First, I'm glad Thalamasa did not lock this thread, not that I care much about this thread, but for the idea that some people believe that a thread should be locked if someone objects to an idea expressed therein. All threads are completely optional reading, and if you don't like one, don't read it. It is wrong to imply that if you don't like it, no one should get to read it. This is intellectual cowardice on the Amethyst level. It's the "if I don't like someone's idea, I will struggle by every means possible to prevent those ideas from being expressed."
Thalamasa, you get bonus points for not dropping to that level.
Quote:
Jack Manycoats said: At any rate, people should be responsible for their spelling and grammar, no matter how long they've been on the boards.
Sure, all peopole should be responsible for what they write, spelling and all. And since no one is responsible for anyone else's spelling, no one should care about anyone else's spelling and grammar, just their own. If you know what someone is trying to say/express, then great, respond to that idea. If you don't understand, then ask, via PM or right there within the thread. Some people are dyslexic and find spelling more difficult, yet they still get the ideas into the thread. Should we just ban dyslexics? A while back we had a German PGer who couldn't get either spelling or grammar within the ballpark, yet she was understood. Should we ban English-is-my-2nd-Language-ers? What about people who are rushed? If the idea is that "everyone should make an effort," are we going to assign an effort judge to accompany the moderator?
Worrying about someone else's spelling is childish, elitist, and more importantly, it shows you are less concerned with the ideas expressed in the forum (the forum's purpose) as you are with superficial sideline details. Sure, there are times when misspelling changes the fundamental idea, and those are exceptions and also are very rare. I don't think this topic even warrants further discussion.
