually increases his available power level when he does this. A faintly shimmering field effect appears around him when protected in this manner, unless he also 'stealths' the field. Requires the tech implants to conceal the shimmering effect.
Teleport: This skill had been mind-blocked. A form of it became available to him as Porter as a Magical ability, due to a dip in Paradox Springs. His ability to do the 'Teleport' skill had never been trained much prior to the block, as the portals made it seem redundant. He could, concievably, get to a point where he could teleport himself, and a mass roughly equal to his own, to anywhere on a planet, provided he had advance knowledge of the destination, by having visited there before, or by clairvoyance, direct line of sight, or other means. Right now, this skill is limited to line-of sight jumps. As Starchaser, the Change may make this a Psionic ability again (removing the Spring's curse) rather than magical. He will need training to use this form of teleport well. (His magical ability to do a short range teleport is a seperate ability.)
Clairvoyance: A latent ability that he will need to be trained to use. He is unaware of this ability and this skill was mind-blocked. Potential skill areas:
Sense: Determine rudimentary characteristics of an area, such as 'a room containg four dogs', or 'an open plain, a tree, no men or animals present'. detects the most important or interesting characteristic at the range the user tries to sense at.
Direction: Ability to focus the clairvoyant skills on a specific location, such as ''inside that cave', and to exclude other interferance.
Clairvoyance/Clairaudiance: Takes even more training and effort, but allows him to see and/or hear distant events in detail.
Telekinesis: Ability to lift and manipulate objects with his mind. Uses this to assist his own flight. Can do precise manipulations, like unscrewing a bolt and nut, or pulling a trigger, or manipulating dials and levers. Has yet to determine how much mass he can lift or how much force he can impart, but it's at least enough to move 200 pounds rather rapidly. His weight capability and the strength with which he can affect things will increase as his skill increases.
One nasty use of this ability that he has found recently is that he can severaly accellerate a small object, such as a coin, to hypersonic velocities, and can aim the object's trajectory precisely. This means that he can use such objects effectively as bullets, without requiring a gun. His effective limit right now is about a one pound object, which can reach Mach 1.5 in about 1 second.
Telepathy: He rapidly improving in this area.
Skill areas:
Shield: The basic ability to protect his own thoughts from other telepaths.
Life Detection: Determine how many unshielded minds and the general type of minds (animal, human, elf, etc...) are in an area, such as on the other side of a door. May get a general sense of emotional state.
Telempathy: is sending and sensing emotions.
Read surface thoughts: allows current active thoughts in unshielded minds to be read without detection.
Send thoughts: allows thoughts to be sent to other minds (classic telepathy). A telepath who can shield can normally hear such sendings, but also has the option of shutting them out.
Private Send thoughts: allows thoughts to be sent to one or more specific minds. Can only be heard by the target person(s), and can't be 'eavesdroped' on by other telepaths. A telepath who can shield can normally hear such sendings, but also has the option of shutting them out.
Probe Thoughts: Telepathic interrogation of a person. Depending on relative mental strengths and defenses, can break through shields (if present) and read private thoughts, memories and the like, and can tell if the target is consciously lying. Takes a lot of mental effort to do, and there is a minor possibly that it could injure one or both parties if the target resists strongly. Harmless if the target is willing or does not resist.
Assault: Telepathic attack of a person. Depending on relative mental strengths and defenses, can break through shields (if present) and cause mental and physical damage to the target. Takes a lot of mental effort to do, and there is a possibly that it could injure the attacker as well, if the target resists strongly.
Awareness: Control of body functions, including healing rate. A latent ability that he has received some training to use. :
Suspended animation: Ability to place self in a suspended state for up to a week. While in this state the body requires virtually no food and water, and very little air. Effects of damage or illness are retarded, as if in cold-sleep. Can be awakened as any sleeper would be.
Self-regeneration: Self-healing. Could even be used to re-grow a missing limb or organ. Can be combined with suspended animation to keep self alive while healing. May possibly learn to extend this ability to healing others.
Psionically enhanced strength: Can use mental energies to double physical strength for up to an hour. Possibly higher strength or longer periods with sufficient training and practice.
Psionically enhanced endurance: Can use mental energies to double endurance for up to one hour. Possibly for longer periods with sufficient training and practice.
Magical Abilities:
Short range teleport: Can teleport himself and a mass roughly equal to his own weight instantaneously to another location that he can see, or which he is reasonably sure is clear of obstructions and safe to go to. If used carelessly, he could teleport just his body, leaving clothing and other gear behind. He has occasionally used this trick to get a bunch of dirt off of his body (though he had to go back and get his clothes and gear, which were still dirty).
Shapeshift: (Raw potential) Can change his shape at will, once he learns to use this ability. Can gain the form and special abilities of any creature of similar mass and size. The closer the form is to his current form, the easier it is for him to do. So changing the color of his fur is easy. Changing to another canid form isn't too hard. Changing to a Human takes some effort. Changing to a non-biped or quadruped form, such as a dolphin, would be very hard. He could NOT change to something noticably larger or smaller in mass. If he tried to become a horse, he would be a very small horse, still weighing 200 pounds or so. Doing a shapeshift does not change the fact that his 'true form' at this time is as a Sauk. Only Rhiann's 'magick of the Web' can change him so he will really be a Bernid again.
(GM info: Starchaser knows now that he does NOT need the Shapeshifting Amulet to do a shapeshift (See artifacts, above). Ceera has taught him how to do a limited shapeshift on his own, as described above. He keeps the amulet because it does it does contain an untainted sample of Porter's Bernid DNA from before he became Sauk, and thus serves as a good focus for assuming his pre-Sauk form.
Note: Starchaser has a LARGE potential for magic. His natural power level is equivilent to a very advanced mage. But before his Change, he had barriers in his mind that prevent him from realizing that he can do magick. The barriers are gone now, but he requires training to learn to do other kinds of magick. (This will develop as his story progresses). | | Weaknesses: | - Is desperate to return home to his own dimension and family. Will try almost anything, risk almost anything, to find a way home.
- Very loyal and protective of his friends, to the extent that he is likely to place himself far too much at risk in order to protect others.
- Underestimates Magic. While Porter understands that Magic exists and is real, and in some threads he is learning to use some magical abilities himself, he is still unused to taking magic into account when in an encounter. He therefore has a large tendancy to forget or to discount the possibility that an unknown opponent might have magical abilities against which he has few real defenses. He is much more cautious when he knows an opponent is a mage, but he still had few effective defenses against any magical attack that does not take the form of some sort of energy blast (which he could absorb and redirect if he is prepared). His portals may, or may not, be able to divert magical attacks. It depends on the attack and the whim of the GM.
- Too trusting. He is too willing to believe the best of someone, unless they prove themselves unworthy of that trust. As a result it is somewhat easy to con him into something with a plausable 'hard luck story' that appeals to his values.
- Lack of Mercy. If he decides someone has done something so bad that they 'don't deserve to live', they can expect no mercy from him. He can be an outright S.O.B. against an enemy who has sufficiently offended his values or threatened those whom he holds dear.
- Quick Temper. While normally very friendly and easy going, if he or his friends are attacked, he can get very angry, very fast. Almost to the extent of becoming a 'Berserker'. The more angry he gets, the more likely he is to use lethal force.
- If he loses the Proxy Crystal, certain of his special abilities become less effective or unavailble to him (see above).
- If he loses the Heart of Light, his range and power level for psionic abilities is reduced.
- He is still far too reliant on modern technology to survive comfortably for long in a primitive society such as on the Sauk homeworld. His use of technology may offend other Sauk, especially native Sauk.
- Excessive use of his Psionic abilities makes him hungry. VERY Hungry. To the point where he might go feral and eat anything (or anyone) in sight until that hunger is sated! | | Special Effects (if any): | Eyes and Forepaws may glow blue-white when using higher-level Psionic or magical abilities. If angry and attacking, paws might crackle with electrical energy.
Portal edges glow neon blue if bassage through them is safe, red if hazardous, and are black if the far end is stealthed. | | Description of Personality: | | Almost always a rather happy, friendly fellow. Mood gets very dark if his friends are threatened. | | Brief History: | Starchaser started life as Porter. (See Porter's profile for most of his past history). He has joined the Sauk and accepted The Change, to become one of Rhiann's bonded mates. It has yet to be determined if he will remain a Sauk forever, or eventually resume his original form. It should be noted that Porter still exists within The Dream, and is marginally aware that Starchaser exists in other Dream timelines, while Starchaser exists only in a subset of the Dream's realities.
The Bernid culture that Porter is from is steeped in Japanese tradition, and Porter is a high-ranking Samurai, a hatamoto, where he comes from.
| | A brief and character revealing answer to the question, "What is your ambition?" | | To seek peace and balance in all things. To be of service to others. To help others and to enhance the lives of those around me. To aid my adopted people, the Sauk, in reclaiming and repopulating their homeworld, and bringing peace to their people. |
This image shows how his wings are colored. His Primary and Secondary feathers should be white at the tip, then rust, then glossy black. Other feathers are solid black.
